hopefully it is nothing, but check the oil filter /sump for metal crap, apparently the IMS bearing can tick before it dies.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First thanks for looking and I am new to the site so Hello all. My 996 has developed a constant tick on idle. No loss of power, oil, water, no management lights on. I took it to a Porsche specialist who within 30 seconds says needs an engine rebuild for 6k plus VAT Surely there must be other things that can cause this. It disapears once the throttle is lightly touched? I would appreciate if anyone here can shed some light on he matter.

POST 2Original post

Its quite common, probably just a lazy hydraulic tappet, if the noise goes when you rev the engine the general concensus is don't worry about it. do a search on here there are quite a few threads. - Welcome by the way.

POST 3Original post

hopefully it is nothing, but check the oil filter /sump for metal crap, apparently the IMS bearing can tick before it dies. Mine didnt tho...

POST 4Original post

Hi It could easily be a hydraulic tappet. Is there any chance either you or a mechanically minded friend can get a rod on to the engine (and with the other end against the ear) see if you can locate the ticking? Please be careful and use a cut down broom handle or something big enough so that it cannot fit in the ear canal. I do not know where the IMS sits but if it is in an accessible spot you could listen for that first. Berni

POST 5Original post

+1 on the hydraulic tappet. Do you know when the engine oil was last changed and what oil grade was used?

POST 6Original post

When the indie said 6k for a rebuild, did you ask what they thought the problem was to warrant that? Have you though about taking it to another reputable indie for a 2nd opinion, you'll find a few on here have good feedback from forum members.

POST 8Original post
