So my shocks & struts are wearing out, I'm @ 41k miles, but I feel like the previous owners didn't do any maintenance on my car. I just replaced my front LCA with refurbished OEM ones from VertexAuto, I did not do the rear though. I'm planning on doing
Bilstein coilovers
& shocks whenever it's time, should I do it all at once and also should I replace the rear LCA aswell?
I'm not sure how maintenance would have extended the life of your shocks and struts. I don't think Shocks are serviceable and certainly there is nothing you can service on struts is there?
As to the shocks wearing out after only 41K miles that is really short. How old is the car? Perhaps the seals can wear out with age?
As to your question on the shocks/coil-overs; You must replace all four corners at the same time! If you don't you may create a handling nightmare. Good Luck with your mod.
BTW, excuse my ignorance but what is an LCA? When I tried to look it up all I got was Lane Change Assist. lol
The quick way to ruin shocks is too short of a lowering spring.. But I agree with Rick, that's premature and there's nothing to service regardless.
What are you using your car for? Is it just a daily? Occasional track day? We can sell the
B16
kits but for the minimal price increase the
Ohlins R&T kits
are really nice and offer great performance and ride quality. We stock these and custom valve them special applications as well.
It's worth considering your rear LCAs when you're in there doing the coilovers too.
Lower Control arms, and its a 2007 Cayman S so its ~11 years old.
We'll 41K miles still seems short, but 41K miles on an 11 year old is probably about right for new shocks and anything else that might have soft bushings. Again if you change the shocks do all four corners. Good Luck!
More questions than answers. Was there only one suspension choice for a
987.1
, for both base model and S? How long have you owned the car and how many miles have you put on the car? Did you get a CPO? How hard do you drive the car and what do you know about the prior owner's use?
How did you determine the struts were worn out? Did you feel a noticeable degradation in suspension performance? 41k miles is early to replace these parts, unless the car has been driven really hard.
Why did you replace the front LCA's? Again, this is early to replace an LCA unless the car has been driven really hard. Or did you bend something?
I agree with Joshua regarding the gains by considering Ohlins (or KW or JRZ). But it would help to know how you drive the car. If there is an occasional track day or autox or other hard driving, then I would look at the Ohlins.
