Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I am not sure of this but I think that if you need to replace the main seal in the engine it shouldn't be that big of a job.
Leading evidence: 'Replace main seal in the engine it shouldn't be' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace main seal in the engine it shouldn't be' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Having recently acquired a 40k miles '99 996, i noticed after one month of driving that the clutch has started slipping at 2nd and 3rd gears mostly, as of 2k rpm... The engine will just rev up to 4~5k rpm's without noticeable pull of the car, and come down again to regular speed/rpm value after releasing the pedal. I live in Nigeria and would like to know whether it is really the disc i need to change. (no we aint got dealers, the car is more like the NASA spaceship here!)
Sounds like it.
Nothing strange on the feel of the operation of the clutch peddle itself??
I can just imagine under Nigerian conditions that the clutch plate would get quite a workout.
The good news is that the part should be easy to get and a reasonably competent mechanic should be able to change it without too much effort.
Post some photos of your Porsche in Nigeria. I bet that would be a hoot!

Hi S,
Thanks for the reply, Im new to the rennlist web forum.. Heres my webpost of the car on msn (the first two are not really mine, but a pic of interior I got from web and me aside my friend in his CS4 in dubai!). I dont know how to post it but maybe you can help
I also got to notice that under hard driving, the rear of my car is really smoking like the engines on fire but that might be the clutch since its slipping so much now, right? (this is other than the little oil leak from the engine seal on the exhaust, which seems common to 996s)

Hi Wael,
Nice car!!
My suggestion on posting is to basically do what you've already done -- provide the link that you have given me so that others can view it. Yes, it is possible to upload a photo but these photos take up space so that there are limits to what you can do.
If I were to make any suggestion in this regard it would be maybe to put your photos on a site that is dedicated specifically to cars. These tend to allow you to better display the photos (larger, etc.). Maybe try here:

I've never used this one so not sure if it will work for you. There are others.
Ok, on your car, if it is clutch smoke then this should be really obvious. That is a hell of a nasty smell! If it is oil smoke then that should be obvious too. Basically, if you have a problem then I would get it fixed. These cars are just too valuable to not keep in top condition. And what's the point in having a Porsche if you cannot drive it like one? I am not sure of this but I think that if you need to replace the main seal in the engine it shouldn't be that big of a job. Ditto the clutch. It could be that oil is leaking onto the clutch plate and that is what you are seeing. Whatever it is, a good mechanic should be able to figure it out pretty quick.
Good luck!
