Sounds like staff who are still stuck in the thinking around the launch of the car when it wasn't selling well.
There may be another soon . Decisions - Decisions .
Same miles , rarer still and hasn't done any laps of Goodwood . Maybe I should try £60k . ( only kidding )

Advert belongs in the 'more hype and plain silliness' thread with all the nonsense about mature drivers blah blah and is it me or could you fit a London bus into the wheel arch gaps. Looks odd.

Hate to be that guy but 997 GT3 RS 4.0 was Evo car of the year. Never heard of drivers being talked of in wine terms before. I hope it doesn't catch on.
well its got low miles going for it and looks immaculate. Hope it cant sell at that price though.
The one that gets my goat at the moment is the Aberdeen OPC 'red' pdk that's up at £47k with a duff-ish spec, advertised as a 'manual'...for over a month now.

what's a 993 RS then at £350k
The thing is the 981 is not a drivers drive, it's a nice car, but drive an R and you feel like YOU are driving.
I would NOT swap my cars for the 981 non GT cars, nor would many owners hence the prices people pay for a better drive.
To complete the farce in pure ph fashion, all we need now is the owner of said car to post an extended essay here as to how its a 'comparative bargain' to other pork, extol the virtues of it being a lightweight limited run car, values will only ever go one way etc etc, before proceeding to log back in under a number of separate user names and post profusely to basically completely agree with himself. You couldn't make it up!

What farce?
I don't doubt this will sell at £50k at some point personally. Just not now.
Perhaps in 6 months when you can no longer get hold of a F6 981. Then this would start to make more sense.
Whilst I fully accept the R is a great drivers car, for this kind of money most people would buy new. That just leaves the demographic that are buying the car for its legacy and its analogue nature. And most likely want to collect it. Could be a long wait.
Personally I would to find the extra cash and buy a CGTS (assuming I didn’t have one already) and or deep a little deeper into my pockets and get a flipped GT4.
Otherwise you may as well buy a cheaper R example if you intend to run it as a DD or just for weekend/track fun.

hilarious you think you can compare them. 993 rs is way more special than the run out parts bin cayman.
calling the 981 "not a drivers drive" is total rubbish mate, get your head out of your arse.

I was about to press the button on a GTS until I drove the R, pissed off my OPC mind. Had nothing to do with cost either.
If I wanted a daily car to commute a 100mile round trip in comfort then I'd consider the GTS

I ordered a GTS last Autumn, spec was nearly £74k with PTS etc.
Then I had my PEC day and my OPC let me have one for a day. Lovely, lovely car but it just left me feeling a bit non-plussed. Cancelled the order and bought an R, love it!

I'm sure for you that was the right move. Both have there merits in different ways. I guess the question i was posing of this thread is would you buy a £50k R with that millage assuming it was the only one left, over a brand new 981 s or gts? If your in the market for an R and there are sub £45k examples out there as you move towards £40k, in my mind its a very different comparison with buying a new car. As on the R its residuals will at least not drop like a stone in yr1 of ownership. Whilst on the 981, you are looking at finding (compared to £45k buy price of an R) another £10k to get a basic GTS or well optioned S and then another £10k in depreciation. Therefore for me I would look it as a £20k decision.
I think they will drop more than £10k in ownership in a GTS ! they will be 55% of list value in 3 years !
R are still 20k off list for a high spec car, they are just holding well at mid £40's.
But any one looking at the R WILL NOT buy a CGTS it's nothing like the same drive.
Any way off the drive the GT4 ;-)

yeah obviously it will be more than £10k in its life time.... did you miss I wrote 1st year. I don't think it is going to lose more than that in one year. Or certainly AT suggested otherwise currently.

Thats a very hypothetical question if you don't mind me saying, ones thats likely to be an unrealistic situation to find yourself in. Cayman R were made in limited numbers granted, but not that limited...

Well I think the question makes perfect sense
and don't think a £50k decision for a r or latest and greatest is as binary as you make out personally.
As for a CGTS not being a an enthusiast purchase, well I must be bucking the trend then. As I do love my cars and Porsche to that matter. For me it was the best street compromise for a good driving experience based on where I live, near London. And not being fortune enough to have a GT4 slot available at list to upgrade too. But then I would say that wouldn't I.
Good luck driving the GT4 tomorrow I'm very jealous and I'm sure it will be epic!! If you like it, would it be enough for you to change your mind about going back to the old skool

That's why I never tried the R, I couldn't be arsed with the searching for a good one, all the usual BS and lies dragged out from whoever is selling. If the first and only Porker you've ever driven is a CGTS then you can reside happy in ignorant bliss and not lust after a GT3, GT4 that are unobtainable (for me) anyway. Job jobbed.
The car which is the subject of this thread would have tempted me though, what's an extra £5k for a car that hasn't, probably, been mistreated or buggered about with? Im my numbers come up on the D**k head tax this weekend I'll buy it just to prove everyone wrong about the price. (And a GT3 RS for £295k).
Cayman r showing on ph for 38k with 40 k miles. Has pse, buckets, manual, spider wheels. Who cares about the higher mileage has a great engine, enjoy an R and put 12 thousand pounds in your pocket?

I'd assume anyone spending £50k on an R isn't thinking too much about enjoying it as a car but as an investment.....

Never driven a gt3 sadly, or RS as well out of reach of me. Why would you want an R and a GT3 Rs? All the reviews suggest it's a good daily driver. Or would you want to keep the miles off it and use the R as the dd. Assuming I had that sort of disposable income, then I wouldn't care about depreciation and or wear and tear. Would just drive it everyday and love the thing.
Apart from needing 4 seats, can't see the point of driving anything else, especially non Porsche. It Would depress me.

Well in my view now we get into the realms of silliness. I mean I could 'almost' understand if it had delivery miles only but from memory it has about 9k right. I suppose if you were looking back at some of the old air cooled cars in years gone by (leaky engine 964, rusting shells etc etc) and someone said one day these old kettles would be worth silly money you wouldn't believe it, or at least I wouldn't. Well, if the Cayman R goes the same way I would be very surprised, no offence to anyone but to me it isn't that much different from the mass produced S version. I think people should be careful in thinking just because somethings made in limited numbers it makes it special or valuable, you could apply the same argument to the 'Design Edition' cayman which seems to invite nothing but scorn from the R clique on here. Anyway, the more I read about all this investment nonsense and the endless discussion about values on ph the more I think im a very strange type of p owner indeed. My criteria for buying a car is to drive and and enjoy and the importance of value to me is that I would not be totally devastated were I to put it into the barriers at the nurburgring. That's it.
I use my R every day and the miles are going on :-)

put in a £45k offer on that R and it would prob buy it, then it's like having a new one and as values are strong even if it goes down, no other R has 8k miles on it you would still loose twice as much buying a golf R, or a DS3 or some s
tter as a daily.

I agree! But to me the Cayman R reminds me of the E46 M3 CS in the sense it has some very nice bits on it to differentiate from the base model but its performance isn't way beyond. When I was looking at the E46 M3 many dealers attempted to create a halo around the 'CS' model but they failed as it just doesn't have the cachet of the CSL. With the Cayman R it doesn't have the heritage/cachet of the 911, it isn't currently trading above its own list and so I personally see its value as only ever tracking the base model with prospective owners rightly paying a premium for those very nice parts it does have. Mind you, someone somehow seems to have created a halo around the old air cooled 911 cars such that even the base models are trading above their original list price so perhaps it isn't beyond the realms it could happen to the R, maybe there is even hope for my gen 1 CS Halfords special with its 73k miles and chocolate engine!

I think I've struck a reasonable balance. I don't use my R daily as it wouldn't even get warm on the drive to work and driving something that good in traffic just infuriates me that I can't have any fun with it. So I use my old Mondeo for work and for lugging around bikes and short trips round town and to the supermarket. It's very comfy and costs me hardly anything to run. And I don't care if someone scrapes it in Tescos car park. Then if I want to go for a drive for fun I take the R out - bought it with 11.5k miles last November and now at about 16.5k so not doing mega miles, but certainly not just having it to not use either! And after the Mondeo it always makes it feel more special and faster too. I use the R all year and wouldn't dream of sorning it for winter but to be honest for commuting and the boring stuff I prefer to use the big comfy family car. Horses for courses and all that.
E46 M3 CS are expensive now though !! and of course if you did not want SMG then this was the next best thing and manual (smg option).
£20k for a 100,000 miles 10 year old car now ! £26k for one sub 30k miles
normal M3 are £9k !!! for a lower mile 05 !!! £11k seems to be some minters about.
I hope the R keeps a value double that of the standard car like the M3 CS has :-)
Again I ONLY look at cost to buy/sell so end to buying LTD models they always do well in any make again buying the best model in the range always pays you back come resale.
Hence I had the CSL ;-p, the R, etc etc it stood me in good sted to allow me to buy more expensive cars, not losing 50% of a cars value in 3 years !!!

Buts its no different from the p world though is it, anyone can advertise a car for a silly amount but that doesn't mean that's what they are worth or what anyone would pay for one. I certainly looked at many E46 M3 CS at the time they started to go up. Most had been owned by boy racers before the bubble and had been abused to death. Using flowery language in an ad about mature drivers, or suggesting its a future investment blah blah doesn't erase its previous life racing around council estates. I told the dealers - money for old rope!

Mind you, someone somehow seems to have created a halo around the old air cooled 911 cars such that even the base models are trading above their original list price so perhaps it isn't beyond the realms it could happen to the R, maybe there is even hope for my gen 1 CS Halfords special with its 73k miles and chocolate engine!
spot on. buy a std m3 change the steering rack.. tada..
use the money for AP brakes and quality suspension
exactly the same with a boggo cayman S.
great standard cars, just like the e46 m3. but just don't go far enough. If they had made the engine different enough/ suspension different enough and brakes different enough it would be worth it but hey, that's the GT4.
This is also the singular reason why the 987 spyder will be more desirable in the long run and imo, the 981 spyder as well, if not more.

Cayman R & the E46 CSL are in the same space.
Interesting comparison, the CSL has 110kg advantage and 20hp benefit over the base model M3, exactly double that of the advantage the CR has over its base model! But I wont split hairs, I don't have any agenda and am not knocking the CR in any way, I only used the M3 CS as an analogy, I do think the CR is a great car and in my view values around about 40k are reasonable.
The CSL will have the advantage because it is the best the marque delivered. Boxster and Caymans will never compare to a 911, i'm afraid.
Am i the only one appreciating the irony of people talking about how wonderful a Cayman R is because it's such a driver's car, yet this particular vehicle has averaged about 2,000 miles a year?

So many GT3's & such suffer the same fate.

Compare in what way? I've owned several 'standard' 911s, (997 4S, 996 C2/C4) and the Cayman R is in a different league to those as a 'sports car' - my 997 GT2 is in a different league again but I'd always take the CR over any standard 911 to be honest.

Absolutely
not
.
The CSL is IMO much the superior car and far more special to drive.
Better sound & some will say looks more special. But better transmission, engine, handling, brakes? Better road car, track car?
for a start the engine. even though the HP upgrade is 15 or so HP, the ecu management is completely different using a MAP instead of MAF, the airbox, the more brutal gear shift. It sounds fantastic as a result.
The weight loss is also more extreme.
improved steering rack, suspension, carbon roof, bumpers and boot lid.
The CR is an optimised Cayman S with extra 10HP from ecu tuning and alloy doors from 997 parts bin and some weight loss. It works as a package but isn't so far removed from a cayman S compared to the CSL.

Whatever people's opinions on how it drives, the CSL benefits from being the best BMW of its tim, whereas a Cayman R has to compete against the GT3 and GT2. Also, the CSL was not a 'parts bin' car; first to have a carbon fibre roof, bespoke body parts, suspension components, engine and that now legendary intake. It really stands out as completely different to the model it's based on.

I thought the best BMW of that time was the e39, the e46 wasn't a patch.
The E39 and E60 came out during the E46 M3s build. The year the CSL was made (2003) was when the E60 came out.
The E39 M5 is a good car, for one of it's size. It's nothing compared to the CSL to drive and is not as rare, and in comparison very mainstream.

Sold pretty quick though by the looks of it. Quite cheap for a Paragon car too.

It's not advertised anywhere yet, I've been getting trade offers from dealers. I'm not that keen on a private sale but would like a bit more for it than they're offering. A decent offer in the late 30s would buy it, it's a good one, 13 ignitions in RR1, prepared for sale by an OPC 6 months ago.

Need some of the cash out of it to pay for house renovations that are costing more than we thought! Love the car but can't justify it at the moment.

Put an advert on PH..........Guards Red manual car should fly out the door even at £39,999...............
Ever so slightly off topic, i was speaking to my dealer about a change and they said that they would happily buy in my 13k mile Cayman R on prt ex whilst the Spyder they had on the forecourt was being sold on behalf of their customer on a sale or return basis. The salesman said that they won't buy in Spyders as they just can't sell them due to the roof…
Interesting comments from an OPC...
http://locator.porsche.com/ipl-customer/ipl/detail...
leicesters is £46k
but 911V sell loads of Spyders, so better to get a price from them than part ex.

While I'm not a fan of the 987 spyder roof, that sounds like BS to me. It's a bit like how OPCs said "PDK for resale" to me before.
Spyders are a niche, for sure, but there are people who would buy one from an OPC out there. Sounds like staff who are still stuck in the thinking around the launch of the car when it wasn't selling well.
There must be some truth in it. After all OPC's are there to make money so if they won't buy them in then they must have a reason…
Thats how my OPC thinks, others may feel different, I like the look of the spider personally, the new one looks very nice indeed.
So what would be a fair price for a 2012 CR PDK 10k miles, Platinum silver, PSE, sports seats, Spyders, air-con, immaculate and warranty till 3/2017
Ta very much

If a private sale and its a one/two owner car I would start at circa £46k ovno then see what happens!

Sounds a nice car for some one who wants Pdk and sports seats plus it has all important OPC warranty for 6 months!
Depends if you want a quick sale!if he put it up for £40k it would sell quickly but yes£46k is rich but is easy to reduce a price if no takers than to put up the price if the phone doesn't stop ringing at to low a price!

the 2 manual R's with buckets at OPC have already sold 48k and 45k.
Yep a mate of mine has bought one of them and the OPC had another 2 people lined up for the car if he did not want it.
He has been looking for a while and like most of the other Spyder/R owners had a list of must haves on the car i.e. lowish miles, Spyder wheels, Carbon Buckets, Sports Chrono+ etc. Ideally would have preferred a manual box but was very impressed with the PDK so ended up going for that especially as the Peridot was his preferred colour choice.
Looking forward to seeing it and sure there will be a couple of weekends jaunts next year with my Spyder for comparison.
