Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

my engine blew up a few months back, and it was replaced in under a week - brand new engine solutions please!!
Leading evidence: 'Replace engine blew up a few months back, and it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace engine blew up a few months back, and it' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My friend has also a 996 near me and his engine failed last week. A porsche specialist near him has offered to fit him a band new 2008 cayman 3.4 engine, still in the wrapper unopened.
Is this a good option. His car is also a 3.4 C2 996
is it not under warranty?

I had an MG Maestro years back (yes, I know I know....) but it had an engine conversion with a rover 820 engine in it.... would do 70mph in 2nd gear!!
Was bloody rapid, but it was fraught with problems due to being non standard.... I'm not too sure about the cayman engine versus the 911 engine, but I'd be wary me thinks..?? maybe just do some research...
Sounds like utter madness to me - the car would have no value in anyones eyes and be impossible to sell on.
Tell him to call Hartech IMO - (no connections with them).
Spoke to him this mormning.
The car is on a 99 so out of warrentry i am afraid. The only reason the garage said this is bacause, both are 3.4 and also kick out the same sort of HP and power.
He told me he is not worried about resale value as a 99 is a car you dont buy to sell. He is planning to keep this for a ery long time.
He said, both engines are almost the same. The way the carrera has been designed gives it better traction off the line anyway. He told me an article was written that someone put a 3.4 carrera engine in a cayman S and it made the cayman s slower from 0-60.
By doing it the other way round, it would make it better and instead of rebuiding the old engine. The new cayman s engine is bullet proof and a solid engine according to the guy.
He explained the power would not be any lower, if not faster as he has been working on nothing but porsches for over 15 years. He has a RUF trained guy there too and he also suggested this swap.
What do you guys think?
mmmm....... I still think I would shy away.....
the potential for having to continually stick one's hands in one's pockets is huge here....
On reflection, I would agree with Orangecurry - go see a very reputable dealer and see what they can offer....
Just MHO..... :dont know:
How much is the Caymen engine fitted? If reasonable price and it fits straight in the 996 I would go for it. I understand the engines are similar, if anything the Caymen is a more developed version of the 996 engine. Fitting this has to be a better 'mod' than fooling around with "sports" exhausts, intake kits and engine remaps. Plus you must benefit from better reliability? Bet it will make the car much nicer!!
doulas bader: Yeah thanks. But this is for my friends car,not mine. I think your dead right. I personaly think its a great idea.
I did a bit of research and this is what ive come up with.
Keep in mind, this is a 3.4 vs a 997 stats.
Porsche Cayman S
Length x width x height 172.1 x 70.9 x 51.4 in
Power 291 hp @ 6250 rpm

Porsche 911 Carrera (997)

Now, if those are the stats for a cayman S vs a 997, when comparing the cayman S with a standard 3.4 engine on a C2 99, the stats would favour the cayman S engine more.
Also, i don't know if there is a difference but this is a 2006 engine and he has been offered a 2008 engine. Only 2 and a bit year old. Brand new.
I'm sorry but the garage have a Cayman engine they don't want - they are going to tell your friend the best solution for the garage, not the best solution for your friend.
Tell him to call Hartech IMO - (no connections with them).
Are the garage going to put in a Cayman gearbox too? Reduce the weight of the 996? Move the engine forward? Change well just about everything on the car?
I'm sorry but your comparisons above are meaningless.
Your friend needs some independent expert advice.
Absolutely - but if Hartech rebuild the 996 3.4, it will have incorporated all of the upgrades they have learned over the past ten years, and it will a much 'better' engine than any that left the factory up to phase 2 997 IIRC.
Baz at Hartech will give good advice, I'm sure. :thumb:
DCE: "oranges and lemons"? Surely its the same engine with different ECU map- I bet you could get the Caymen engine remapped to mimick the 996 engine power curve. If your mate wants to keep his car and if the new engine is "economical" to fit I would go for it. At the end of the day if he leaves the engine as standard his car will still be quicker than a Tip 996 plus he can ring its nids off with confidence. I would think that a remap would result in at least the same power as a 996 (early 3.4 Caymen engine = 3387cc, 217kw @ 6,250 rpm, 340 Nm @ 4,440 - 6,000 rpm, 3.4 996 engine = 3387cc, 221kw @ 6,800rpm, 350Nm @ 4.600 rpm. Yr 2008 Caymen engine could be an improvement on above figures). I bet you can't feel the 4KW difference and the Caymen produces less slightly peak torque but holds it between 4,400 - 6,000 rpm. A 'fixed' engine from the web site's sponsor will be expensive and has many worn parts...
I am not suggesting calling Hartech because of any connection with the website; he is undoubtably the leading expert on 996 engines.
I'm rather suprised that you assume it will be 'expensive' compared to a new Cayman engine. What are you basing this on?
