I have a 02 996 C4S, its possible to take the light unit out and there is a kind of small bolt that you turn to adjust for Euro driving.

Yes, a lot of driving, but there are two of us to share and the trip has been recommended by friends who did it last year.

Have searched Forum for definitive answer on changing halogen headlights to opposite dip for driving in France, but can't fine one.

I have the factory workshop manual which shows you what to do for changing sides.

On the ring trip this year Dan and Dave (both 996 drivers) tried to convert my 997 using the 996 technique.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It didn't work as on the 997 you do it using the on board computer
Just booked a trip through through France, Germany (Nurburgring), Switzerland (Chur, Davos, St. Moritz, Stelvio and other Alpine passes), Italy (visiting Lambourghini, Ducati, Pagani and Maranello) back to Geneva and home.....in 5 days
It has been years since I last drove on the continent and recall sticking something from Halfords on the headlights of a Rover 620ti.
Appreciate any recommendations for where to get the same for a 996.
Also should we take my 7 year old 996 and yearn for PSM or a mates 6 month old Cayman S chipped by DMS....?
Cheers
Karl
In 5 days!!!! You'll be pushing it.
I just did a 5 day trip down through France dipping into Spain and back in 5 days and was shattered. Even then we hammered the twisty roads and pushed on through the straight bits...
(BTW Halfords sell a complete kit with headlight sticker things and GB sticker)
Sounds fun, am leaving on Wednesday to do a very similar trip in the 993. Going to Le Mans then head down to the Millau bridge, across to Monaco, Italian/Swizz Alps, Modena, Italian Lakes and Stelvio Pass, up through Germany and Stuttgart and the Ring. We're planning on taking 1 week from after Le Mans but have left the return channel crossing open in case we get carried away
Anyway, to answer your question read your manual - there should be a switch in your headlights to flatten the beam so its sorted for Europe. If you are on a planned tour I doubt you will be doing much night driving anyway.
Enjoy!!
996 doesn't have a headlight converter switch like the 993. You need to get the templates and stick them to the headlights. I have a template copied which I can scan if you send me a PM with your email address. You can then print out the A4 sheet and copy the template onto some contact. Stick it on, simple.
Are you sure Jeff? Only that I was searching on this yesterday and sure Wattie and some others talked about it. Perhaps early 996s did but facelift Mk2 didnt?? :?:

Doesnt seem as easy as 993 thats for sure.
Might be different for MkII with Xenon, but non-xenon as per mine don't. I have the factory workshop manual which shows you what to do for changing sides. Having said that my manual is for 1 and 2's and I don't remember it being different. Again, maybe for Xenons. I went right through this in detail for my trip to europe and actually bought factory stickers for it. I have then since copied them to make my own.
Yes, a lot of driving, but there are two of us to share and the trip has been recommended by friends who did it last year. It is an organised trip with about 40 cars going.
Headlight Chageover for France
Have searched Forum for definitive answer on changing halogen headlights to opposite dip for driving in France, but can't fine one.
Section in my handbook for my 2003 Targa covers topic. However, illustration in book shows Litronic light. Does same process equally apply to normal halogen lights?
Grateful for help.

Now can I remember what they tried, err no...... :coat:
But the technique they tried was pulling and pushing buttons at the same time or something like that. It was definitely something like this.
Calling Dan and Dave, services are required
I have a 02 996 C4S, its possible to take the light unit out and there is a kind of small bolt that you turn to adjust for Euro driving. It was in the manual. Wasnt too difficult if you had the right sized tool to turn the bolt. didnt do it for the last two years as we dont end up driving at night.
Headlamp Convertors
Found time to remove xenon headlamp (very easy - fiddly job was removing plastic screws holding trim!). Although plastic plate at rear of headlamp shows O and T there is no hex nut -just a hole. So appears can't switch, handbook is wrong (only applies to Litronics), and will have to buy stick-on masks.
Does anyone have a template of Porsche masks that I could copy please? Cheers
Winco
I'm off on a similar trip too - France, Lakes, Stelvio Pass etc., Switzerland, Belgium and home. Two weeks all in. Would have like to go via the Porsche museum but my missus seemed distinctly unenthusiastic :dont know:
The car had to go into a local shop (RGA Porsche in Vauxhall) for some minor work (including topping up the aircon, quite critical!). The owner offered to switch in some LHD light units temporarily. As I didn't want to do the adapting myself it works out as the same amount of labor anyway. He was pretty confident that the lights in my pre-facelift 996 didn't have the adjustment bolt.
Headlamp Changeover
Further to my post on 10 Aug - I was wrong!!! After asking my OPC they informed me that there are in fact 2 holes at the back of the headlamp unit - one of which has the hex allen key bolt and one of which is a true hole (but both marked 'O' & 'T'). I had missed the one with the bolt as per the book and only seen the empty hole. Daa!!
Thus, it is possible to alter easily your headlamps for driving on the continent: the ajustment flattens the beam. I know it can be done on facelift models which have the 'projector' headlamps (the same as litronics but without the bulbs etc). So oze172 you don't need the adaptors.
It's an easy job which I've just done in 20 mins max.
Hope this helps
