Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone experience any of this or do I have a jacked up mirror. Dealer is willing to replace but there isn't much point in replacing if they are all doing that.
Nope, I'm not the original owner. Dealer suggested that it was normal operation because they tested the mirrors on other cars. I asked them how they tested it and they began explaining how the friction felt similar between all the mirrors.
I really do not understand what is wrong with dealers. They act like thier hands are that finely calibrated. I asked if they were hanging gram weights on the mirrors to see at which point they would begin to move.
I mean really. Customer comes in and says my mirror is moving. It dips from it's own weight after a while and they think it's normal. I give up.
At the same time, the same dealer is replacing the little flip up ashtray thing because the paint is flaking off. I guess it's just a matter of what they can 'duplicate' or see.
Thanks for the feedback folks.
Does your car perhaps have a Mods4Cars RemoteKey installed by the original owner that would dip your passenger mirror for you and return it? If so one of the early pieces of software had a problem where over time the mirror didn't always return to the same spot, they later released a fix for it. You might check around down near yoru fuse block and see if you have one of those devices.
Mine does not move when set
But I learned months after I got my Cayman S, that if you turn the adjustment switch to the passenger side, the mirror automatically tilts down when you engage reverse so you won't hit a curb or such and then returns to normal after I start going forward.
This is what I mean by really studying the owner's manual. It is a feature described therein. I didn't know about ti for months. Duh? Ed
Hmmm, which mirror are we talking about? I think the OP is talking about the inside rear view mirror not the right hand outside mirror which of course with certain options does point down when reversing. Guess it could be the vanity mirrors....kidding.
I have noticed that my rear view mirror moves also but I think it is because of the vibrations of driving and hitting bumps and such. It does not have a tight system and moves quite easily.
Mine has not moved a mm since 2/06. I live on a long gravel road that I guarantee is rougher than anything most Cayman owners drive on. It is defective and probably has been abused. Get it replaced.
How exactly do you abuse a rear view mirror? I mean I've got a pretty wild imagination but even I can't think of ways to abuse it.
They have it on order so I'll report back when it gets changed out.
Are you sure that it is the mirror that is moving? It might be your spine that is changing length.
Don't laugh, I am serious. In the morning just after you get up your spine is longer than it will be at the end of the day. Sit in your car just after rising and the mirror will be adjusted such that you are looking at the bottom edge of the back window, so you adjust it. When you leave work at the end of the day just the opposite will be the case. Not everyone, I'm sure, but it happens to me like clockwork and I have read that this is quite common.
+1
I also notice that the firmness of the seats in the morning are usually stiffer due to the cooler conditions. After the interior heats up during the day, like the saying goes... I can "melt" into my seats.
This will be interesting. Guess you have to measure your height in the a.m. and p.m also...
Is it possible the previous owner mounted a radar detector on the mirror and frequently took it on and off? I have seen frequent use like that in a not so careful way mess up other makes mirrors over time.
I had this exact problem shortly after purchasing my '07 CS last year (CPO'd). Dealer couldn't replicate, of course, but replaced it anyway under warranty. It doesn't migrate anymore. Haven't had to adjust it since (6 mths. or so).
Take it to the dealer and let them know this is something that cannot be replicated for them unless they take your car for a month while you drive their GT.
The funny thing was that the work order for replacement mentioned my bluetooth microphone mounted to the headliner a few inches away. Obviously not even close to being connected to any part of the mirror, but mentioned anyway. I guess they're just trying to hedge their bets in case they need an excuse to refuse repair and blame it on owner customization.
Just to keep everyone updated. They managed to break my windshield installing the new mirror. 2nd windshield didn't look right .. we're on windshield 3. Dealer has been cooperative but it's still a tad frustrating.
Mine doesn't move on its own.
But I have noticed that after sitting in the sun for several hours it can be moved with the slightest touch with your pinky.
Any other time it takes a good amount of effort.
Whatever generates the "friction" in the mirror really, really loosens up in heat; I would imagine if I left it in the sun in Arizona it would move by itself all the time.
I agree. I think it's a heat/sun issue and I sometimes do leave it out for a few days and have no covered parking at work. We'll see how the new mirror behaves over time. On a positive note, my original windshield did have a crack in it right under my line of vision which thankfully will be gone once I get the new windshield installed properly.
