Hi all,
I am considering selling my 996 Carrera and one of the replacement options is a 987.2 Cayman or Boxster. I keep a vague eye on cars for sale and can’t help but notice that despite limited availability, they seem to hang about.
Any ideas why this may be, or experience that goes against what I am seeing? I don’t want to buy a car to late money, but equally don’t want to buy a car that I can’t move on!

ultimately it'll come down to price. If its priced fair then it'll sell. The tidy ones we post up on

One highlighted this week sold within days. the good ones go quick, there is a lot of nondescript ones around at perhaps questionable prices - i don't think its anymore scientific a reason than that.
This one sold yesterday on CC . I bid on it but with the 6% buyers premium it was just a little too high for a casual purchase.

Thanks for the replies so far.
I know it ultimately comes down to price but there are seems to be a lot of cars at the £25k mark and they all have sat for a while. I need to look harder I guess to move quickly on the right cars.
Any thoughts on the below that has been for sale since August as an example? It is interesting to know what buyers of certain models look at even if these cars are not exactly what I would go for.

Or this one:

Sorry about the links, it is fiddly on my phone.
Spec. Spec. spec.
Porsche having so many options do get expensive new so the temptation is always there to skimp on options which come resale time will bite.
No PCM/Chrono/PSE/PASM cars will always take a while. A pdk with no chrono on a 987 would be a tough sell but a fully optioned car is always going to be easy to sell and for a premium price.
I've had the same looking for a gt3 there are loads around but all of them have got something wrong with the Spec. The most bizarre one is having the folding buckets in 991 cars instead of 918 seats. Totally bizarre Spec.
I have noticed a few lately that have hung around. It seems like a lot of them are towards the £27-29k mark for a 987.2 Cayman S.
I am considering putting my one up for sale soon but not quite sure where to price it yet, if you’re interested please PM and let me know. Black, Manual, PSE, full Porsche history, Bose, Sports plus seats and lots of other nice bits 56k miles.

Yeah, that's the same car. At the original advertised price of £27k I think it was a good buy. It's where I'd have put my money in this crazy market as the equivalent 997.2 would have cost you £45k.
I'm guessing the dealer paid £26k. Red sells.
Thanks all, good to hear. I was just worried that no one wanted to buy them and I would be stuck with a car in a year or twos time!
I know that the Porsche market is one of the most spec sensitive, I will be conscious regarding options on potential purchases.
I really think what you're seeing is cars that were priced too high coming into winter when the market definitely cooled and sellers not being realistic.
I think a well spec'd manual 987.2 will most importantly be a great car to own and drive...secondly it will be sought after as they made only a fraction of them compared to 987.1 manuals. I doubt you'd be left holding one if you need to shift it, just price it realistically.

Gen 2 they fixed the chocolate engine. Everybody knows this so people ask the earth for them price wise. Hydraulic steering great engine. Apart from the 987.2 R or spider which demand silly money.
So my guess is people ask to much so they hand around.

Hi, I have just paid near £28k for one from Dovehouse which is manual with good mileage, history and all the toys I wished for. I have not owned a Porsche since I was 25 some 25 years ago! I absolutely love it and really don’t care too much if it loses a few grand in 2/3 years time, life is short.

Nice! congratulations. Dovehouse always seem to have really nice 987's for sale, and present them very well online.

I saw that Red one as it was close to me.
The write up indicated a petrol head and it had a few things sorted recently like the air con condensers.

was it the silver one with full leather?

That's a really solid buy at that price from a dealer with full leather, sports seats, PSE, BiXenon. Good to see not all dealers are deluded!
+1
Fabulous car for a really good price! Except for full leather and Bose, mine looks exactly like that. I think about switching to a 911 all the time, but whenever I open the garage I change my mind. I would miss it too much.
Thanks, I’ve been looking for a while and most that come to the market have very basic options but still command a high price. The car will get used at every opportunity and driven with a big smile.

I think also that if you're trying to find your way into Porsche ownership, and less aware of the mechanical advantages of a 987.2, then they can look very strong money vs 987.1's with similar mileage.
I bought a well-optioned manual 09 987.2 BS for under £20k in November. Aqua blue, 19 Carreras, Chrono/PASM, audio and steering wheel upgrade, cruise and warranty (66k miles). I practically snapped their hand off at that price. I think prices have softened very slightly since, but not by much.

Fantastic cars and the ultimate entry point into Porsche ownership imo.
Yes, I recommend a 2.7 987.1 or any 987.2 as an entry point into Porsche life. Not that hard to maintain either if you know where to source parts cost effectively.
I've got a 2.9 PDK well spec'd (PSE, Chrono, Sports Plus etc) and it is one of the last (2012). I've had quite a lot of interest but it hasn't sold yet but I do think people are perhaps waiting for the weather to improve slightly and possibly for the economy and cost of living issues to calm down.
Longer term these are going to be good news as they are a great way into Porsche ownership.

This one is now for sale again at...
https://mrsportscars.com/listing/porsche-cayman-s-...
...its got an amazing stance.
This is a very nice one too that isn't on AT or PH (i think)
https://www.ktgreen.co.uk/used-porsche-cayman-leed...
....really top notch Gen 2's both of these.
Not quite the same but I was recently in the market for a 986 Boxster and my initial thoughts were there's loads for sale but when I started looking properly I quickly found that the ones which had been for sale a while had issues such as lack of service history, damage, door panels hanging off in one case (after being told it was mint)!
The good ones sold fast so blink and you would miss them, I suspect the same may be the case with the 987 and above.

As per my first reply a few weeks back, have you been following this thread

....as this is where we generally log all the latest best ones we see, and where both cars were posted prior to over here. The Red one was posted prior to it now being with a reseller, at £3K less than it is now, in the space of a week, so that forum is a good place to bookmark.
The Atlas Black one has gone (that spec was out of this world) but the red one looks available still, albeit £3K more than it was.

Yes, good spec manual 987.2 don't hang about.
Still alot of activity in the sub £30k Porsche market if priced right
At time of writing this .1 is very tempting if you're open to modded cars:
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2008-porsche-9...
If you can afford the .2 / are scared of .1s then it might not be an option but that is a pretty decent saving!
A .1 but deserves highlighting I think….a really nice Cayman with some decent work & modifications done.

Indee, I have had an eye on it, will look to register for the forum soon.
That .1 example looks lovely, they do look better as they seem to sit lower (is this right?) and that is ignoring this one being modified.
Thought I'd share this one that got listed this weekend. Quite rare to see an Amethyst Metallic 987 (pics don't do the colour justice, no sunlight hitting it). lower it a bit and its rather nice I'd say.

I can see the seals have been done, but it’s still the weaker engine with the less efficient oil distribution though isn’t it?
Obviously, that is only really a problem, if you intend to track the car as well.

That is correct. It was listed £3k less with a private seller a few weeks ago
