Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Whilst under the arse end of my car having the bolts between the exhaust and the turbo's replaced due to corrosion, i notices that one of the small adjustable shafts that connects the turbo to what looks like a vacuum has snapped. Does this mean that the waste gate is permanently open? Is there a strong chance that this will have seized? Am I Stupid? HELP If it is a critical component I will get it sorted asap. I am pretty new to the Porsche Boxer engine, so I hope this makes sense. Thanks guys!

POST 2Original post

Yes, they are the waste gate actuators, but I'm not sure if the default position is open or closed. I would have thought that fail safe would be open though. What boost are you reading at WOT? If it is about 0.4 bar max, then it is likely to be open.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Richard - moocho appreciated. If it is open by default, can it cause any damage, or am i just losing a few BHP?? Cheers, Graham.

POST 4Original post

Hi..Same on mine actuator rod snapped, so only running on 1 turbo.... i have been told you can get away with just the actuator being replaced, but sometimes it requires a new / recon turbo. let us know what you find and did?????

POST 5Original post

If the default position is open, you will just lose power as that turbo will simply be spilling pressure through the wastegate. If the default position is closed, get it fixed ASAP! It will be a lot cheaper than an exploded engine!

POST 6Original post

Just so I understand: - Wastegate closed : means your pressure keeps increasing but does no release ? - wastegate open: means your pressure only goes up to about 0.4 bar ? Does anyone know what the pressure should be at different places on the rev range or is it not directly attributeable ?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I still have .5 bar, which means that the wastegate is open, and I'm down one turbo... Getting it sorted next week in Devizes by Steve Bull. replacement Wastegate actuator. The Turbo and Wastegate seem to be fine. Looks like a few hundred quid will sort me out. He seems like a really knowledgeable guy. Watch this space... I think he'll do me proud  Graham.

POST 8Original post

Good luck buying a replacment actuator, I think you can only buy them from Porsche. I tried so many KKK dealers (turbo manufacturer) and nobody would sell me one. Richard H may be able to give you an idea of the OEM price. Check that the wastgate arm still moves freely and that its not stuck. Let me know if you have any probs as I have a spare set of 17k miles turbos assuming your car is running the K16's and not K24's Is it the N/S turbo by any chance? :thumb:

POST 9Original post

Spot on John! N/S it is! http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?p=567075#567075

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

HI, Yes, its the N/S actuator that has broken. is that the usual one that tends to go? Graham.

POST 11Original post

Yes it seems to be, it may be because the N/S actuator arm is almost at the bottom of the turbo open to the elements and the O/S actuator is on the side. No doubt your turbo heat shields are shot too unless they have already been replaced.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Turbo heat shields shot...Moi??? They are not shot...they are RUINED!

POST 13Original post

It was N/S on mine also as far as I remember. Had it replaced a few months ago.

POST 14Original post

Hi guys, I am sure you are not ignoring me :?: but does anyone know the boost pressure you would expect to see at different levels in the rev range as you accelerate ?

POST 15Original post

Hi Spy, Its not really to do with the rev range its more to do with the amount of throttle you are giving the engine and the selected gear, for example if you were at say 4k rpm and you gave it full throttle in 5th or 6th, the turbo should spool up to full boost almost straight away which I think on a standard 996 turbo is about 0.7/0.8 bar. If you did the same with half throttle you would only reach 0.3/0.4 bar. You obviously need to be in the range when the turbo comes on boost. Do you have a boost problem?
