Suggestion

Just to clarify, the 500 squid control box simply converts the interior manual dial control voltage to interact with the xenon dynamic motor control unit inside the lamp (which uses a different signal protocol and connector to halogen units)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know if a set of original porsche pre facelift xennon (litronic) headlamp units can be a direct replacement for the standard halogen ones. ie will they just slide in to the runners and connect as usual? And work? I suspect not and I'm not sure how the self leveling works. Any help apreceiated.

POST 2Original post

hi, Porsche Litronic retrofit for 986/996 cars is a straight swap. details here: http://pages.prodigy.net/jfelker/litronics/lintonicinst.htm cheers

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for that Brumbrum. Still looks a bit complex for me . Maybe get my indie to do it. Useful info thanks

POST 4Original post

It's quite wasy, the porsche instructions just carry alot of detail for the tech's.. it should only take you about an hour to complete :thumb: give it a try! brumbrum

POST 5Original post

If you're not bothered about having a twirly wheel that moves them up and down from the comfort of the driving seat (ie you don't deliver antique wardrobes or couple of cwt of paving slabs in front or rear boots) - just slip them in. Has any one ever actually used their adjustment dial for its intended purpose? - it doesn't count if you have a permanent bias - this should be corrected on the lamp unit itself. Frankly, 500 squid and an hour of slicing your hands for the control gubbins seems poor value when the litronics can be had for 600ish the pair or £350 price to change if you eBay your old units. Instructions to fit: 1.) open bonnet 2.) loosen carpet retaining screw 3.) pull back carpet 4.) insert lamp removal key 5.) turn lamp key 90 degrees to unlock 6.) slide old lamp out 7.) slide new lamp in 8.) turn lamp key -90 degrees to lock 9.) remove lamp key 10.) put carpet back 11.) repeat for other side 12.) close bonnet 13.) go for a night drive 14.) adjust lamps if necessary (not required if new) Time required = 5 mins Slight variation to above with washers: requires washer jet corners to be swapped or if already fitted, swap washer hoses.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No not bothered about self leveling at all and don't have washers currently, so that was exactly what I was wondering / hoping. I've had the lights out many times for cleaning and brighter bulb replacement (still rubbish) Many thanks.

POST 7Original post

Just to clarify, the 500 squid control box simply converts the interior manual dial control voltage to interact with the xenon dynamic motor control unit inside the lamp (which uses a different signal protocol and connector to halogen units) The kit does not include suspension sensors etc, hence not self-levelling. Note also that, if fitted, the control box would also automatically rotate the xenon assembly upwards by 1.5 degrees on full beam to better overlap the dipped beam xenon and full beam halogen beam patterns. This is not really noticeable as the halogen full beam (particularly with enhanced halogen bulbs) has a longer, wider, higher throw than the projector lensed xenons anyway. EDIT: beam rotation typo 15 degrees (!) corrected to 1.5 degrees.

POST 8Original post

Not sure I consider 1:50 mins of labour and multiple wiring additions or splices as a "straight swap". Not sure that link helps with the actual option of a "straight swap" without the control box.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
