get an optima redtop, not the cheapest battery, but it will out last every other battery out there, i run two in my diesel truck and three on my boat, as soon as i get my 966 fixed and once its time for a new battery I'll put a redtop in it too.

Went back to mb dealer and asked what kind of test they use and they said it's special tater from mb that can test cranking power, voltage, etc.

Battery testing done at AutoZone using volt meter is the easiest, but the bosch tester is able to test specific gravity of the electrolyte and a better indication of the health of the battery as it can reveal possible short across cell such as sulfation.

Got MB ML 350 with a 2 yr old merc battery. Took it MB dealer for routine service and was informed that battery failed their test. Since it was working fine, decided to wait and get an autozone battery which has a longer warranty and 80$ cheaper. Had autozone test it and they said it wad fine, fully charged! Went back to mb dealer and asked what kind of test they use and they said it's special tater from mb that can test cranking power, voltage, etc. Autzone guys said that either the battery is rated for being charged or not and thought mb was not too truthful. What do think?

Only other test I am aware of would be a load test. Autozone should have performed that too. Maybe the got your car confused with someone elses.

But before that note: Mercedes uses the BAT 171 battery tester made by Bosch GmbH Battery testing done at AutoZone using volt meter is the easiest, but the bosch tester is able to test specific gravity of the electrolyte and a better indication of the health of the battery as it can reveal possible short across cell such as sulfation. Low SG reading indicate a tired battery which may not hold charge. Your battery must have had some sort of internal problem that reduced its voltage without substantially reducing its ability to put out lots of amps. This must fooled the battery tester in AutoZone. So change battery. John
