I've seen some posts where people pull it all apart and replace the foam but I never did, figured I'd break something in the process of pulling it all apart and wouldn't want to attempt it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

It's terrible. I cannot believe the inner foam lining of my 2007 987.1 CS brittled-out and spew itself in bits all over me and the interior, not to mention getting trapped in the air vents. It's appalling the kind of quality that went on in Finland or wherever the car was made. It certainly didn't cater to Malaysian weather. I have not ever seen this happening in my other vehicles such as BMW and Toyota. Horrendously horrible and the darling has to be in the dealer workshop for a week dismantling the whole dashboard and getting to the air vent lining.

POST 2Original post

My 04 986 Boxster is doing the same thing. And the crap is sticky and leaves smudges trying to clean it off. Yuck. Car spent it's life in Fla, Texas, so except for the brief winters similar to Malaysia climate. Have not checked into cost to replace the ducting sounds like a lot of labor.

POST 3Original post

Do you mean the foam strips used to seal the dashboard vents to the ductwork behind the dash? From what I've seen, the plastic ductwork itself does not have any lining. Mine is an 07 (built in 06) and has also spent it's life in Florida and Texas. So far the foam is intact… I just had some of the ductwork apart looking for a rattle. Or perhaps you mean the vents at the base of the windshield… so is there foam inside those?

POST 4Original post

I think I am getting the exact same thing - black almost "mushy" foam that disintegrates when you touch it. Car has lived in TX all its life. I had been wondering what this stuff coming up to my vents was; sometimes large pieces get stuck right behind the vents Any idea if it is a serious problem or just a nuisance?

POST 5Original post

Curious. Have you guys had your car repaired (from a crash) before? This seems to a problem on my friends' cars that have gone through repairs or major paintwork that required removal of air ducts etc. Never heard this happening on cars that haven't gone through repairs

POST 6Original post

Nope. No crash on mine. I'm the first owner but yes did paintwork over its original color. Dealer maintains that it's due to excessive heat and coupled with high humidity and the foam (God knows where it's from) like sticky gunk gets trapped behind the air vents.

POST 7Original post

Ok u could be right here in respect of where the foam is from.

POST 8Original post

My Indy mechanic has my car right now and just told me that it is in fact the foam around the ductwork that is coming out and that it's a non issue so no need for concern. He said it's normal - a quirk ha

POST 9Original post

hey Malaysian.... this sounds similar to the crap foam they used on the headliner. did you send it back to SDAP?

POST 10Original post

I have a 98 boxster and exact same thing happened to me. Sticky and stains carpeting. Just got it back from Porsche dealership. Yes dashboard had to be removed. Car has been in GA and FL. Always garaged. No accidents

POST 11Original post

I had the black foam chunks and some beige thin strips of foam shooting out the center and dash vents last month. I ran the AC fan at full speed alternating between the vents and after a couple of drives it stopped. I have had some occasional small stuff since but most of it has blown out. The AC still blows cold too.

POST 13Original post

I have that on my 2007 Cayman , had it on a 2003 GLI and have it on a 2009 Jetta Turbo. Saw a post from a guy with an Audi that has the same thing. It is the foam from the ductwork. Easiest thing I found to do is crank the ac and force it through the dash vents by moving them up and down, pulling out whatever you can with tweezers and eventually there is no more foam to come out anymore. I've seen some posts where people pull it all apart and replace the foam but I never did, figured I'd break something in the process of pulling it all apart and wouldn't want to attempt it.
