I would suggest O2 sensor first (you can diagnose by swapping sensors and see if code changes) as they are least expensive
Leading evidence: 'Replace ) as they are least expensive' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace ) as they are least expensive' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Should it be intact then that is an option yet if it is coming apart I would replace the Cat as it can travel to the rear of the exhaust and plug it and also get ingested causing misfires.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all -
Recently threw a CEL related to code P0431 (warm up catalyst efficiency below threshold - bank 2). My understanding is that there's a federal 8yr/80k warranty, but since I'm an '06 (even with very low miles, 41k) I'm past the mark. I have
2006 Cayman S
.
Any suggestions? Being told could be nearly $2k for a fix, waiting to get the official number.
Thanks!

First, do a search here as there is a lot of reading on the subject.
It may be caused by one or more faulty O2 sensors, those are relatively cheap and easy to replace.
It may be that you have your original catalytic converters and original ECU programming in which case for a 2006 car I'm surprised you haven't tripped this previously.
If not the O2 sensor then you could either get new exhaust manifolds with pre-cats (probably where that $2k figure is coming from)
OR
You can get new ECU tuning that will ignore the signals from the O2 sensor that have to do with pre-cat warm up.
I would suggest O2 sensor first (you can diagnose by swapping sensors and see if code changes) as they are least expensive
Second I would look at other ECU tuning because there are other benefits to be gained from it like more power and removal of the torque dip in the mid range, and thus better driveability.
Again, lots of reading on the subject here, but I would not throw away $2K+ on new exhaust manifolds and catalytic convertors unless your converter is really disintegrating which isn't likely.
Thanks for the quick response! I did a search (I'll dig more), but seemed like most people were covered under the 8yr mark..
I will get more information and respond back... perhaps time for an RS350!
Thank you!
Even though you are technically beyond the 8 year mark you could always ask your dealer to fix it for free under a customer goodwill program. Each dealer has so much $$ they can use for customer goodwill, so if you are a good customer of theirs they may do that for you. Doesn't hurt to ask.
The dealer couldn't get to the car Friday (other than scanning the code and doing some routine inspection), said I could pick it up if I wanted and schedule an appointment.
I got the car and the CEL is now gone... odd right?
Dealer wouldn't fix it under the goodwill program and I had a frustrating experience w/ them overall.
Took it to Ruf since I'm in Dallas. Tech said he does not hear any rattling, but it is the cat that's causing the issue. Thinking of going with a Softronic flash to eliminate the CEL and get a little boost in the process. Thoughts?
Not odd at all, that simply helps confirm it is the first gen cats and O2 sensors giving bad readings, the flash you are considering should fix your issue and give you better drivability.
Hello,
I mentioned on the phone it depends on the condition of the Cat. Should it be intact then that is an option yet if it is coming apart I would replace the Cat as it can travel to the rear of the exhaust and plug it and also get ingested causing misfires. When replacing it you can go a couple ways. One being stock ones or aftermarket etc. as they should be replaced together.
Best Regards,
Scott
Assuming your CATs are definitely bad and its not an O2 sensor, I think the best bet is to buy the Magnaflow direct Bolt on Header/Cat replacement and have a good Indie shop that you trust install them. They are only about $400 each and have a 5yr 50,000 mile warranty:
You know this was like a year ago.
as always the cats usually aren't bad, but if they are, then yes there are aftermarket options for less.

I am glad it was retrieved; I have an '07 base with the same codes. My searches helped but most posts dealt with the warranty and 'goodwill'...:hilarious:
Replaced the
downstream
/rear O2s, still get codes.
Per above advice, will order
upstream
/front o2s asap.
If they do not help I think I'd go Softronic, since looking for exhaust leaks i found none. Car sure
runs
great...
ANYTHING but rusty,
stuck
exhaust studs!
Thnks
