I was driving home today and sitting in traffic all the sudden it felt like my clutch pedal had half the tension it normally does. When I let the clutch out I don't know how to describe it but it felt notchy or wobbly. I was able to shift and pull off the freeway without trouble but after lots of googling I'm having trouble figuring out what I should look at. I drove it on and off the flatbed and into my driveway. I don't hear any noises and can shift normally. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.
This happened to me a couple of years ago. The pedal lost almost all of its' tension overnight. Clutch engagement was really odd too.
I put in a new clutch kit and all was well again. Better than ever actually.
Lots of similar clutch issues mentioned on here. FWIW, my clutch was OK one minute and practically useless then next. No warning. I managed to limp home. New clutch, flywheel, pressure plate etc and better than new.
oh. forgot to mention. most folks experience this at 50K miles +-10k
Sounds like your pressure plate has failed. Time for a new clutch. Rockauto is the cheapest place to buy one.
My car just started doing this too. 56k miles. Clutch pedal is softer than normal, and doesn't return like it should. It starts engaging just off the floor, but doesn't engage fully until the top of pedal travel. And it's "shuddery" while engaging. Clamping force is poor during engagement, but it holds fine once fully engaged (and my car is turbocharged). So as long as I drive like grandma off the line, I can still get around...
I'm wondering if there's any chance I have an air bubble in the hydraulics, or a problem with the master or slave cylinder seals? Fluid reservoir is full to the top, so I'm not losing.
It turned out to be my throwout bearing.
Did you end up replacing the clutch/PP while everything was apart?
I figured while I was in there I might as well.
