A few times the past few weeks my coolant warning light has flashed. Each time it went off after 30-60 seconds.
I checked today and level is below minimum.
I understand that
Porsche
coolant is best, but I can't get to the dealer at least until middle or end of
next
week.
What could I use in the meantime? Can I fill with distilled water to the fill mark or use something else more readily available?
It's for a
2007 cayman s
with 16k miles. I haven't seen any obvious leaks. It's been very, very hot here. Car is driving normal and temp gauge never goes above the halfway mark.
Thanks.
Yes, you can fill with distilled water short term. Whether you can use non-
Porsche
coolant is bit controversial, but there are some who say that you can. You need to get a specific type but I don't remember what that was (sorry).
I have a 2007 CS and my
Porsche
dealer said water is just fine. He actually said any water is fine but after reading a lot on here I just bought distilledto be safe (this site causesmy car anxiety to go through the roof sometimes!)
That's true - both the tap water and P9-induced anxiety. :hilarious: Downside of reading into too many things online.
One thing to remember is that tap water has minerals, etc., that you don't want making deposits (over long term) or raise the freezing point in the winter.
Ten days of almost 100 degree temps around DC a few weeks ago and my 128i did this.
BMW
sells a small top off bottle of coolant and I bought two bottles. Check the level and mine was about a bottle low. No leaks, it has just been very, very hot. After adding a bottle all has been well. I would stop by
Porsche
and see if they have something similar or just top off with distilled water.
When I pulled my engine cover recently, I noticed white dried spatter, which turned out to be from the original coolant expansion tank cap losing seal under pressure (mine was 996.106.447.01). I replaced that with 996.106.447.04, and replaced the gasket on the coolant fill cap 987.106.170.00. So far my levels havent moved at all after a top-up with the expensive stuff and distiller water.
It's a cheap and simple hedge, especially given the lousy reliability of the original expansion tank cap. You might take a look.
Also, if you are in the Littleton area, I have a gallon of the OEM coolant and distiller water. You are welcome to come top up correctly.
I had a coolant low light come on in my 2007 cayman 2.7 and noticed white dried spatter all over the cap where you add coolant and had to add almost a gallon of distilled water! I'm hoping it was just low, haven't had the car for too long and it runs great temp gauge always straight up in middle, I had the air filter changed and oil changed but never looked at the coolant. Anyway is it possible for it to be that low and not be the water pump or something?
Just noticed this an OLD thread, but if anyone wants to chime in....
My mechanic said that some of the old filler caps were defective and replaced mine. I also had the dried splatter before it was changed.
As potta says, the caps are known to fail.
