ims
issues
Thanks Kosta
While your mileage may vary,
IMS
issues in the
Cayman
are rather overstated. All
Cayman
's received the latest version of the bearing.
Porsche
seemed to get it mostly right on this last iteration.
As the bearing is larger you can't just replace it without splitting the cases or boring out the hole for the bearing support. As to which version of
IMS
fix is better I don't think there's enough data.
This isn't an issue I'm losing any sleep over. If I ever go for a larger engine or need to have it rebuilt then is the time.
Best solution is to buy a DFI car, 2009 or better. If your going to track it.. If not don't worry about the
IMS
and have fun with the car.. If you are going to track it be prepared to sweat every time to go to the track....
I think you don't need to worry about it in a
2007 Cayman S
, your odds of having an
IMS
failure are extremely small, just go drive and have fun!
I'll start by saying that the following is my humble opinion..
Enthusiasm will drain your wallet quickly. There aren't any necessary mods to be done to your
cayman
if you want to "drive" on a track. Many a poster has said that spending money on learning how to drive is money better spent. I did spend money on some mods for lowering the car, adding some hp/torque, and a deeper oil sump. But these mods that were done had nothing to do with me driving "better" on a track. Like many posters have also said, you can't mod out poor driving skills.
For those who are new to the
porsche
brand and new to sports car driving in a controlled environment, you don't need that
LSD
quite yet.
Enjoy your
Cayman
!!!

My
2007 Cayman S
needed a clutch a few years ago. I spent the extra $800 for the DOF. Did the install myself.
When I pulled the outer seal off the
IMS bearing
I was shocked to see no grease in the bearing - only engine oil.
IMS
failures aren't that common, but they do occur. To me, the DOF was money well spent.
I have seen 1 IMSB failure at 148,000 miles. When the sump is filled to the specified full level, the entire IMSB is half submerged in oil. Any grease packed when mfgd will be washed out by oil that enters by capillary action when the engine runs. THe oil remains. I have changed the IMSB in situ while developing my tooling for exactly that process. Both bearings I've changed contained a sufficient amount of oil for lubrication. I've seen one post of a failed brg that appeared to have been run extremely low on oil and based on the photo, I'd say extreme operator neglect. All parts of the bearing were blue indicating severe overheating and the cage (which is softer by design) had failed. I see no design reason for adding the DOF, but to each his own.
