The cable routing you have is what I ended up with when I installed the SRP.
Leading evidence: 'Install srp' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust cables per this video later this week' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I'm going to adjust the cables per this video later this week:
Clean fabspeed air filter and install some sound insulation

Suggestion
After that I still gotta clean the Fabspeed air filter and install some sound insulation to lessen the deafening wail of the M97 + Remus Exhaust.

For me - the biggest improvement was replacing OEM cables with Numeric.

BTW, there are several guides on replacing the shifter and or cables.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Porsche SSK Shift Effort
I picked up an 06 CS about a month ago and it came with a GT3 Porsche SSK installed. The shifting seems to require more effort than I think it should, but it's possible that's just the nature of the SSK.
I'm going to adjust the cables per this video later this week:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnPmkXDk1r4
But I took the engine cover and noticed the cable routing is a little different than factory. Do the cables need to be rerouted?
Also I noticed some wear on the cable conduits as well. Is this something to be worried about?
Thanks

Cable routing looks normal to me and the wear on the outer sheeth is to be expected from rubbing against aluminum cover above it, will take decades until it actually wears through to the actual cables inside that sheeth.
The cable routing you have is what I ended up with when I installed the SRP. Keeping the factory routing of both on the right side IIRC with one of the aftermarket plenums seems to really put a kink in the left cable. One on each side seems to put each cable into a straight run into the transmission brackets. No clue of this helps the cable breaking issue or not. Having straight runs at the ends probably won't hurt and might help.
Slightly higher effort is to be expected with a SSK, since you are reducing the amount of lever. But "slightly" is the key word here - if it feels really stiff or hard to move then something's not right. Start by disconnecting the cables at both ends and make sure there is no binding.
Someone will correct me it I'm wrong (I am certain
) but a GT3 shifter is not an SSK - 2 different things. I installed a GT3 shifter and it has the exact same throw as the OEM one. Just metal bushings instead of nylon. So the effort should be the same. AFA cable routing, mine is a
987.2
and both my cables come over the passenger side and one crosses aft of the engine.
Plot Twist!
Went through the receipts from the previous owner, turns out the CS has the Porsche SSK (
Suncoast Porsche Parts & Accessories Porsche Short Shift Kit
) not the GT3 shifter.
Getting ready to sell my Mazdaspeed Miata so I took it out tonight, the shift action in that car is exactly what I want. Short and mechanical but with solid feedback indicating when it's in gear. Made me really critical of the CS's shift action.
That being said, I just ordered a GT3 shift console. I know the throw will be longer, but I'm willing to trade distance for feedback and effort. Should be a direct replacement right? (Probably should've researched it more)....
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Once the center console is removed it is basically a drop-in replacement. The shifter will come with a centering tool. For me - the biggest improvement was replacing OEM cables with Numeric. But I did it for reliability. The added precision was just a side-benefit. I'd seriously recommend doing the cable upgrade while the console and shifter are out. That's about 1/2 the effort when swapping cables.
BTW, there are several guides on replacing the shifter and or cables. Center console removal isn't hard but you need to know how to remove the various trim pieces. I used a composite of several guides and articles since there were weaknesses in each. Numeric has a document (and I believe a video - on their Facebook page). At the time I did mine, their documentation was very sketchy and was aimed at installation in an already stripped race car (therfore no trim removal required).
Gonna start with just the GT3 shift console. I justified buying it cause I'll put the SSK in the classifieds to pay for it.
Fixing the things I don't like about the car before improving things that are already good enough.
You and I got our
Caymans
about the same time. I had also been looking at Mazdaspeed Miatas, prior to getting my 944, instead. I do like their shifting action.
Having driven a 2006 CS with
Numeric shifter
and cables, I was instantly in love with it. Feeling pretty financially overextended, right now, I held off on getting the shifter, but I did get cables for preventative measure. The cables are incredibly stout!
This is my solution for the short shifter
It is really nicely made for the price, and by reports, it seems to do exactly what the more expensive aftermarket solutions do.
I have yet to start the project due to time, and that I am refinishing my console to body paint before I reassemble it. But, I believe that the SSK along with Numeric cables are the way to go for precise action and reliability of the known-to-be-delicate original shift cables. Numeric will (did for me, at least) give a forum member discount, if asked.
ok. Ok. OK. OKAY. I ordering a set of
Numeric Shifter
Cables.
I read more and more about 987 shifter cable failures and out of fear/paranoia/wisdom decided to pick up a set of Numerics. My GT3 shift console just shipped from ECS Tuning today, but I'm on the road for work until 5/12.
Looks like my car projects never end. In the last month I did:
987 CS:
Oil change
Brake fluid flush
Spark plug change
MK6 GTI:
Brake fluid flush
Front rotors
Front/rear pads
I'll install the Numerics first and see how I like the shift feel with the new cables and SSK. Depending on the feel, I'll either return the GT3 console or install the GT3 console and put the SSK in the classifieds.
After that I still gotta clean the Fabspeed air filter and install some sound insulation to lessen the deafening wail of the M97 + Remus Exhaust. Even though my first few months of ownership have been a lot of work, it makes me appreciate the CS more. It's not simply a car I bought, but one that I bought, researched, and refined.

Took me about 4 hours, but I got the Numeric Shift Cables installed. Shift effort has been greatly reduced. I bet that the OEM cables just needed to be adjusted, but the added security of beef'd up cables and the improvement in feel was worth it.
Didn't install the GT3 shift console, gonna rock the Porsche SSK for a week and see how I feel.
Congratulations! My
Numeric cables
are still in the box. Waiting on refinishing the spare center console.
Hoping to get to it in the
next
two weeks while the GF is out of town.
Could three have been some called fragging in your old cables which would have increased the resistance? You may have dodged a bullet. Those beefy cables should now last a lifetime, at least.
