My 2006S has developed a rough running problem.
Car running absolutely normally previously, as I slowed for a round about, I noticed it was running very very rough. It seems to pull fine on the move with the revs up, but it's super rough at idle / low revs and prone to stalling.
Shop can't see the car for a few weeks, so I grabbed a Durametric clone. It's reporting misfires on all cylinders. No other fault codes.
Thoughts?
Could be the
MAF sensor
. Would be worth removing and cleaning it to see if that makes any difference.
Tried unplugging it (MAF). Made no difference.
With the engine cover off, it is apparent that there is quite a loud noise / rattle that seems to be coming from around the central 'T' section of the induction pipes atop the engine. You can feel it with you hand on the 'T' quite distinctly! Quite peculiar!
Seems to rise and fall with revs. Momentarily stops and starts again as the revs change but it's there most of the time. Almost like there is something trapped in there!
Is there an active flap for changing the induction properties? I can hear something electric whining / adjusting from that area upon shutdown.
If I had to guess, I'm thinking something to do with this flap inside the stock plenum:
Is that an active flap?
OK, apparently that flap is vacuum operated.
It certainly seems like the noise is coming directly from the T where that flap is located, but things aren't always as they seem!

Dropped the thing off at the shop. Out of my hands now. We shall see!
just guessing its the coils? anyways hope its nothing serious and gets resolved so you can be back to driving your car soon!
Damn, that's a lot of codes! Hopefully it's a pretty straightforward fix.
Unlikely to be coils unless all six failed at the same time and also are creating the noise!
I'd guess the crank position sensor. If that's off all the ignition timing would be off.
Does not account for the noise!
It was a free guess after all. In any case if the engine is misfiring the loud noise and rattling described wouldn't be surprising.
The kind of noise it's making very much would be a surprise!
For the record, this did indeed turn out to be a fault with the active flap in the induction T.
Not a common fault, but recorded here for posterity!
Thanks for the update. May help some else some day.
So glad that I got mine out last week, in preference for the
IPD plenum
.
Now, to get that 1970s plastic heater control valve replaced with proper metal....
