Have had the car for just under a month and am loving it. Aside from a weird vibration in the interior when driving in low gears in the city at around 4K, the car as been amazing.
I am a little concerned about something that has arisen over the past 72 hours. When it initially starting the car, I let it settle from 1k to 800-600 on the tach and wait for five minutes until the temp is at 125-150. Drive nicely until she is at 175, then drive it like a Ferry intended it to be driven.
I have noticed a squeak however upon initial startup in the morning or when the car has been resting. I thought at first it was the clutch pedal but I am now thinking it might be the linkage. It varies in degree and load on the engine doesn't seem to matter. Gears used are first and reverse. It appears to lessen after getting underway but can pop up now and then. While I understand I got a used car, I am a little paranoid when something like this arises.
PPI was a clean bill of health from a Porsche dealership.
Any ideas or thoughts are greatly appreciated.
When does the squeak happen? When you push in the clutch pedal?
Be aware that there is no clutch "linkage" per se. It's a hydraulic system, so any squeaking would be at the pedal, or at the throwout in the bell housing.
It appears to be when I begin letting out the clutch with starting the car from a stop. Thanks again for clarifying! Hope this helps.
In conducting some follow on research, it sounds like it might be the throw out bearing based on others' posts and descriptions. I am debating whether to take it to a one of few recommended indies or the closest Porsche dealership. While it is a used car, I have only had it for a month.Damn it...
In 40 years of owning manual transmission cars, most of them Porsches, I've never had a throwout bearing go bad. Not saying it's impossible, but seems unlikely to me.
You might have a friend stand outside the car while you reproduce the noise, to try and locate it. It might be a suspension bushing that squeaks when the weight shifts on the car, or something similar.
To follow up, fired up the car for the drive home from work. No squeaks, no odd noises. My commute is 60% heavy urban surface street driving and 40% highway so if it was going to rear its head, it had plenty of opportunities to do so. I did get a little bit of white smoke/discharge out of the exhaust but it has been much cooler here and it is very damp and rainy out, so I am disregarding that as being indicative of anything. Got out to take a look and no odor. Got home, got a long run in and just started her up and let the engine run again while I took her weekly "vitals" and aside from a slight drop in TPs, I noticed nothing unusual while the engine was running. No odd sounds or anything, no visible emissions from the exhaust (full garage parking). Not sure if moisture has anything to do with this, but I know that this sort of weather would make my Legacy GT make some weird sounds and creaks.
Also, I went out with a group of enthusiasts on Sunday for a morning drive to take advantage of the first bout of solid spring weather. Drove the car the way it was intended to be driven in a spirited fashion, and it was my first time on back roads and exploring the car. She behaved great and that is when I started more pronounced squeaks in 1st and R upon starting the car. We took a pit stop at a local pub for a beer and some snacks after finishing and I don't recall her doing it then. It happened that morning though.
I do have a friend who has ownership experience and is pretty solid when it comes to mechanics. He owned a 986 for many years before switching to a 2002ti. I will ask him if he would be able to listen to the car this weekend. I feel fine driving her and she seems incredibly solid, but being a first time owner, and receiving the clean bill of health on the car for the PPI conducted only a month ago, I feel like part of me is overreacting as I learn the car and explore her habits under different driving conditions.
I am going to give this a week and keep documenting in the car log. If it still persists, I am going to look into going to TPC or a Porsche Dealership...
I hope I am just overreacting...
Good start up today, oil was where it needs to be. Had three squeaks on the drive this morning going from a stop to first, very quick but noticeable. Wet and cool, 45-55. If it persists through next week, I am going to take it to the dealership if my friend can't think of anything.
Any chance your rotors are getting rusty in the wet?
Car is daily driven and garaged but that is not a bad idea given it has appeared during rainy weather. Ironically, when I took delivery of the car a month ago, it started raining on the drive home but I didn't notice anything. Will check out the rotors but I don't think they collect quickly enough to make a difference. But I will verify. Thanks!
Drive home was eventless. Dry, sunny, 65 and no odd exhaust and no squeaks. Hopefully this is all just a by-product of all the rain and crap we have had as winter departs and spring arrives. Inspected brakes and no noticeable rust or residue for this week's weather. Engine sounded great and pulled hard...
Step in the right direction to a weather oddity and let's hope it continues that way. Also, squeaks this morning appeared to be coming from passenger side rear. My hearing is a little shot from my time in the military but it sounded like it was just aft of the passenger seat. Sort of where that weird vibration might be coming from.
