Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

I bent that exact tab while installing a new set of struts when raising the knuckle into place with my floor jack before tightening the bolt that clamps the knuckle in place.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I had a really weird strut failure on my 07 last weekend on the track… the rear left lower strut mount (the welded on tab itself) ripped off in the middle of a really tight turn… it broke free and shot my strut straight down into the cv axle, which ruined my tire and my lower control arms ball joint got messed up… new parts are getting here this week but I thought I’d share this to see if anyone else has experienced such a failure? POST 2Original post

Not sure why it marked the picture of the struts as 18+? But alright I guess haha.

POST 3Original post

haha must be the camera angle Ksoder.....and what's that you're holding? wow that seems serious that a suspension part could fail like that. Glad you're ok and hope for a speedy recovery for your ride....

POST 5Original post

Yeah, OEM, I’ve got some b8s going in with h and r springs on all 4 though, I don’t trust the other struts now haha

POST 6Original post

Is there any record (Carfax, Autocheck) indicating a prior accident? I can imagine that being weakened if the wheel on that side slammed into something like a curb..

POST 7Original post

Wow… those parts are made so thick/heavy, that is an oddity..

POST 8Original post

Hence my question above.. for that to break it isn't a normal fatigue sort of thing. Something external weakened the metal, perhaps bending it - then having it bent back when it was repaired. I'd almost bet on some sort of collision damage involving the rear wheel.

POST 9Original post

So my theory is that tab failed because the bolt that clamps the knuckle onto the bottom side of the strut came loose. That tab of metal is only a few mm thick and definitely not strong enough to take the entire load of the rear corner. I bent that exact tab while installing a new set of struts when raising the knuckle into place with my floor jack before tightening the bolt that clamps the knuckle in place. I’m sure someone who’s more familiar with suspension can chime in, but I’m fairly confident in the loose bolt theory.
