Coming back into a Boxster. previously had a 2005 that I picked up after Porsche replaced the engine due to a catastrophic failure at about 25k miles
New one will be strictly a weekend car. No tracking ( I have a BMW for that) and something the wife wants to drive so it will be a PDK. I found a 2012 with about 90K miles seems to have all dealer service every 10K miles... for 90K miles the interior is is good shape, not a lot of wear. Its a bit pricey for high mileage but how do the second gen 987's handle the mileage?
Its almost a 10K leap into a 981, but since it's not a daily driver and I already have a few fun cars, it doesn't need the "refinement" of a newer model.
Wanting to get some opinions on the higher mileage, but with good maintenance records... Also, the car has been local and service done at local dealer. Will dealers discuss records of cars they've serviced?
90k isn't high from what I've seen. There is a thread somewhere for a "high mileage roll call" and there are many posts. I think I saw one with 200k recently, and many well over 150k. Given you're dealing with a weekend vehicle, you probably won't get there anyway.
I bought my 77k mile version with the same mindset. It was originally supposed to be a weekend only vehicle. Job changes happened along the way, so I lost the company car and now it's my DD, but I don't drive as much anyway (for other reasons)... so I don't mind it. And, yes, I'll be driving in the winter and snow as well... my take is that cars are meant to be driven.
I see many 987s at well over 120k without issue... I'd say your fine.
You didn't mention, but are you looking at Base or S models? And was your 987.1 which?
Just curious since you mentioned that your 2005 was a replacement motor Boxster. Did you keep it long? I'm assuming you had a good enough experience with it since you are willing a second go.
I have a 2005 Base myself. It's still less than 50,000 miles, but it is such a playful version of the Flat6 and from everything I've seen, one of the most understressed and long lasting versions of that motor. (fingers crossed, of course)
I too intended it to be a weekend sunny day toy, but much to my surprise I reach for the P-keys almost exclusively if I'm the only occupant. It qualifies as my "daily" if I was forced to designate one of 3 cars. And with 2 trunks it's incredibly practical!
Anyways, I wish you good hunting and a welcome home. Lol
Good point - S/non-S makes a difference. S-versions can have bore-scoring issues, and I don't believe there is a full/clear understanding of what causes it. IIRC the recommended practice is to change oil more frequently and use the right stuff... so you can prevent it, but with a used car you don't know what happened before, so scoping during the PPI would be a good idea.
Looking at a Base... essentially just a top down weekend driver. I get my HP kicks in my Aston Martin and Track/ Autocross a BMW.
My 2005 was a great deal. I bought it with about 55K miles on it in 2015 and when I checked the car fax, there was a major service, with alot of items done to the car... I almost passed but it had what I wanted, Red/Beige very loaded... I called the dealer and spoke with the service advisor. A few days later he called me back and confirmed they put a new motor in in under warranty and sent me paperwork on it. It was a 2007 engine, still had IMS but the beefier one...Overall the car was great, I like working on them and have a quick jack that makes life easier... I upgraded HU and amp, added back up cam, fixed the top that wouldn't go into the tracks, did all the services/fluid changes... It was a great car
I bought my Aston Martin a couple of years later with the intention of keeping both ( I called them the "Topless" and the "Tuxedo" and had them both for about 4 months before I ran out of garage space and my wife wanted her AMG GLE in the garage, so I sold it...
I have more garage space now so back on the hunt.
I'm sorta thinking the same thing...It has all factory recommended services done. Tires have less than 5K miles and the car also has some PPF on the front
