What I wouldn't do is start a thread about something as trivial as a breakdown and used words like 'gutted' and 'flamed'.

Suggestion
Any OPC that has failed to correctly ensure self cleaning paint is renewed as part of the 111 point check is clearly trying to pull your pants down and is reflective of a wider malaise in society.

Sorry to hear, but at least you have the OPC warranty behind you and shouldn't be an issues getting sorted. Imagine if it had been a private purchase...
This flaming you did? You do know they will be the ones fixing the issue, yes? You rejecting a second hand car over a split hose might not have them in the best and most helpful of attitudes.

The supplying dealer won't be doing the work anyway. Wouldn't they have checked the condition of the hoses prior to selling?

...also I must lower my expectations and pre empt that I'll need to be recovered 24hrs after collecting a £30k Porsche approved vehicle. Silly me.

I see you also own a Chimaera....

Thanks. AA bloke reckons it's a split coolant hose.
Most likely. Not a massive issue and nothing to get worked up about, wouldn't have damaged anything as you stopped straight away. Pipes do sometimes crack and split or clamps can come loose, you're overreacting if you're thinking of rejecting the car.
A very disappointing start to your ownership experience, but hopefully just a minor fault that can be quickly sorted. Maybe just a case of 'sh!t happens'.

Fair point, possibly so. I think it's because it has happened so soon after purchase...and the check is supposed to look at the condition of hoses and check for leaks etc. It gets me doubting what else has been missed. AA bloke reckoned the wheels hadn't even been taken off due to how tight the bolts were, just his opinion though. Waiting for a recovery truck to get to to my local dealer now. It will either all be sorted under warranty or the supplying dealer will be coughing up for anything else. Will be good for another OPC to take a look at everything I suppose. There's been a few hiccups along the way with the supplying dealer, nothing that hasn't got sorted though in the end.
Not saying you can't be a little bit cross, especially if you've come to Porsche for reliability
but I suspect there are more than 111 parts in a modern car, so the check isn't going to pick up on things like a slightly split hose.
A second OPC is a good idea though, especially if you already have a slightly frayed relationship with the first. Out of interest, why not buy from the local OPC?

It was a very good price, I suspect due to their more remote location, and was the spec I was after.. Hopefully it wasn't a 'too good to be true' scenario. I'd hope buying approved used with a warranty circumnavigates that possibility though.

Apologies for the sarcasm, it's not usually like me. I've had a little time to calm down now...still awaiting recovery though. Like everyone said, I need to put it in perspective, it's inconvenient but hopefully just a split hose and I've got a warranty to cover that . I think this car may have had little use for a while and now everything is getting hot and expanding/contracting something may have worked loose.
Again, apologies.
No problems, I would be narked if my new car went all TVR on day one as well
Like you say, OPC warranty gives you enormous amounts of confidence that it will be a great car. Smiles and happiness with your local one will pay off. Here's to either a quick fix and a worry free future
Hang in there they are great cars...once its all fixed forget about it and enjoy your Porsche.
I must admit I'd have had a few choice words to say to the dealer...from experience watch the OPC's like a hawk they are just the same as any other dealer and will cut corners to save time and money.
Remember we need to see some pictures of your new car...after its been fixed of course...
Cars break down, even new ones. Every day. Its just a hose and you have a warranty. The 111 point inspection wouldnt have found this anyway.
It happens, the important thing is that the OPC repair it with no fuss and give you a 991GTS to play with!
Get some pics up when its fixed.

You've every right to be annoyed mate! I would be spitting bullets, but these things do sadly happen...
I am not overly confident in the quality of work that several/many (depending on your stance) of the OPC network franchises actually deliver nowadays. I've heard one too many stories of loyal customers getting shafted over a warranty claim, and of shoddy prep or shoddy maintenance work at service time to place much confidence in them as a whole. There are good OPC's but sadly the neglect of the few seem to outweigh the few that genuinely place the customer first and not profit. Just my opinion of course.
Annoyed that they haven't prepared the car properly pre-sale, but not necessarily surprised - would be my reaction.
Hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction and can get on and enjoy the car!

Shoddy prep? What have the OPC not done?
If indeed a hose has blown, are you saying that all hoses should be replaced as part of the prep (there are lots), or maybe they should all be removed and tested?
I dont know the exact details of course and neither do you. It all seems a bit over the top to me.
A hose has bust, let them fix it?
Straight back to OPC for a full and immediate refund, if that hadn't happened it would have probably run low on fuel or got dirty or some other serious problem within a short period of time anyway, why take a chance.

Any OPC that has failed to correctly ensure self cleaning paint is renewed as part of the 111 point check is clearly trying to pull your pants down and is reflective of a wider malaise in society. Things were never like this in the old days.
Some differing views coming through then, the beauty of the forum
I sense sarcasm even eclipsing that of my own from heliicopter123?
The car got recovered to my home as the local OPC had finished for the day by the time the recovery truck arrived. It's supposedly then being recovered to the OPC tomorrow. Let's see what they find. It's obviously a major leak somewhere as the AA chap poured coolant in and it was just as quickly gushing out from the under tray. Do you think hose leak/disconnection rather than water pump failure? I didn't hear anything 'go' before the warning light came on. I stopped within 10 seconds so hopefully no further damage...unless it is something else that's been failing. We'll see anyway.
Thanks for the comments, all welcome

I'm never convinced by these used car inspections. Do you actually get the list of what has been checked or is it like the BMW ghost AUC check?
To answer your question, yes. Which incidentally includes 'Radiator hoses/connections (coolant loss, leaks)'. I suppose it's a bit like an MOT though in that it's a snapshot of time and was fine at the time of inspection. Maybe after 400 miles something has split/become disconnected.
There are many coolant pipes/hoses/fittings not easily visible unless covers are removed, the OPC will not have gone to this detail. Sadly the car could be upto 7 years old now so its prime time for exhaust clamps, water/ac rads and various fittings to start causing problems depending on where and how it has been kept.
Hmm, I'm getting more nervous as the hours tick by. I was looking through the various bits of documentation, PCM, owners manual etc. I looked at the service record and it all seems fine with lots of stamps, recall campaigns etc. However, the car was advertised as having one previous owner, I have the PDF advert. It has indeed had four previous owners! It's an early (Jan 09) gen 2. I don't think it's necessarily a problem as I know these cars can be used as second vehicles or if the patter of tiny feet are immenent. Just an admin error or taking the P I wonder? I might revert to my first post and commence the flaming to the dealer principal
Should I just attempt to walk away from this? It's at the local OPC tomorrow so I'll see what they find/don't find. I thought going the OPC used route would negate all, well some, of the dodgy tactics!
PS
By walking away I mean attempting to reject the car...which most likely will be a nightmare.

I think you should just relax. They'll fix it for you in a day or so and then it'll be fine. Regarding the owners that is underhand but good luck rejecting on that basis when you had the chance to check the paperwork prior to purchase.
4 owners is not unusual in 7 years for a Porsche

Chillax man. Wanting to reject the car over a split host is massively OTT
As already mentioned they don't check hoses as part of 111 check.
What would you had done If God forbid the engine had a real problem ? Go to the OPC with a machine gun and massacred all of the staff ?
You have warranty and recovery FOC no need for panic enjoy the car

He thought the leak might have originated from the front near side radiator.

Worth mentioning the owner discrepancy when it goes in. You never know, with the inconvenience you have suffered and this you may get some goodwill (e.g. discounted/free next service).

Agreed. Slight problem is that I won't be taking it to the supplying dealer for servicing due to the epic distance from my home. It's a different dealer group too, I can ask if they can sort some type of voucher system out possibly? It doesn't overly concern me that there have been four owners, just that it was described and advertised as a one owner car. This plus it dumping its coolant and leaving me stranded for five hours on day two of ownership does take the edge off first time Porsche experience. I had to wait several weeks to see the nice AA man when I bought the TVR

Porsche don't seem to remove the wheels unless they really have to. They can do brake fluid change with them if on the car, for example.

Whoever you offer the car to in the future in part ex or maybe outright sale will see this as a negative and WILL knock the price for having a high amount of owners so bear that in mind.
My 2 year old F10 M5 had 5 owners in 2 years and the dealer I part exchanged it into knocked a few quid off, like many £100's!

But not properly...I found them out by chance on my car when I noticed all the inner bleed nipples had not been touched so old fluid still in the calipers.
I recently had a leaking front hose replaced on the Cayman. It was NOT covered by the Porsche warranty because the hose had aged and split. In order to replace it they had to drop the front sub frame and then do a wheel realignment when it was refitted. Total cost £530.
So be ready for this. I think you would be justified in claiming it's an unreasonable cost on day 2 of ownership, but you're dealing with another OPC which might complicate things a bit.

Crikey. Like you say, day 2 of ownership. I've spoken to the local and supplying OPC this morning. The car got picked up at 8:30 so it will be with the local OPC now. The supplying OPC are working with the local OPC apparently to get it sorted. Three months down the line if it had happened I might have sucked it up, day 2 though, I don't think I'd be unreasonable in getting them to sort it.
I noticed it mentions no routine maintenance or servicing will be required for 3 months or 3,000 miles as part of the used scheme, I bet their get out clause is the word 'routine' though.
I'll keep all you good folks updated, that's if I haven't bored you all to death with my woe already
AndrewsCayman said:

How old was the car (i) when bought and (ii) at the time the hose failed?
What does your particular warranty actually cover? Did you read it?
Porsche are chasing me (original owner) to renew their warranty for £500 p.a. now that my initial 3 years has expired....
good luck with the car; a hose on a car especially that age can go anytime, probably just bad luck;
I would be concerned if there was indeed mis-selling re number of previous owners, that should be spot on, and you should raise it with supplying OPC

Hi guys
Picked up a 987.2 Cayman s yesterday from an OPC. All was good on the 350 mile plus trip home. Been out today and accelerated up to 70mph on a dual carriage way, white smoke/steam, engine temp shot up and warning light came on. Pulled up and turned the engine off as fast as I could. The coolant then dumped all over the road. Currently waiting recovery. What's gone wrong?!? Remember this is an OPC car with the 111 check and a 2 year warranty. I have flamed the dealer and am threating rejecting it. Gutted as I love everything about it.
Any advice appreciated.
Flamed - What a steak?
Gutted - What a fish?
I'd have been slightly upset, and put it down to bad luck, and made sure that the OPC knew that I wasn't 100% happy about the situation.
What I wouldn't do is start a thread about something as trivial as a breakdown and used words like 'gutted' and 'flamed'.
But then I'm a grown up.
As above, I had a coolant hose split on my GT3 (under Porche Warranty) and it wasn't covered, rightly listed as a wear and tear item. Cost about £100 to replace.

Wow, I must remind myself never to employ your services if your expectations and standards are that low. Personally I don't class a breakdown as trivial the day after purchasing a car, quite the opposite, but then I have high standards and expectations

It's about expectations though in my opinion. I fully expected issues and expense with the TVR, and got lots of each. What I don't expect is for a supposedly official Porsche dealer prepared and approved car to leave me stranded at the side of the road on day 2 having lost all its coolant. One persons trivial is different to another. I bought a refurbished MacBook through the official apple scheme, guess what, it still worked on day 2 and still functioned as a laptop. Is it really unreasonable to ask the same of a car? Should I also roll over that the car was sold as a one owner yet it has had four?
I did put my first post when I was at the side of the road remember. I did calm down later
Ignore the morons. You have every right to be upset; you've bought a car in good faith, with a warranty, and it's already broken down. Not only is it inconvenient, you will then understandably worry if there's something else wrong with it.
Perhaps Porsche owners register quite high on the autistic spectrum?! I'll balance it out a bit - i'm sending you a big online hug right now
In all seriousness, i hope it's all fixed quickly and i would certainly expect a goodwill gesture. This is their opportunity to show they care about customer service and are willing to earn your custom in the future.

Phew, thanks for that, I thought it was my depression kicking in for a moment
I'm really not expecting perfection (some corrosion on the inside alloys, disc hubs, interior has a few marks etc etc which is all fine), I did expect it to still do the basic function of a car on day 2 though. Some views expressed seem to be 'You should have fully expected it to break down on day 2 and be prepared to to pay up'. Of course I expect bills for wear and tear items, just not quite yet

It happens with cars full stop, I accept that. I had no end of issues with a brand new 320d and it left me stranded twice. I don't think it being secondhand necessarily makes a car more prone to breakdown, more that preventive maintenance hasn't been done. I wasn't aming the 'day 2' comment at anyone particularly by the way

Tell your wife that you were lucky/inspired getting rid of the Golf just before the emissions scandal and that you have probably saved yourself £1000's.
I cant help you with the porcupine analogy!

Good ammo, thanks
You're right though about the GTD, I'm sure my Cayman, once fixed(!), will double in value over the next year as the last of the NA 6 cylinder, non bore scoring, proper steering version
A defective hose wouldn't have bothered me. Annoying that it failed so soon after purchase but no big deal.
However, a 1 previous owner car turning into a 4 previous owner car isn't on. Have you confirmed the spec is as advertised?

I don't know for sure its a defective hose as yet. It's probably more the fact it left me stranded for 5 hours that added the fuel to the fire rather than the actual cause. What I haven't mentioned was that my wife was with me...I did wonder what that whine was coming from the near side
I've left the owner issues with the dealer principal. I'm not after a pound of flesh and going all American litigationay on either of these issue, despite the fact I was perhaps a little emotional on my first post
Slight update. The service manger from the supplying dealer called me and apologised profusely. Spoke to the dealer principal too who again apologised and assured me I wouldn't be paying anything. I mentioned the number of owners issue and he took it all on board and is looking into it. I was honest and said it doesn't necessarily concern me as its circa one owner per 1.5 years but I have bought a car expecting it to be one owner and not four. I'm not expecting £xxxx off, but I bet come part ex time it will be a sharp intake of breath and a 'well it has had five owners you know'

Good news about the repair. It doesn't surprise me though, I've found our OPC to be quite reasonable about this kind of thing. My only disappointment is that in my own experience a Porsche with fsh supplied by an OPC has had so many things go wrong with it, I've had more reliable higher mileage cars in the past, including a 100 000 mile 924 S. I realise Porsches are in a higher state of tune and subject to more stress than your average car, but I thought their reputed engineering capabilities would have resulted in something more robust than a TVR or other British sports cars.

What does your particular warranty actually cover? Did you read it?
Porsche are chasing me (original owner) to renew their warranty for £500 p.a. now that my initial 3 years has expired....
The car was 7 years old when we bought it from our local OPC, just over a year ago. The warranty is the Porsche supplied one which covers mechanical failure, not wear and tear. The leaking hose was perished so not covered. If it had happened in the first few weeks of ownership I would have argued they should have noticed it was perished before they sold it, but 14 months later it's a difficult one to argue.
We've got 10 months of warranty left, I won't be renewing it because most of the regular failures have occurred, the engine is unlikely to fail and with Hartech 3 miles away I think they could provide me with better cover than a Porsche warranty on balance.

Another update. The local OPC Service Manager just called me. If was a hose seal that went, small part/fix but puts the car out of action of course. They're also replacing the rear tyres, front discs and pads at the supplying dealers expense. Should have the car back tomorrow...I'll get some pics up
Now just a little goodwill gesture needed for the 1 vs 4 owner error and then all we be good.
Thanks again for all the comments and contributions, well most anyway
"They're also replacing the rear tyres, front discs and pads "
that must be the good will right there, other wise if it passed a 111 check and was for sale why would it now need all new tyres, disks and pads 2 days later ?
good news for you though with all that lot new.

Well done for wearing them out in 2 days. Very impressive.

See below, or is that above now?
I'll have you know I did just shy of 34mpg on my way home

34mpg! No wonder it spat all of its fluid out! Pathetic!

I was driving rather more 'enthusiastically' at coolant dump gate

You've read between the lines very well
Yes, they should have all been changed prior to sale. I actually requested the new tyres as part of the deal as I was told they were at 3.5mm, OK for 111 check but getting close. They forgot to put them on. When I checked them after I drove home they ranged from 3.2 down to 2.6. I spoke to the supplying OPC who were going to send me some out or refund me the difference. My local OPC is now sorting it out though. I didn't know about the discs and pads though, so I guess they weren't at the '111' level either.

Seems you got a decent result OP, at least they're playing ball and you won't be out of pocket or maybe even got something extra out of it.
But the moral of the story should be... even if it's an OPC car make sure you check everything. The logbook and tyres are really things you should have spotted before you drove off.

Agreed. I did have a quick feel of the tyres, I also asked when I saw the 111 check that the tyres have been changed and was told yes. I did have my depth gauge with me but forgot/didn't get chance/trusted OPC (fool) that it would be OK. Yes, I, wrongly, assumed that all would be milk and honey going the OPC route. Sorted in the end but a lesson learnt.

Absolutely

I thought to trust in a similar situation as I also bought from a franchised main stealer,I had bought car over the phone
as the car had huge spec low miles and one owner,I had a long train ride to pick up the car,It was badly prepared But had managed to get a substantial discount , The car wobbled all the 400 miles home with out of balanced wheels this only happened over 60mph and on the test drive I bought this up with the salesman whom replied they all do that sir.. It was getting late and I needed to get home so I would deal with it the following day,I took car to my local at the stealers advice to balance wheels and they noticed a plug in the rear tyre out of the safety zone also the service book was stamped showing only a minor service when it should have been a major it also had very rusty exhaust bolts almost non existent that I thought wrongly would have been noticed on there service . I plagued them for a week or so at which they coughed up and reimbursed me for my losses to make up the service and replace offending tyre. Tpms went soon after that which wasn't covered under there warranty and now I've noticed something else that I know is covered but will know more after the weekend. Long and short of it is if they can get away with it they will..

Goodness, that really isn't good when you think you're buying peace of mind (well more than private). I hope you get yours sorted. I don't think us 'old car' buyers expect pristine perfection, but the basics ought to be right.
Edited by finestjammy on Tuesday 29th September 20:05
Glad it's getting sorted. I'm trying to decide whether I want the comfort of buying from an OPC with the warranty offered. Threads like this edge me towards it but then I don't like the restrictions on modifications, like a Carnewal mod to exhaust.
On a slight thread drift, is yours a manual and if so what road tax band does it fall in? I see conflicting information on the 987.2 S, some saying it's the highest band, some not!

Definitely £290
That's until the government realise Porsche have been telling porkies and will charge £5k, at least, a year
UPDATE
Just collected her. Feeling great again with shiny new tyres, discs and fat pads
It was a spring clip near the engine that had gone apparently, they cleaned out the front rads too.
I had a 320d as a hire car, supposedly not a bad handling car but it felt like a bouncy castle combined with a shipping container in comparison. Just shows you how good the setup is on the Cayman.
I'll get some pics up tomorrow
