Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Does anyone have any experience changing the valve cover gaskets on a 987.2 base model (2.9) engine? I did a plug change recently at around 77k miles and the plug threads were awfully oily and gunked up. Trying to get an idea if this is a manageable DIY or if it’s worth it to pay someone. Got a quote for $900 from an independent so I’m guessing there’s a good amount of labor involved.

POST 2Original post

access would be my concern. It is a straight forward job but getting to them is the bugger hence your $900 quote

POST 3Original post

It's not a base, but for my 987.2 CS the first step in the service manual is "Remove the engine" So, yeah, lotta labor if you do it by the book. I haven't been under there in a while so not sure if it's possible to do the job with engine in car, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be fun. That said, if the gasket was leaking oil into the spark plug tube you'd get oil on the coil pack and insulator, not on the plug threads. If the threads are oily but the other bits were clean it's probably not coming from the gasket.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
