POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am in the process of looking for a 996 911. I think I found one that is of interest. It is a 2003 1 owner C2 with 25k miles. It was stored from Nov-April months. I have done a lot of research and the only big issue I see with these cars is the slight chance of the IMS bearing going taking out motor. The chances are slim of it happening but this is a car with low miles and did sit stored for long periods of time and I know the chances seem greater with these. I just want to buy the car and enjoy it and not worry about the motor blowing. Down the road I may do the LN Eng retrofit ceramic bearings I believe but for now would you feel safe just installing the IMS Guardian and driving the car? Then if it does pick up warning of shavings then at that point to the LN Retro Fit. I really wanted to get an extended warranty on the car but I am finding it impossible to find a Co that will provide a warranty on a 2003. Any suggestions there? Since from what I could read the 996 from 2003 and on seem pretty built proof except for this IMS thing and wondering about skipping the warranty and just installing that IMS Guardian. The other cars I am looking at are 2008 M3 and 2007 M5. I have owned older models of both but never a 911. Open to any and all thoughts. Thank You

Ok, first, welcom to the 996 forum. How much are you going to spend on this car? You will need a good PPI. So let's look at your concerns and questions. IMS - yes the actual failure rate is low considering the number of cars produced. LNE Ceramic bearing - No, if your going to "fix" the IMS issue use the IMS Solution, it's new from LNE and Flat 6, has no moving parts. IMS Gardian - Yes I would feel comfortable with that, but I chose to do the retrofit, but that's just my preference. You should also put in a magnetic drain plug, I would also install the LNE spin on filter adapter and use a Filtermag. Warrenty - Call your local dealer and ask which one they sell and contact them, if you can get a warrenty do it. What causes a lot of problems with the Porsche's is them not being driven, and don't be afraid to drive it hard, these cars love high RPM's! What I would consider would be to have all you fluids changed to ensure there is no water build up. Use a good oil, I like DT40, but there are many to choose from. With the spin on filter adapter it's easier to change the oil which should be done every 3-5k miles, I do mine every 3 months or 3k but again that's just me. Hope this helps... Quote:

Thank you very much. The gentlemen is asking $31k for the car so I am not sure what would be a fair price. I was going to offer $28,500 for the car. It is a 1 owner, service records, 2003 C2 Manual. Does that sound fair? Or too much too less? The great news is I just called my Porsche dealer and they will do a 6/60k warranty on the drive train for $2500 which I though was great. He said that would cover any issues motor wise which was my main concern. Quote:

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here is what the car came with. He is considering my offer for $29k. I can get a 6/60 power train warranty for $2500. Also covers all seals, gaskets internal sealed parts. So I would be into it for $31,500. Now don’t flame me for this question please. the other consideration I have on the other side of the spectrum is a 2014 Mustang GT Prem with Track Package (Geared, Brembos Etc). I can get in to the GT brand new for $32,500.00 I have always owned MB's, BMW and Audi so used to that type of car and know the Porsche will give that to me. I understand the Ford will be loud not nearly as well built. I am not comparing these cars by any means. I am just thinking 5 years down the road what are these cars going to be worth. The Porsche will be a 16 years old and will have one year left on warranty. The Mustang will be 5 years old and no warranty. I know you don’t buy a car to make money but to enjoy it. But I still have to ask the question. I am leaning towards the Porsche but that ting in my head keeps saying I could get a brand new car for what I am going to pay. I have driven both and on the street the Mustang seems like he has more 0-60 than the Porsche but the Porsche seems so much tighter for an 11 year old car. Thanks

Thank you Jim. This is just going to be a car I drive from April till Nov. I have PU for a winter car. So the car will be driven everyday it is nice from April-Nov. I would say no more than 5k miles a year. From what I could see on the older 996's like 2003 beyond they are pretty built proof except the IMS thing and RMS. Does this sound about right? The IMS and RMS are my 2 big concerns. This power train warranty I am told will cover both. The other stuff like AC/Elec all I can hope for is the car will be not very problematic with only having power train warranty. Quote:

Regarding a new 2014 Mustang and a 2003 Porsche - the technology and comfort may play into it as well. The newer Fords have VERY decent build quality and technology compared to an 11 year old car. Regarding the Mustang GT Premium w/Track Pack, bumper to bumper warranty, excellent performance - I'd suggest far superior to the base 996 C2, with conveniences that make for a very livable car for the everyday drive, with torque to pass just about everything. Very hard to find counterpoints. It comes down to your preference - an older car that is still fun today (but may have a concern or two regarding maintenance), or a new car with almost twice the power, new technology, and handles just as good (if not better, regarding the track pack), full warranty, etc... How much do you like Porsche?

These are very good points. So at the end of the day the Mustang is faster and I think would handle about the same with Track pack. I guess the question comes down to do I want to drive a car you do not see every day as much or a run of the mill Mustang. This is literally killing me making this decision J . I go back and forth on both but only money to buy one J Quote:

Get the one that's going to put a smile on your face when you drive it, and not just the first couple of times, everytime, in 1,2,3 years from now are you going to still smile when your behind the wheel? Evertime I get in my C4s, I smile and I think, this is mine and I love her. Quote:

POST 20Original post

Quote: If it helps - you just contemplated one of the most (arguably) current road race performers, with a LOT of torque, handling capabilities, technology, other creature comforts (power everything, integrated audio, steering wheel controls for etc...), and a full manufacturers warranty - to a car that is over 11 years old. If you want to enjoy a car now for the next month or year, possibly two - get the Mustang, you may be completely blown away by how well it performs, easy to live with, etc... The fact that you are contemplating a car that is 11 years old tells me you may enjoy it for the next 11 years.

POST 21Original post

I've owned lots of cars in my life. I've owned sedans, sports cars, SUVs and vans. The two cars that I've enjoyed the most are the two least practical cars. As impractical as they are, they are the cars that evoked the most emotion in me. They are the cars that made me smile every time I drove them. They are the cars that connected with me in a way that made me overlook crazy things like small or non-existant back seats, outdated electronics, etc. If you buy a car based on facts and figures and take emotion out of it, then it's hard to justify a Porsche. If you let your heart guide you, then it's hard not to buy a Porsche. Only you can decide what is right for you... FWIW - my two favorites: - 2002 Porsche Carrera 4S (my current daily driver) - 1979 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

POST 22Original post

Well guys I went and looked at the 911. As soon as he opened the airport hanger it was sold. I can always get a Mustang. This is a one owner 2003 and has 21k on it. It looks brand new. I can get the 4/48 bumper to bumper through my local Porsche dealer for $2,800 which I am doing.

POST 24Original post

Granted a new mustang is a really really nice car, however perhaps you need to step up the model 911 you are looking at. Maybe a c4s cabriolet. A beautiful work of art. And believe me the speed thing is not going to be that big of a difference. Something about a Porsche just entrances you and makes you want to drive it everyday. The Mustang, a great car just is NOT the same....

POST 27Original post

I remember when I was 16 and the 996 came out. I remember thinking, why would anyone pay $80 grand for a car no faster (0-60 - hey, I was 16) than a Camaro Z28 or SS/Trans Am that costs less than half. My good friend and fellow car geek got a Trans Am a year or two later and thought it was amazing. Fast forward to 2010, we both test drove 996's without the other knowing, mine a '99 C2, he an '02 Turbo. Neither of us had been particularly big on Porsche's before, but always respected them. We both had "OH!" moment and bought those cars. I completely agree with the comments above and just wanted to share my story. The new Mustang GT is a very nice, respectable, fast, reliable, bargain-for-the-performance car but there's just something about a Porsche...

POST 28Original post

Thank you guys for the opinions. Once I saw it I had to have it. I have owned AMG, M5 and M3 and the 911 has always been something I wanted. I am happy with decision. Go figure it snows here today so I pick it up tomorrow. I will get more pics up. I have seen some 911's that a wing comes up in the back I think at a certain speed. Is this the case on the 2003 C2 I bought? I did not notice while I was driving it

POST 35Original post

It appears to be a C2. The exhaust tips pictured were optional from Porsche or they can be added to any car. I often see people refer to them as "X51 exhaust tips". I'm not sure if they were actually included as part of the X51 power kit or not.

The tips were part of a package offered by Porsche. It was the tips plus stainless door sills etc. I looked up under and the tips are made by Eisenmann if that helps. May save some people here some money rather than ordering a Porsche part #. I really got to drive it this weekend and I love it. Very happy with decision. Now upgrades Are there any specific places to go to if I wanted to do say a tune, K&N and exhaust (Not Full). I am always looking to add more power and I know with German cars it comes at a big expense and not big gains. Thanks Quote:

POST 37Original post

Are there any specific places to go to if I wanted to do say a tune, K&N and exhaust (Not Full). Fisters exhaust, a local indy can do it. K&N, I used the original air box and put in a K&N free flow filter and really like it, more so than the full set-up. You can hear it sucking air! The Fisters, PSE/Gundo hack is nice and tame below 3500 RPM's but after that, nice and aggressive but not too loud.

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 3821635

Thank you very much. I think I will just go with the drop in K&N too then add the exhaust. I will also do some research or talk to Porsche dealer to see if there is a place that can do a tune. I would imagine there is more HP/TQ to extract with a tune and still keeping it safe motor wise. Quote:
