My dealer (Porsche of Hilton Head) called this morning to say that my car had arrived and that I could come in to see it, but could only test drive the launch car,as mine had not yet been prepped. Sounded good to me, as I had been up half the night wondering where my early order car was ! When I got there, my Salesman (Steve Potter) was waiting outside to show me my new Speed Yellow / Black and Grey Cayman. What a beautiful car (Sorry, you'll have to wait for this weekend for pics, as I can't pick it up until Saturday, and neglected to bring my camera) - it looked exactly as I had pictured it. In the meantime, there was a Seal Gray Cayman waiting for me to test drive, so I jumped in, asking only one question of Steve - 'What are the rules ?' He asked that I keep it under 4500 rpm's which. I must tell you, was extremely difficult to do. From the dealership, we proceeded out for a 15 minute drive that encompassed some hairpins, quick sweepers and, in general, very good roads. While this test car was not equipped with PASM or Sport Chrono, I found the ride to be excellent - just stiff enough to know that you are in a Porsche, but not bone jarring by any means. Acceleration was very good, though a little down in torque anywhere south of about 3800 rpm. From there forward, the thing wanted to fly, and it was a shame that we could not take it to its upper limits, cause that's where it wanted to go !! Handling was nothing short of superb, brakes were excellent, fit and finish near perfect. The closest comparison I could make to the sound would be something similat to the GT 3 that I used to own. However, the Cayman note was different due to the location of the endine directly behind the driver - it was wonderful. Anyway, I don't know how to wait until Saturday morning, but I am tod that I must. Sorry for the long post - if anyone has any questions which I can answer, I would be happy to try. Nobody is going to regret their purchase, I can attest to that !!!
Rick,
Yes you are right, the real thrill just begins at about 4200 rpm and then it just screams at you. The last car I drove was my 330 CI, and it was fun, but nothing compared to the Cayman. It actually caught me off guard when the cam kicked in. I cannot wait to see what's ahead of 5000 rpms.
Thanks for the report, Russ
Rick, You can keep on talking as far as I am concerned. I loved your post!
Rick,
Did it have 19's and Sport seats? If so what did you think?
Russ
Rick, I saw your car and my first ordered car (changed colors) unloaded today. The atlas grey car with the sand beige interior was my first ordered car. The yellow looked sick in person! Whack! You will turn some heads in that car. I also took a test drive today in the black car (my first) and all I can say is I was overly pleased and WHAT SOUND> EYE< YEYE EYE WHAT A SOUND!!!!!MY salesman let me run it up to the point of no return and we blew through 100 in thrid (no kidding).................they still haven't figured out where my car is! See you Saturday. All you guys will be blown away!!!!The car as awesome.
Russ,
I am sorry, but I am not sure which size wheels were on the test car. It did have the sport seats, and I found them to be very comfortable. My car has the Adaptive Sport Seats, and since I was able to sit in them, I can compare somewhat (even though I didn't drive mine). I think that the Adaptives will come in very handy at the track (which is the only reason I opted for them). In all other cases, the sport seats should provide more than enough support. Additionally, they were completely comfortable. The entire interior felt like a cocoon to me - just a perfect fit ! By the way, I had tried to order a sport shifter and was unable to due to their early unavailability. The dealership had offered to provide one at the same cost as the option would have been. At this point, though, I must say that the stock shifter felt just about perfect, and I may forgo the added expense of the sport shifter. The gearbox is a thing of beauty - very precise, no hunting at all, except that 4th to 5th demands a positive push to the right to ensure 5th instead of 3rd (definitely a no-no at high rpm's !) I cannot wai to get back in the car !!
Kevozzi,
I am sorry that I missed you today. I saw the car that you had initially ordered and thought it was gorgeous - too bad about the antenna, I don't blame you for chaging. Boy, I wish I had the opportunity to blow through 3rd at or near 100 MPH !!!!!!!!! Have you decided to go to the launch for sure? I'm thinking that I may be at home Zainoing the car !
I'm going to ride over around 4:00 in the 308 Ferrari with a few other Ferrari buds who want to scope the cars, then we are going for a little ride around the low country. You should join us in the Cayman.
Damn I loved that yellow! It looked so good in person. I saw it as they were peeling off the plastic. I can imagine how it looks all cleaned up!
Thanks Rick,
I am pretty sure that the test cars have 19's, and at one time I was worried that they would be too rough. I thought they felt great, and the sport seat were ver nice, you used the word Cocoon, and that is a perfect adjective!
Aloha Russ
