Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Clean photo is' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean photo is' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

New pistons & seals and fluid change annually has them working in top order for quite a few years now.

Suggestion
Im redoing a set currently but doing a quick pass at them …new hoses, hard lines, bleed nipples, pistons and seals but just stripping and repainting the calipers.

Suggestion
Just use a dap of silicon grease on the o-rings between the halves so they seal up without leaking.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
Starting a project to refresh my 911SC. I need to get the calipers rebuilt (including platting). I am based in Melbourne. Does anyone know a good brake restorer?
I already have the cores of the car.
Thankyou
David
Have you considered doing them yourself? Removing the pistons can be a pain and need compressed air or a grease gun. Send the calipers off for zincing and then pop in new pistons, seals, boots, pads etc. Its a satisfying job.
I agree. Just have to buy a RIBE driver off eBay, have your impact driver ready and having a quick read of PMB resto guide helps too:
The Ultimate Brake Caliper Restoration Guide – PMB Performance
Usually hate bleeding but I gave the gravity and tube method that PMB describe and that couldn't have been easier.
Lovely job bro!
Im redoing a set currently but doing a quick pass at them …new hoses, hard lines, bleed nipples, pistons and seals but just stripping and repainting the calipers. Your pic makes me a bit ashamed … maybe i’ll split em and send them off for blasting and plating tomorrow .
Yes, don't be afraid to split them. Just use a dap of silicon grease on the o-rings between the halves so they seal up without leaking.
With the RIBE driver, just use it to "hold" the bolt head and apply all the torque to the nut otherwise it will strip the RIBE driver.
Those in the photo were plated in my laundry and the hub vaporblasted on my back veranda so caliper resto is well in the realm of DIY'er with a tolerant partner.
... home plating and vapour blasting is elite level home DYI.
I have always been too afraid to split my calipers - just acid cleansed etc.
Is there a lot of internal residue when you split them and is it something that "must" be done in your opinion?
Generally, only those calipers that have been unused and have moisture contamination develop a residue. Regular fluid replacement pays off. Generally splitting the calipers is no more difficult than extracting the pistons so I just do it now routinely if I'm refinishing.
These are probably the worst calipers I've ever split as some bolts had corroded so badly that it took me a couple hours to separate. The photo is after they have been cleaned up and prepared to send off to the re-anodisers.
I regretted painting my calipers.
On my second refurb. I split them & had them vapour blasted & re-plated. New pistons & seals and fluid change annually has them working in top order for quite a few years now. No visual deterioration either.
OK that's it - I've just started splitting mine this morning ... will send them off to get blasted and zinc plated tomorrow .... and now along with the hubs and the backing plates for blasting and coating too ... I still have 9 weeks, 4 days and 14 hours and 12 minutes before I get my license back, so may as well do it all now !!
Hi All,
I am finally getting back to this project and the brakes. Thank you to those that replied above.
I have dismantled the calipers. Does anyone have a recommendation for a blasting and plating business?
Preferably Melbourne based.
Thank you in advance.
David
