I saw someone asked this on here a couple years ago and no one answered. I bent one of the differential bearings trying to remove it to swap to my new TBD differential. I ordered an aftermarket one, waited a week for it to arrive, and it doesn't fit. No
Porsche
dealer has been able to help (Napleton told me the wrong part #, I'm glad I didn't order that one). It's an SKF with 2 different #'s on it and when I type that in to Google, it doesn't come up. I have no idea what to do at this point. I'm close to trying to salvage my bent bearing but really don't want to chance it coming apart inside my gearbox. Somewhere, someone knows where to source these. Please HELP!
NEVERMIND!
I called Matt at Guard Transmission and he straightened me out. For future reference, part # is 01x409123 and the part is shared with
Audi
TT and VW as well.
A big thanks to Matt at Guard.
How in the name of everything, can you BEND a bearing!!!!!!!!
With a 2 prong
puller
. Matt at Guard Trans. said those bearing are nearly impossible to get off without mangling them. In retrospect, I should have used more heat and a better
puller
. I got one off undamaged using a 3 prong
puller
, but it wouldn't fit under the lip of the bearing on the one I damaged. Also, there are only 2 recesses under the one I bent to put the
puller
which necessitates using a 2 prong vs a 3 prong
puller
.
Which car exactly did you put these bearings into and did it turn out ok?
I'm trying to source diff bearings for my 987
Cayman S
year 2006, gearbox G87.21 and I'm having difficulties finding them.
The bearing inner races can be safely removed using the VAG1582 toolset. Specifically, you need the
VAG1582A
base unit plus the
VAG1582/1a
puller. Picture below on a Cayman open diff. The sweet thing about this tool is that it works via a collet that closes on the tapered rollers and pulls on them. It avoids the issue of lack of access to the underside of the inner race. You will also need the
40-105
press piece (or something like it) to sit on the end of the spigot: the VAG1582 spindle presses against it. Set up takes a little finesse, but the tool is a huge win if you do a lot of these. For some differentials, it gets rid of the need to remove the ring gear bolts.
Matt gave you the right number for the bearing,
01X-409-123
. Note that it is a different 58x80x20 mm bearing than has been used traditionally on Getrag transmissions used in Porsches. Getrag (who make the transmission) shifted to a CL7 grade bearing, which is a higher precision design commonly seen used for taper roller bearings on pinion shafts. It's more expensive, but it's the right part to use. Uwo, these are the correct bearings for your G87.21. I just checked, apparently Audi is no longer providing them, but they appear to be available from Porsche and VW as well as distributors like FCP Euro.
BTW, please note that if you are changing the differential, you absolutely, positively, no kidding have to reshim the two carrier bearings to reestablish preload and ring-to-pinion backlash. I just resurrected a G87.40 in which this had not been done, as best anyone can tell, by whomever had installed its Guard LSD. The damage was extensive, including a junked LSD, and the invoice was not small.
Hope this helps.
