I have recently (a month ago) purchased an '
06 Cayman S
which now has just over 111,000 miles. I know the starter is on its way out as it gives me that screeching sound just after starting once in a while. So I know a starter replacement is one of the things to address, first. I have not yet scheduled a full inspection, but will be, soon. But I thought I might ask so I can get an idea of what else to do while they are replacing the starter? Is there something else I should try and do at the same time?
Eventually I would like to replace the
AOS
and get the oil pan upgraded, but what else might I consider while replacing the starter? Thank you in advance for any information!
I would have the belt, pulleys, and especially the water pump inspected. They will all be exposed when you do the starter. If you're keen on replacing the
AOS
, this would also be a good time for that. But if you're not getting oil smoke and are not racing, it is probably fine.
Don't wait too long on that starter replacement, once it starts screeching (failure to promptly retract), it will get worse and worse and wear on the flywheel.
Thank you! This is exactly the information I was looking for!!
I will work it out with the shop and replace what I can afford to, depending on what they say & suggest. I'm not tracking the car until I am confident I won't have any issues, so eventually I do want to replace
AOS
with an upgraded one and get the FVD oil pan with X51 baffles... I won't be able to do all at once but will as budget allows. It has 111,000 miles now, and as far as I know it has the original
IMS bearing
, as well. But I will have them look at it. Obviously if it was going to go, it would have, by now. I have no doubt the car has been driven hard. Possibly tracked, before.
I also did the
AOS
when changing the starter with an original part (didn't want to chance it with OEM) and just general cleaning of the intake, filter. no symptoms - just due to proximity, age and I already had one on standby.
Be careful with the rubber support sleeves that are lining the plastic intake 'manifolds' as they are old and mine broke during removal. not very expensive and I replaced them both for peace of mind.
I also did order the support bracket for the starter which is probably optional - see here

A transmission/gearbox fluid change, brake flush or coolant refresh may be worth considering as well.
