Funny I was thinking exactly of the same solution but I suspect my sc is just a bit louder than normal.
Leading evidence: 'sc is just a bit louder than normal' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'sc is just a bit louder than normal' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Previous cars I have owned include mx5 na, nb, lotus Elise, 986 Boxster and now an SC. Always hankered for an air cooled 911 but what I wasn’t expecting was how raw it feels
the engine sound is dominant in the cabin you can hardly even listen to music. The Elise was also very raw but the perceived build quality is nowhere near the sc. I sold the boxster after an enjoyable 9 years ownership experience but like anything in life this human wanted a change. Need to get more used to the rawness of the sc. feel free to chime in for a general chat people.
That's the beauty of an air cooled mate...nostalgic noise of the 70's and 80's and the onset of tinnitus.
Jumping from a modern car to an air cooled Porsche is akin to listening to Ed Sheeran for years (
🤮
), to discovering Black Sabbath or Metallica turned up to level 10 on the volume dial. You know its probably doing some hearing damage, but jeez it's good!
You'll get used to it, and eventually you probably won't even want to listen to music whilst driving, and will just drink in the eargasmic delight of a flat 6 singing at 5000rpm.
If it gets too annoying, you can add some sound deadener to the firewall, parcel shelf and floor which helps a bit, though you'll always have some sorta noise in the cabin
Great cars!
Mine is the lazy driver car lowest hp model, puts a smile on your face.
Had it out on Saturday last
🙂
Got to swap out and drive my friends cayman r , was nice to actually see the sc from a seat of another car.
Yeah just chatting with Tim from nine auto a few days back. He pointed to two cars he owned a cayman r and his sc. he said if he was forced to sell one, he would let the cayman go and asked his wife to bury him in the sc when he dies.
the view out the front of my SC was nice, the smoothness of the 3.0 was lovely, the steering sublime, the clutch agricultural, the gearshift not much better, I didnt think it sounded particularly nice. It would have been a great car in its time for me but 20 years ago, yeah it was time for me to move on.
You and many other love them and thats the main thing, Enjoy!!!
I went on a Spyder Automobiles drive out to the Thompson Dam last month and it was a rare even split between water and air cooled cars. I was sandwiched between two other AC cars and it was awesome to have one in front and in the rear vision mirror. They are a beautiful little car!
Okay after the initial shock of transitioning to a non power steering older car, I think i am starting to fall in love with the sc. Even at slower speeds I am starting to enjoy the feeling of the gear lever vibrating when the car is in traffic, the purring of the air cooled engine, the learnings on how to drive a rear engined car vs super easy to place mid engined.
Toldya didn't I?
😅
👍
Heavy steering can be reduced with the right tyres and pressures, and you can buy an electrical power steering unit, yet they're not cheap.
Now not wanting to put the shits up you when you've only just bought the car, yet one thing I'll advise you of from my own unfortunate experience driving a rear engine car, is to be mindful of the well known 911 pendulum effect...a.k.a snap oversteer. (Look it up)
Getting cocky and too aggressive on the gas out of a corner, or even just being quick on a constant throttle at speed can have the rear step out when you least expect it to. People say to just keep on the gas which is normal for oversteer, yet that didnt help me at all.
I wasn't exactly Captain Slow in the hills when it happened to me, and I thought I could drive ok hanging with GT3's and the like, yet exiting a smooth uphill corner I knew very well, the rear stepped out and I stayed on the gas and the rear went left, gripped, right, left then right again and I was a passenger until I slammed side on into a guard rail on the opposite side of the road. Not fun at all, and it has slowed me down quite a bit ever since.
I know how it happened and it was my own fault so I only have myself to blame (still feel the effects of that in my right shoulder a few years later), yet these things are a different animal with a shortish wheelbase, a decent amount of weight at the rear and they're not exactly slow, so although they really are a superb car to drive and handle well for how old they are, just be mindful they are definitely a different driving experience to what you're used to
😁
Went for a drive around strathewen area. Great roads. What really shocked me was how close the handling felt to my Boxster 986. Credit to the guy that setup the suspension…so neutral. Love the rigidity of the chassis in hard corners vs my Boxster. The steering feel in the sc is delicious… much more feel vs hydraulic on the Boxster. Loving the SC so far but i still find the engine still too damn loud … the sound just dominates the cabin too much.
Funny I was thinking exactly of the same solution but I suspect my sc is just a bit louder than normal. Have to ask my go to mechanic whether the ssi headers or dansk exhaust contribute to the loud internal cabin SPL.
Looks good mate. Liking that colour too
👍
I have SSi's on mine with some sorta 2 in 2 out muffler which could be a Dansk, and it is definitely a bit louder than other cars without that I've driven.
I have 3 different mufflers and they're all about the same volume, but different tone. I'd dump them all for an M&K muffler though, as they give off the best sound.
You should try my straight out megaphones. They give pedestrians instant temporary deafness. Cops hate them though
😅
The sc has an SSi header without the heat exchanger mated to a dansk exhaust. I love the sound of a good flat 6 exhaust note and it’s a big big reason I bought the car but…… I would love to enjoy the exhaust note without the cabin being boomed out by the engine sound. Now I kinda of understand i seldom see a wife travelling in a classic 911 with her partner.
😆
The noise/drumming is a common complaint with all air cooleds, yet as mentioned above you only really have the sound deadening or ear plug options.
As unpretentious as my missus is, she hates the sound and smell, which is why she has only been in the car twice. I'd call that a win personally, as then I don't have to hear "You're going too fast/Slow down/Boy this thing is loud and it smells like oil..." etc. I've offered to sell it a few times and buy a more comfortable 996, but she says I'll only whinge about selling the car I've wanted for 40 years...which is probably true
😅
