AFAIK it's never been changed; there isn't a receipt for it in the service history and it looks to be the original Porsche item from 2003 (can't see a date on it but the two bolts holding it in don't ever look to have been touched).

The car is used daily for 20 mile each-way commute, and I went down to Coventry yesterday (100 miles each way) so it's not been used for short journeys and there have been no warning signs recently (difficult to start etc.).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I came home from work today, got changed to go to the gym, and the car won't start (2003 996 C2). It just about tried to turn over, and for some reason both windows moved down and up as if the doors had just been opened / closed. The trip computer has also reset. Voltage is showing as just under 12v on the dash gauge. :nooo: The car is used daily for 20 mile each-way commute, and I went down to Coventry yesterday (100 miles each way) so it's not been used for short journeys and there have been no warning signs recently (difficult to start etc.). I'm happy to accept that the battery is dead (it looks to be the original battery from 2003) and just buy a new one, but is there anything else I should be looking for? :dont know: I've left it plugged it in to a charger for now...

POST 2Original post

A battery last 3-5 years. When was it changed last ?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

AFAIK it's never been changed; there isn't a receipt for it in the service history and it looks to be the original Porsche item from 2003 (can't see a date on it but the two bolts holding it in don't ever look to have been touched). I don't mind picking a new one up tomorrow, just wondered if I should check anything else too - I would have expected a bit of warning before the battery went, it just seems to have died very suddenly!

POST 4Original post

If it's the original Porsche (Moll) battery, you have done well with it. 4-5 years is normally the best you can expect from them. If you have a hydrometer, check the SG of each cell. Have you checked the levels? One cell dry, perhaps?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, it says MOLL Kamina on the top, I'm pretty sure it's the original. 7 years and 42k miles out of it, not bad!! Nope, don't have anything like this, sorry! It's showing as fully charged now (after approx 5 hours), I'll see how it is in the morning - I have a mate on standby for a lift to work if required, and I'll pop and get a new battery at lunchtime; easy enough to fit myself, yeah, just looks like a bolt either side holding it in? Hope it is just the battery and nothing more serious...

POST 6Original post

Worth checking the electrolyte levels though. When you change the battery, turn the ignotion on (but don't start the car), and switch off as many loads as you can (aircon, radio, etc) before you disconnect the negative terminal. This stops the alarm siren sounding. Leave the key in that position until after you have re-connected the battery.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ah, sorry I see now - so one of the cells might be dry and I might just need to top it up rather than get a new battery? Sorry I get you now! Good tip that, thank you! :thumb:

POST 8Original post

What should the SG be ? ive got a porsche battery was fitted new in Jan 2010 by Porsche and its failed allready, was draggin its ass on starting so replaced with a Varta F18 off good ol flea bay for 99 pounds delivered, 5 yrs warranty cant be bad.. so i have a dead or dyeing battery here, would like to confirm before i stroll into porsche, incase they are just all *****, looking at service history it had another battery in 2007 so life spans are 5 yrs, 3 yrs and 6 months.. pants eh !

POST 9Original post

If its 7 years old and has just been deep discharged, I'd change it anyway. You might get another few months out of it but sods law says when it gives up next you will be away from home and your charger and it will be a nause. I put in a Halfords HCB096 which came with a four year guarantee and saved myself a lot of hassle.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Still won't start this morning. Battery fully charged, all electrics work (as they did yesterday) so interior lights, radio, air-con, lights etc. will come on no problem, but when I try to start the car it just seems to lock / unlock the doors really quickly and drop / lift both windows over and over. Strange. :dont know: I will pop and get a new battery anyway (maybe there is enough charge to power everything but not to start it?), but is there anything else I can check? And does anyone know any good auto-electricians in the Manchester area...?

POST 11Original post

I had the same problem last Tue 20th. Out of nowhere after driving somewhere in the pouring rain with a lot of surface water, I stopped the car and then suddenly it just wouldnt restart and the passenger window started going up and down continuously. I managed to restart the car and get home. Since then the car has behaved normally, with the exception that the key fob no longer opens the car remotely? Central locking works fine within the car from the dashboard switch but the key does not. I've changed the battery in the key fob to no effect. I'm going to check the battery shortly as ppl on here are suggesting but to be honest I cant see that being the problem as the voltage appears fine and the car starts at first turn. I can only assume that this is some sort of electrical/water issue or short circuit somewhere? I'll let you know how I get on with the battery checks... Failing that I'm off to the auto-electricians.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Picked up a new battery from OPC Wilmslow (£177; Halfords Bosch equivalent was £130 but they had none in stock), fitted this afternoon and seems to work a treat - problem (hopefully) solved. Thanks for all the input (especially Richard re: leaving ignition on throughout - meant I didn't even need to re-enter the radio code). :thumb:

POST 14Original post

Well done, but in a 2003 car you don't have a user-entry radio code!!
