I just replaced my stock tips with a set I picked up from another Planet 9 patron (thanks!), so I'm very familiar with this little project.

I took some flexible sanding tape and smoothed the pipe really well before installing the new tip, took my time to get it aligned just right, and then tightened the clamp.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi all, looking at getting the sports tip for my Gen 2 Cayman and want to remove the old one.. I've had a look under the car and there appears to be a clamp but it has a weld spot on the clamp. Is there a simple thing I am missing here in order to remove the factory tip? Any help appreciated, Thanks

POST 2Original post

There's a nut and bolt on that clamp. The "weld spot" is probably the head of the bolt. There is a Y pipe that connects the two mufflers and then the tip is held tight with the clamp shown below. You loosen the nut with a wrench or socket and slide the tip off (which may take some wiggling).

POST 4Original post

Spray WD40 into the exhaust , near the joint, first. It'll make the old tip much easier to remove.

POST 5Original post

Actually the "weld spot" IS a weld spot! I just replaced my stock tips with a set I picked up from another Planet 9 patron (thanks!), so I'm very familiar with this little project. The clamp is spot welded to the tips, keeps them aligned and all together, and the aftermarket tips come with their own clamp so its no real problem. Had the replacement tip not had a clamp, I was prepared to use my Dremel tool to cut through the spot weld so I could re-use the old clamp. I suggest using PB Blaster , spraying it liberally over the nut/bolt of the clamp, letting it sit for 30 minutes or so, then spraying again before trying to remove the nut. I ended up using my air wrench to break mine loose, but lacking that you could use a 1/2" breaker bar, most likely. If the car has many miles on it, and especially if it has seen winter driving, the tips are probably rusted to the pipe, and will require a bit of force to remove. I took a small piece of wood from a 1X4 and wedged it under the clamp once it was loosened and pulled back a bit, then hammered the wood to move the tips some. Twist, pull, hammer some more, and eventually they come off. I took some flexible sanding tape and smoothed the pipe really well before installing the new tip, took my time to get it aligned just right, and then tightened the clamp. Pic enclosed for your inspection.

POST 6Original post

Which tips are those, mitch48? They are good looking!

POST 7Original post

The Agency Power tips. Yeah, I thought they looked good too. thanks for the compliment.

POST 8Original post

Remember folks, the original poster has a Gen. II Cayman and the exhaust clamp setup is a completely different design than the 2006-2008 I think.

POST 9Original post

On a GenII Cayman S there is no "Y connection " like in the GenI. I believe there is to separate pipes.

POST 10Original post

Someone needs to post a photo from a Gen II underbelly!
