Changed the drop links, then the top mounts and the anti-roll bar bushings all the cheap stuff.

What were the symptoms that led to having the steering rack changed, by the way?

Almost all of the rattle has been eliminated, I suspect I have wear in the front fork arms so I will replace these next month. Those are the ones that take up the forward force, so you can tell when you go over speed bumps etc.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The inner trackrods ( in the rubber gaiter)were packed with grease and this cured it for around 10 minuites.
Just had a new rack, inner and outer control arms replaced! The jangling bucket of bolts that was the front end is now a taught and quiet thing, except for the front control arms that need changed ( next month I feel!) as they still rattle a little.
A new geo ( factory settings) has made an amazing difference to the handling, she feels really planted in the twisty stuff.
One little niggle though, when I turn the wheel there is a low pitch squeak coming from around the passenger side of the dash. It could be coming through from another source but its as you turn the wheel.
Any thoughts

Sorry, I don't have a clue what the squeak is.
What were the symptoms that led to having the steering rack changed, by the way? I have an occasional annoying 'click' from the front end at about 3/4 lock when manouvering.
Well its a long story, are you sitting comfortably.
A front end rattle started around eighteen months ago. I went through the usual culprits.
Changed the drop links, then the top mounts and the anti-roll bar bushings all the cheap stuff.

So it was apparant that it was in the rack area.
As it was just an irritation and not a safety issue I ran it until I could fully determine the locatio of the rattle from within the assembly. I cover around 1200miles a month so plenty of opportunity.
As the months went on it got worse. With the car stationary if you grabbed the front alloy and rocked the car along the axle line you could detect the knocking.
By this month the steering rack was whining and sounded like a bucket of bolts so I had a new rack fitted, inner and outer track rods gaiters etc and a full GEO.A new car!
Almost all of the rattle has been eliminated, I suspect I have wear in the front fork arms so I will replace these next month. Those are the ones that take up the forward force, so you can tell when you go over speed bumps etc. Now that I have eliminated most other areas it really only leaves these guys or loose brake pads as the probable culprit but I think the former.
So the slight squeak when you rotate the steering well may be a lubrication thing.
I am waiting for a response from my Indie on the matter, they are always pretty spot on!
Hope my tale helps a little

I would wait until you have had the lower arms done as they are a likely cause.

Remove the 3 plastic covers under the boot (that cover the battery and A/C pipes etc), you will see the suspension top turrets, they have a Black 3" round plastic cap on either leg. Pop these caps out, put your ear close to the hole and get someone to turn the steering wheel while you listen out for the squeak. If you can pin point the noise to the top of the shocks replace the top bush and bearings.
Richard may be able to post up the PDF exploded diagram to give you more of an idea.
