I like it because: 1) it has a stock look, 2) voice prompts (I use the GB female voice), 3) it's quick to program and easy to use, 4) can play a single CD in dash and control the changer.

I can install pretty much the whole of the North East (NY/NJ/CT/MA) on the chip, once you install the data on your hard drive you can be very specific as to which zones you download: you just point and click, so you would only have to adjust the settings if you went on a long driving vacation out of your usual region.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any suggestions for an after-market navigation system for the C2? I'm open to the one Porsche offers as well, but I don't know anything about it. I'm a bit leery of the Alpine unit with the motorized display. Is there one that fits below the head unit (where the CD storage slots are)?

POST 2Original post

Jim I just had the TrafficPro installed in my 01 C2 Cab. I quite like it although some may not because there is no map display, but it doesn't bother me (don't really have a need for it). I like it because: 1) it has a stock look, 2) voice prompts (I use the GB female voice), 3) it's quick to program and easy to use, 4) can play a single CD in dash and control the changer. I first used a TrafficPro in Germany and was amazed that it took us to my wife's tiny village that isn't on most maps these days! I considered the Alpine setup but this meant changing everything.

POST 3Original post

Now that Gert doesn't handle the Traffic Pro anymore where is best place to buy that includes proper cD and antenna?

POST 4Original post

[quote]Originally posted by Don Watson: Now that Gert doesn't handle the Traffic Pro anymore where is best place to buy that includes proper cD and antenna?

The Traffic Pro comes with the CD. I bought my antennae from Horst at Becker.com As far as other units go, I had both the Alpine and the Kenwood in my C2 Cab, and although they worked just fine, it sort of didn't look quite right. I ended up getting the Traffic Pro (from Brumos $1365)and just love it. The voice commands do the job perfectly, and only occasionally do I look at the LED readout. Put the Kenwood in the Benz, where it seems it is more suitable(who is going to watch TV or a DVD while driving a Porsche anyway).

POST 5Original post

Have you given any thought to the independent GPS units? They are pretty good, plus they are tranferrable from car to car. I'm thinking of getting one since I only take the C4S to work or to the track, and I take the family bus (minivan) for long distance hauling of the family.

POST 6Original post

My son has one he mounts on the wheel of any airplane he flies. Does someone like Garmin make a portable that's easy to mount in a car?? And would it have the same programmable features/voice etc.?

POST 7Original post

The last research I did was almost half a year ago, Don. At that time, Garmin DID have a unit that is easily car mountable on the dash but still easily removable. It was also easily programmable. I did not find one that has voice prompts, but have heard via word of mouth that there are now units that are voice promptable. Coincidentaly, the reason I got interested is that I have a brother-in-law who is an aviator, and I ordered one for him 6 months ago. It might even be the same one your son has. I have another brother-in-law who married into a fishing magnate family, and he bought about a hundred marine GPS units for the fleet. Talk about bells and whistles!!! These units had everything, and the cheapest unit was 10 grand! Anyway, I'll start some research again, and let you know. This time, I might actually buy one.

POST 8Original post

The marine ones are cool. My buddy has one in his boat. Can zoom from right in Cape Cod Bay out to entire North America. Also has feature for line tracking previous positions, so when you're making your way back thru shallow waters you can just follow the course line the GPS made on your outbound trip. Really cool stuff!

POST 9Original post

Here's the latest Garmin automotive GPS system. Sounds pretty cool...but no voice prompts, just beeps. Pretty nice for a portable. http://www.garmin.com/products/gps5/ Garmin webpage

POST 10Original post

Here's the Garmin with voice prompts. It doesn't have the WAAS capability, but most don't, anyway. Street Pilot

POST 11Original post

Strange Paulting, the one I posted above your post has WAAS, but no voice prompts...and it's supposedly the latest one.

POST 12Original post

I think the GarminV is directed towards a different group of buyers. Some people want precise locations in the wilderness, some people just want to be told if they should turn right or left at the next intersection. Amazingly, that makes the Street Pilot cost more than twice the Garmin V . Still a savings from the built-ins, though.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm also going to look at some of the navigation options for the Compaq iPaq. They come with vent mounts, car power adapters, etc. and include voice prompting and nice maps.

POST 14Original post

Jim, can you post a link to that, or let us know what your research finds out? thanks,

POST 15Original post

I got my TrafficPro from SunCoast Porsche. The package included the TrafficPro, antenna and the Navigation CDs (2 disc, East/West USA).

POST 16Original post

FWIW I've got PCM and I usually (95%) find the voice prompts irritating. I use this little unit for hiking and biking, etc. IMHO it's about all you'll need.

POST 17Original post

Yeah I have a Garmin hand held GPS, but it's no good for driving since there is no street navigation. I remember using it in Hannover Germany, the address we wanted was just a 200 meters from our location but there were railway tracks in between and no obvious way to get there! The handheld units generally have a small memory (or require an additional memory card, also not large). You've got to download map sections to them via your computer and the coverage is limited depending on the amount of detail. I don't know about the voice with PCM, but I don't mind the TrafficPro voice (selectable), beats looking a a map and safer too.

POST 18Original post

Enough chit chat . I just decided to order this sucker. Full color, 128 meg data card, route calculations, voice prompts, detailed maps, data CD's, etc. Should be here in 2 days. I'll let you know. Hey, just noticed as I was reviewing the post. 10 minutes to go 145 miles???? Must be 145 feet.

POST 19Original post

I have an extra traffic pro with everyhting including antenna for $1350.00 Will also include instructions and tips for self installation (very easy)

POST 20Original post

Dranon, Is your unit new? Includes everything...I don't need to get any extra parts? Regards, Dan

POST 21Original post

Dranon, I am also interested in getting a TrafficPro. Let me know.

POST 22Original post

Paulting...have you figured out how/where you're going to mount the GPS III on your Pcar?

POST 23Original post

Palting, I have the Garmin Street Pilot III you ordered, had it about two months and as you said it easily shifts from car to car. The quirk is that you have to decide which regions of the US you want installed, download those to your PC from the CD rom and transfer the data to a chip that is inserted in the GPS. It works great and is easy to use.

POST 25Original post

I can install pretty much the whole of the North East (NY/NJ/CT/MA) on the chip, once you install the data on your hard drive you can be very specific as to which zones you download: you just point and click, so you would only have to adjust the settings if you went on a long driving vacation out of your usual region. The unit attachs to a bean bag type cushion that sits on the dash, it is very stable and just lifts out. Under very fast acceleration it may move around a little. If you want a more permanent solution you can attach a base to the dash with adhesive but i dont think you would want to do that in a nice car!
