Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

But the fact that I didn't see any at all made me think it's still not that bad yet.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So as I was driving last night I heard a weird noise all off a sudden, stopped right away and it ended up being the inner part of the driver side rear tire coming apart at about 125km/h. I peeled some of the long tire strip off by pulling it and cotinued to drive slowly to the hotel while its flapping away in the back. Drove very slow. Now I'm about to tackle my first Porsche spare tire change. Then drive on it back to Ottawa lol. sorry for mistakes I am on a BB

POST 3Original post

I missed your calls. I had a few problems at work to fix. Glad to hear you picked up the wheel and tire.

I'll post pics tomorrow!! Man, Louis, you saved me a heck of a lot of trouble!! I dropped the wheel off beside your house early in the morning. I couldn't possibly imagine driving back to Ottawa on a tiny little spare! I'll give you a shout tomorrow via phone!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here are two pics of the tire damage. Ya they were worn, but at no point should they have stripped off like a semi truck.... I was going to replace them next week, but My order to TireRack will be made this morning! Initially when it happened, it sounded similar to the IMS noise, the rubber strip was just flapping iinside the wheel well, i quickly focused on where I should pull over and shut my engine off asap. That's when I noticed the noise was still present and figured out it was something tire related. I never lost tire pressure even though this happened... I wish I had a knife with me to have cut the loose strips closer to the tire, but i ripped it off with my hand as best as possible. Drove about 10km/h with it still flapping back to the hotel and dealt with it in the morning. I called a member from this board and he pulled through with a very helpful act. Somehow miraclulously he had a extra rim/tire in his garage. So instead of me putting the spare on and picking it up, my uncle picked it up for me. Once in Ottawa (next day) I put my spare on and headed back to Montreal to return the rim/tire. Must of been a defect or I must of hit something very very sharp, but I didn't see anything on the road, nor was I speeding.

POST 7Original post

had almost the same thing with my E39, rear inner tire wear. did not notice until i was at an angle below the car. also thought i hit something on the road. looks like the inner side of the tire was below wear bar.

POST 12Original post

wow... I would have expected older.... glad you are OK, that can be dangerous to rims and worse

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I knew they were worn out, but I couldn't even see metal cords or nothing so I knew they would still last for bit. Like I said I didn't loose any air pressure at all, so I think the rim should be fine. Just all that flapping in the wheel well at the time scared the S*** out of me! I really thought the engine went for some reason. Anyways, just waiting on Damon from TireRack to reach work and set up my order.... Time difference from here to there I guess... Wonder how long shipping will take as I refuse to drive the car with a Orange spare.

Will do, for sure!

POST 16Original post

Sorry to hear of your incident.. but glad to hear of the help you got. But lets look at the tire. . Completely worn down beyond the wear bar indicators on the "inside" or wear side. Sure, it could have been cut on something (and it wouldn't have taken much) or it just failed due to being worn through, plus the heat/pressure of highways speeds etc. I wouldn't worry about the man. date (only 4 years old). I would confirm that alignment is within spec and I would take note of how many miles you got on the tire so you won't be caught out again. As for your spare, I can't recall if these cars come with a air compressor or not.. If NOT, I would recommend checking the spare tire inflation level periodically.. No point in having a spare that's also flat!

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7802707

Ya they come with a compressor which inflates it automatically.. a full inflated spare could never fit in this car. I know if was worn, but that happening is still out there... Shouldn't have happened. I'm waiting on the news tires to come in and a full install and alignment will be done for sure. I knew very well how much life/condition they had. Anyways, old news now...

Not sure how you can say it "shouldn't have happened" .. I think what you should consider thinking is "thank god it didn't completely fail and send me into other traffic or a guardrail". The tire was not safe to travel on to begin with. You risked it and it failed. Luckily no one was physically hurt and lessons can be learned. its a challenge on these super wide steamroller tires to check the wear. you can hardly see the inside grooves and that is where it seems 80% of the tire wear occurs.. on the inner 2-3 inches. The outer 7-11inches are just for show! A friend of mine had a similar failure on his 964Turbo. He was running 285s or 295s and just didn't realize how much abuse that part of the tire received.. not only from rolling in a straight line, but also from cornering forces pulling on that part of the tire/shoulder.

POST 19Original post

When you go below the wear bars you have 2/32 of rubber left before air loss. If you are waiting until you see 'cords' you are an accident waiting to happen. 125kph?? Your very, very lucky - you could have totaled your car or involved other people. What do you call 125 in a 100 then? Just saying. I agree with racer - your alignment is off. Montreal is the last place I would drive on tires in this condition. Hell, Kandahar other then IED's is about par with Montreal roads!

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ya you guys are right!! i'm not argueing the point here. I agree they should have been changed and I wasn't waiting to see cords either. But the fact that I didn't see any at all made me think it's still not that bad yet. Regardless, I would have changed them this week, which i'm doing now anyways. Lesson learned, and I have to agree that MTL has the worst roads ever, Ottawa as well !!

POST 21Original post

LOL...Ottawa is like paved gold compared to Fort McMurray!! but yes...driving from Ottawa to Montreal...that highway...is BRUTAL!
