Being an ex-TVR man I fancied a bit of a change but don't know the model ranges too well.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

968 was an evolution of the 944 and was built between 92-95, it features a similar 3.0ltr straight 4 16v as the 944S2 but had a bit more go at 240bhp and 225lb/ft 0-60 6secs, 150mph obviously there will be debate about which is the better car for the money, but by most accounts the 968 is no worse than a 944S2, it should be pricier simply because its a later built model, tho a concours 944 will obviously be better than a shabby 968, the late 944 turbo is the quickest of the lot tho (250bhp) and can be easily chipped for more power if thats what youre after i bought my 94 968 Sport last month and so far have thoroughly enjoyed it, i always thought my previous corrado had a great chassis and steering feel but this is obviously another league, only let downs with it are a few minor niggles still to be sorted under the garantee and the fact that its underpowered for the chassis and 255 rear tyres and the engines slightly disapointing engine note if youre coming from a TVR this will be a let down, tho the handling balance and steering feel are wonderful and make up for it

POST 2Original post

Remember to check out the 944 buying guide that Dr Alex did. Should be in the Porsche section somewhere. For general 968 and 968CS info, also do a search in these forums with the appropriate keywords. Much has been said within the last 6 months... Hope you find Porsche ownership rewarding and fun. It's not all about being a yuppie or a hairdresser, despite what the TVR crew think

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info guys. I have read the 944 buyers guide. It was the 968 that I was a bit lacking on. One more question: Are the sport and the club sport one in the same ? I've seen them advertised under both headings.

POST 4Original post

the sport is uk only and was produced 94-95 i think, supposed to be inbetween the luxury spec coupe and the CS, apparently has the quicker steering rack, brakes and suspension of a 'standard' CS but with electric windows, c/locking and half the soundproofing put back so all in its 30kg heavier than a CS the optional M030 pack on CS's gives it an LSD, bigger brakes and stiffer adjustable suspension and this is the one to have as far as track cars go stuff like electric seats, rear wipers, leather and aircon are still missing on the Sport tho and for me its a good balance as a road car tho i havent tried a proper full spec CS

POST 5Original post

I have seen a Sport with electric seats and rear bench seats (I'm positive), and presumed the buckets and bare bench were the sole preserve of the CS... is this correct? Anyway, from my perspective, it is the CS that has reached cult status and will retain its value better. There's no point breaking only half the eggs to make the omelette... Go the whole hog and get the CS, if it has M030 then so much the better. These will be the gilt edged investments IMHO. Espesh in speed yellow.

POST 6Original post

my sport has the standard cloth seats, the pointless seats at the back and has the RS steering wheel (lovely ) and no aircon, hardly saying its a stripped out racer but for my intentions for the car (fun road car which might try a trackday) its fine, if the CS had a big weight advantage as the 964/993 RS's do then fair enough but for me 30kg less on a 1350kg car isnt a huge bonus, as far as soundproofing goes, again if it had a flat six id be inclined to want to hear more of it but the 968's 4 is hardly sonorous is it? ive yet to see a definite spec comparison between 'standard' (non M030) CS's and the UK Sports, im sure ive read somewhere that the steering rack, brakes and suspension are the same which means the only advantage are the tighter bucket recaros and 30kg less, not a huge difference for me personally, tho as i have mentioned an M030 CS would make a far bigger difference agree that the M030 CS is the one to have, just arguing my case against the opinion that if it hasnt got the CS badge its somehow less worthy >> Edited by CoupeMan on Thursday 8th May 19:05

POST 7Original post

Agreed, not less worthy - just less of a cult car in terms of future residuals. If you never come to sell, this never becomes an issue and the ownership experience may be better suited for you anyway. As much as I love RSs and CSs, electric windows have their place

POST 8Original post

As such, the LSD was not included in the M030 since it was an option itself coded M220. Although most cars with M030 will feature the LSD I have seen some CS with M220 but without M030 (aka 944 turbo 250bhp) As far as the colour is concerned I would definitely go for a white one with colour-coded wheels. IMO track-wannabee Porsches have to be Grand Prix white >> Edited by Thom on Friday 9th May 11:07

POST 9Original post

Coupeman i saw your post on another forum ref small weight saving of 30kg of a CS over Sport...As i said i find this minimal...check this link; www.porsche964.nl/docs/gt-0203-c6.jpg this is an extract from a recent GT purely Porsche write up on a 968 CS,,,they infer that the weight saving is 80kg over a sport. This in the real world would be useful as it is the equivalent of a 12 stone passenger. I only read the article so don't actually know if it is gospel, but with the difficulty in tuning the 968 engine, surely this is the way to go...12 stone = XXbhp? They still seem like lard arses these 968CS coming in at 1320kg......my previous 1989 911 CS weighed 1160kg. >> Edited by clubsport on Saturday 10th May 10:58

POST 10Original post

yes 80kg is definitely more like it, but ive seen at least 2 or 3 sources that say 30kg difference, either way if youre happy to do without the electrics than whatever the weight saving is its only going to be an improvement BTW following on from my 1st intentional oversteer moment post on the EVO forum i had my 1st proper UNINTENTIONAL oversteer moment today, was frustrated with traffic for an hour so the red mist took over and i was looking for every opportunity for some full throttle, cue an empty mini roundabout where im turning right, 1st gear and it came round very quickly, managed to catch it with lots of arm flapping and just missed the inside kerb but there were a few pedestrians looking shocked/amused, probably would have looked good if i didnt have a look of fear on my face, live and learn

POST 11Original post

Seriously mate ...book a track day,,or go to some open ground with wide spaces to practice...don't see this as a dig,,,just to help you gain confidence with your first rwd car...You will be so hacked off if you ding an alloy and have to have the geometry reset,,,that is >£300 gone straight away! Glad you are enjoying it though!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can anyone give me a bit a low down on the specs (engine and performance) for the 968 and 968 CS ? I'm having trouble getting hold of this info. Being an ex-TVR man I fancied a bit of a change but don't know the model ranges too well. I thought they were all 911's and Boxsters . I was looking at a late model 944 but is seems for not much more - or if I'm prepared to go for a left hooker, almost the same price. I can get a 968. How do they compare ? I assume the 968 is a much more modern car altogether but I'm a bit worried about the fact that you can get 968's for less that some older 944's. Does this mean the 968 was a bit of a lemon as Porches go or are these 944's just overpriced ?
