Hi all.
I just got a message from the
TPMS
saying I need to inflate one of my
tires
(rear right).
I'm about to inflate it with the provided air compressor from the frunk, but I was just wondering if I needed to have the car running while using the air compressor (via the cigarette lighter port) or do I leave it off?
Thanks in advance!
Best to have the engine running so as not to discharge the
battery
.
Thanks for the quick reply, Trev450!
That's what I thought. It didn't mention anything in the manual (or on the air compressor itself) about turning on the engine, but for my previous cars I also had the engine running. Seeing as this is my first P-car, I just wanted to make sure.
if you have a jack use it.. it will go a lot faster..

Unfortunately I'm at my office and I don't have a jack with me.
How long does it usually take to add about 4 psi using the provided air compressor? Just wondering if I'll have enough time during my lunch break or would I just do it after work (don't want to get caught in the afternoon traffic jam...)
With that small compressor, it may take up to a minute or more to bring the pressure up 4 psi.
Be sure to check the other
tires
as well, it's likely they are down too.
Read somewhere it took someone 4 minutes with the provided air compressor to get to his 30 psi.
Yes, the rest of the wheels need more pressure too, but my rear right needs the most (and was the one that triggered the warning).
Will be doing it at my lunch break and most likely after work too, since the compressor says it can be used max 10 mins at a time.
I'm in Vancouver BC Canada, and the temperature just dropped almost 10 degrees celcius (so I'm guessing this also attributed to the drop in pressure in my
tires
?)
The
Porsche
compressor can't discharge that
battery
even with 4 hours continuous use. The compressor will pack up first. So don't worry about keeping the car running while inflating a tyre.
Well that was quick! Took less than a minute for each tire to inflate with the provided air compressor.
Checked out the dash for any
TPMS
messages and there were none.
Thanks for everyone's input!
IMO the inflation is faster with the engine ON.
Moot now, but it's faster with the car on because the voltage is slightly higher, but it doesn't really matter if the car's running or not. FYI to everyone else: make sure you use the cigarette lighter and NOT the accessory port because it'll blow the accessory port fuse. How long it takes depends on how flat the tire is; only takes a minute or two, but can take a little longer if it's gone full flat. No need to jack it up, it's just as fast with weight on the tire. Also, be mindful of how warm the
tires
are when you check pressure, as
tires
gain heat (and pressure) as you drive, and warm
tires
will have higher pressures than cold.
Just for grins, and because I don't have the smoking package, there are 3 other 12V outlets in my 981: one in the armrest, one in the passenger well, and one in the glove box. Are any of those appropriate for use with the compressor for inflating tires?
if it's the same as at 987 - then passenger well's one you shouldn't use.
but it's better you read the manual - the info is there for sure.
I'd check your right rear tire for a small nail/screw in it. Just a precaution. Might be a slow leak.
