Of you are buying Function First then they now also do the same OE gearbox mounts filled with poly.

On my first one I had RS engine mounts (gearbox mounts) and on my second one I fitted homemade 85a poly mounts.

I swapped the 964RS for DesignTek mounts, there was a massive improvement in NVH.

First set where 100A grade they were replaced with the green 60A sold by tarett Engineering, a much better solution for both road and track imo.

Everything feels much more 'dialled in' and immediate than before - most noticeable in change of direction, cornering, turn in, engine response and gear change.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. I'm planning some suspension work to my PASM 987.2 CS in the near future - had an alignment done at CG earlier in the year and they suggested a couple of things to refresh. Plans at the moment...
New dampers (Bilstein B4 Damptronic)
New front lower control arms
DSC Controller
Was considering replacing/upgrading mounts while at it to tighten things up a bit (car is 2011 with 46k miles). I wondered what experiences others have had with upgrading either engine or gearbox mounts, what products used and how it did it effect handling and NVH?
Thanks in advance

On my first one I had RS engine mounts (gearbox mounts) and on my second one I fitted homemade 85a poly mounts. The homemade ones are actually better in my opinion and provide the same benefits with fewer drawbacks (nvh)
Interested in this also. My car is due in for LWFW and LSD so whilst they're in there it would make sense to do it at same time if it's worthwhile. I'm conscious the LWFW my result in there being slight more mechanical noise and poss marginally more vibration. I'm fine with this as I want a racy drivers car for weekends etc. Just want to be sure that semi solid mounts don't ruin things..Quite a mixed bag of feed back put there..
As per OP question which brand strike the right balance of improved feel without too much NVH? Engine or Gearbox or both?
Rennline do tunable ones with 3 sets inserts.
Would be my choice.
Along with the function 1st mount in yellow.
To the op I would go R shocks if buying new.
Over dsc and new oem PASM.
The 987''s look like rally cross cars and the R setup works a dream for a fun car plus looks great as a lower.

Done both on a GT3 997, engine mount RSS, works well reduces the secondary movement when Corning hard well worth doing on the rear engine Porsche. The gear box mounts do similar but a diminishing improvement due to position within the car.Down side, none as far as I'm concerned with upgrade engine mount, but the gearbox mounts incurred a lot of noise and vibration into the cabin. First set where 100A grade they were replaced with the green 60A sold by tarett Engineering, a much better solution for both road and track imo.
I also have 85 shore poly filled original gearbox mounts. The PU is only on the side replacing the hydraulic fluid and not around the stud the other side. You could stiffen it up even more if you wanted by filing around the stud or of course by a harder PU.

I was running the 964RS ones and found them a bit harsh. Using the DesignTek one's now and they are a revelation.
Is that engine or gearbox mounts?
The gearbox mounts. Bought them here, I said they were for a 987 and the packet they came in said it also, I think maybe there are different versions. Worth checking if you go down this route.

Ok so sounds like RSS semi solid engine mounts coupled with a function first yellow gearbox mount insert would be a good combo if I'm reading this right?
Would stiffen things up giving a more connected/taut feel without being too stiff with big excess NVH? I can expect a small amount more noise but not too much for a fast road weekend toy..?
I can get the RSS mounts from design911 but looks like function first needs to come from the U.S?
Thanks for any advise.
PS. Apologies OP for the thread hijack but hopefully relevant
Of you are buying Function First then they now also do the same OE gearbox mounts filled with poly. But knowing how cheap and DIYable these are I coukdn't bring myself to spend that money.
For the front I'm running these Powerflex inserts.
https://www.srbpower.com/products/powerflex-pfr57-...
They are another option, very easy to install.
Running the RSS ones on my Cayman R and they make a nice difference.
No noticeable increase in NVH that i have found, but do tighten the previously unnoticeable slack in the transmission. You feel the car react faster and tighter to changes in throttle application and the whole car feels tighter when cornering.
I'm yet to upgrade the front engine mount with some inserts. I've got a new unfitted set of FF black mounts but i think they will be too harsh for road use, so i think i'll go either Powerflex yellow or FF yellow.
I used the 964 RS style Engine mounts as transmission mounts in my 986 Boxster, along with a 987 style front engine mount.
It made a big difference and was definitely worth it - only cost about £150 I recall (for the pattern part RS style mounts and bolts/washers).
Exactly as above - made the throttle response more urgent, improved the gearchange and controlled the mass behind you - felt a lot sharper. It was 'mildly' noticeable in the cabin in terms of NVH, but a reasonable compromise I thought.
Thanks for the input all - very much appreciated.
I must admit, it gets confusing with the engine and gearbox mounts, the terms (and parts?) seem to be used interchangeably (or maybe I'm misunderstanding).
Does the consensus for Cayman/Boxsters seem to be go for the gearbox mounts upgrade - something like the below?
Design Tek
https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod141475/Performa...
RSS
https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod138612/Perfroma...
Any further thoughts on which are better, or much the same?
The terms are used interchangeably as the same round donut shaped mounts which fit as 911 engine mounts also fit as 986/987 gearbox mounts. The 986/987 engine mount is a bush like an old 35mm camera tub in a large metal bracket/mounting.
I've ordered the yellow FF insert for the front mount, ( but thinking I should perhaps have gone for powerflex if it's a comparable product at z much cheaper price ).
I think I'm going to order 964 RS mounts instead of RSS as sounds like they do a similar job at less than half the money, ( and poss very slightly less stiff ? )
To put it out there, i have a set of lightly used WEVO semi solid mounts in the garage.
They needs the bolts/washers but feel free to drop me a mail if you're interested.

Ok thanks but unfortunately I've just ordered the 964RS version. Balls!
So to summarise this thread it appears you want Design Tek mounts and a powerflex yellow insert for the right combo at best price?
I now have 964RS mounts and FF yellow insert on order...Fingers crossed I'm not disappointed
There's plenty of user experience posted here. Pick your choice. It's not like anybody here has tried all of the different versions. You could count up the most recommended option or the one the that most seems similar to your own car.
I'm not saying DesignTek over Wevo, RSS, or any of the other similar style mounts as i've not tried them but from my experience I am saying DesignTek over 964RS. I've got a different engine (V6) so the NVH on my 964RS mounts might be worse/different than others get. I really didn't get on with them, was ready to go back to standard. At about 1500rpm it felt like the engine/box was going to jump out of the car, with the DesignTek it's still taught but butter smooth now, I couldn't believe the difference. Looking at them I felt there was a reasonable chance they would be harsher as there is less rubber, glad they weren't as it's a lot of money if you aren't happy with the results.
Well, it took longer than expected (a house move and baby got in the way!) but a year on and I decided to go ahead and purchase some 'upgraded' new transmission mounts.
After some deliberation and research (including on here, thank you to those that contributed) I went for the 964/993 RS engine mounts via Type911
https://type911shop.co.uk/epages/de867ca1-377e-432...
, chosen, to be honest, mostly based on their good price vs other semi-solid options and feedback from other forums where it seemed most found the NVH levels to be not too bad.
I only had them fitted this afternoon by the guys at 9e but can share some initial impressions...
On starting up the car from the garage.. quite a lot of vibration through the seat and wheel and some gruffness/added texture to the usually smooth flat6. First NVH impressions.. not great, more than I had anticipated. Engine/exhaust note has also become louder (my car has PSE). Starting to wonder if I'd made the right decision.
I took the car home, only a few miles from 9e, as had to baby sit for an hour or so while the OH went out. No real chance to form any further impressions on the way home. OH came back and pm rush hour traffic had died down so went for a proper drive.
Starting the car up again, the NVH didn't seem quite so bad as first start up. Took the car for a few miles down the motorway to warm it up again and see what it was like cruising. It is definitely slightly noisier in the cabin and more NVH than with the standard mounts. I don't think it will be unbearable, particularly if the new mounts bed in further, it's currently borderline annoying/acceptable but I I need to spend a few more motorway miles to form a proper impression. Conclusions tbc on this side.
Fortunately there are some good B roads off the M23 so I soon came off and headed to some of my well known favourites. This is where I began to get a real feel for what the RS mounts bring in terms of positives. And they really are quite significant from what I've experienced so far. Everything feels much more 'dialled in' and immediate than before - most noticeable in change of direction, cornering, turn in, engine response and gear change. Gear change particularly. My car has factory SSK and the gear change is now seriously quick and easy to move through the box - a lot of the notchiness that it had before has been smoothed out. Going from gear to gear and downshifting feels excellent (as it felt when I first bought the car a few years ago, but had become a bit too notchy and required an extra bit of mental/physical effort to select gears over time). On the handling side, the car just feels like it would turn on a sixpence - it was good before (setup by CoG) but now great. Definitely feeling significantly faster through corners I know well than before.
During my enjoyment on the B roads, I stopped noticing much of the additional NVH, in fact the extra NVH / exhaust note added to the experience in a good way. I suppose an amount of extra rawness, which adds to the sensations of driving the car. I've probably made this 'review' far too long in an attempt to provide some description of the upgrade, but hope it comes in useful for anyone considering this option. I know I spent a considerable amount of time looking online when researching.
It's actually not completely conclusive at this early stage - I'd like to drive the car a lot more and further on different roads and over a good few miles to form a complete opinion, but if there's one test result I can point to so far, it's that I didn't want to come home (but unfortunately had to..!).
Cheers,
Tim
