Can anyone with a PCM system give any feedback as to how well the traffic congestion/mapping works (Los Angeles)? From what it sounds like, it gets the information from the radio somehow. How does that compare with what you get from say sigalert.com?
How well does it do in calculating routes? (i.e. are we talking mapquest or mappoint??)...
i dont think that this function works in the US.
i've read it somewhere before that this only works in Europe.
i live in Los Angeles too and the PCM sometimes go crazy when i was travelling at a local road along the freeway. it will still said that im travelling on the highway.
The real question is WHY doesnt it work. ClearChannel carries the right signals but you need a subscription. No one seems to know anything about this?
Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd ressurect this old one to see if anyone has further/updated info on whether traffic info can be displayed on the PCM NAV in the US.
TMC (Traffic Message Channel) is mentioned in the PCM update file:
Planet Porsche - Downloads - PCM Navigation Update TSB
TMC is what is used in the US. It's what my portable Garmin uses. It's sent over FM, piggy-backed on various FM radio stations. On my Garmin, I have to pay a fee to be able to use TMC information.
You can learn a bit about TMC here:
Traffic Message Channel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Given the mention of TMC in the above file, I wonder if PCM 2.1 has it built in, but with no way to activate it. It would be way cool if someone could find a way to activate it!
I just did some Google searches and found some more info on TMC and PCM2.1. It's in there, but I have no idea why it doesn't seem to work in the US. TMC is the same in Europe and the US.
