Suggestion

I can't imagine this wont be a warranty repair, so I would ask the dealer to replace the oil for the reason you stated of the engine being heated to higher than normal levels.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

I was wondering if anyone has had a belt break on their car. I was cruising around last night and my A/C stopped blowing cold air. Next a light came on that said, “Battery generator”, a few minutes later I noticed the steering wheel was hard to turn, then a light saying, “Engine to hot”. I pulled over and steam was coming out to the passenger side intake. It took about 30 minutes for the car to cool down to 175. I had the car towed in and they think it was a belt. Should I be concerned about the oil or coolant since the car over heated?

POST 2Original post

Oil and coolent are cheap so why not be safe? First time that I've heard of a belt breaking.

POST 3Original post

Obviously your coolant will substantially be replaced since you probably lost a lot of it. I can't imagine this wont be a warranty repair, so I would ask the dealer to replace the oil for the reason you stated of the engine being heated to higher than normal levels. I would think they would agree if they weren't planning on it already. Good luck.

POST 4Original post

I am wondering if some type of road debris snuck up to either derail or snap your belt....

POST 5Original post

I would hope your engine doesn't suffer some long term effects from being overheated. I was co-owner of a shop about 15 years ago and saw problems crop up later in engines that were heated up. Things like head gaskets letting go 6 months later, valve guides loosing up, higher oil consumption. It was my experience that engines got "if'y" after being really heated up. It's best to shut down the second anything seems strange.

POST 6Original post

That would be extremely unlikely given the belt location just behind the front engine cover. More likely either a defective belt or it was over tightened at the factory.

POST 7Original post

Excessive heat could not be good for that engine, hopefully you didnt warp any of the engine or head castings .

POST 8Original post

Thanks for all of your input. I do not think anything caused it to break. I am guessing all the work will be done under warranty. The dealer has been great so far. They even gave me an 07 Cayman S for a loaner.

POST 9Original post

Agree with both of these comments. I burned the bearings on a '65 Spitfire engine, and 4 months after replacing the broken water pump, I threw a rod and destroyed the engine. Doesn't sound like you got it hot enough for long enough for this... Greg

POST 10Original post

when i turn my ac on, it sounds like a rocket... is this normal??

POST 11Original post

What was your water temp gauge reading when you got the "engine too hot" message?

POST 12Original post

It was 225ish in the middle of the red light. I was on the freeway so it took me a few minutes to find an exit to pull over.

POST 13Original post

225 (if accurate) is nothing to worry about. In my Corvette, the fan didn't turn on until 230.

POST 14Original post

Belt broke, because of faulty bearing, Cayman S 15 K miles Serpentine belt broke at only 15,000 miles. I have been very happy with my Cayman S until this. Reason was a faulty bearing. Any recomendation for an online shop to get good prices for parts?

POST 15Original post

Mine broke yesterday, and its the bearing failure's fault. My car only has 15,000 miles. As soon as I heard the overheat alarm I stopped in a minute as soon as I could find a place, there was a little smell of coolant, but no vapor. I really think Porsche put that hot temperature alarm before any damage is done to the engine or what would be the point.

POST 16Original post

That makes sense. Porsche would rather replace a belt or repair the cooling system BEFORE serious engine damage occurs. Porsche is well known for very good engineering. So far as I know, they are the only manufacturer to apologize for over engineering the 911 engine; after the 934s and 935s had won Lemans something like 7 out of 8 years. Then FIA changed the rules. Re: Belt broke, because of faulty bearing, Cayman S 15 K miles Several of our sponsors will carry the belt in stock, I'd start there. Sorry to hear it happened, where was the faulty bearing??

One of the bearings of the pulleys. I started searching for parts with the sponsors. Is there a sponsor that offer discount to forum members?
