Headers are everything, my 981 with PSE was decent sounding with PSE open, I fitted race headers and it was incredibly loud.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone
what is the cheapest and best way to make a 987 boxster sound much better?
my previous cars have had downpipes, ress deletes etc but the 987 is different
im after a nice growly startup / no drone / very loud and throaty under revs
thankyou
I've got my boxster booked in with this guy in January for exhaust mod. He's very reasonably priced and well reviewed. Bedfordshire way:
https://www.facebook.com/Paulscarwelding/
I’m in the same position: a 987.1 that needs an exhaust tweek. My three main options at the moment are the Carnewal, Hayward and Scott or PCW Exhausts (I believe these last two are pretty much identical mods). It’s so hard to get a good idea of what these sound like on YouTube clips. The Carnewal seems to be much more of a low down rumble, whereas the other two sound more raspy. I’m not interested in going for a full-on Fabspeed replacement - I’m not sure my insurance company would be that obliging!
Is there anyone out there in London or Herts who has had one of these done? I’d love to have a listen in the flesh. I’m in Islington but happy to travel a bit. Please PM me if you’re happy to give me a demo.
OP, apologies for hijacking your thread but this looked like the perfect place to post.
Just for awareness. Had a genuine Porsche PSE fitted to my 991.1, no performance enhancement. Told the insurance Co and expected a cheeky but unnecessary £50 premium hike. They gave 2 week notice of cancellation of cover as it was now modified!!!
Car is in countryside location, garaged with 2 named (senior) drivers with 12 yrs no claims, for context.
im also in herts area.
currently booked in for hayward and scott bypass as pcw didnt get back to me
what i want is alot louder start up, and more deeper sound
previous cars always had res deletes and DP's. im after something like that that doesn't cost crazy amounts

That’s what worries me. My 911 is insured through Locktons who don’t give a damn about mods - they understand us Porsche owners and, unless we’ve gone for a full-on stage 3 tune and 100bhp increase, are fine. Unfortunately the Boxster is with a boggo high street insurer who’ll probably see me as a high risk once I declare a modded exhaust.

I too left a message with PCW but he didn’t get back. I understand he’s a one-man band so he’s probably completely rammed at the moment. I may book in with H&S for the new year, although I know they’re really busy.
As far as I’ve heard PCW and H&S’s mod give a more raspy, high-end sound. Carnewal’s exhaust is much deeper.
Please do drop me a PM when you’ve had yours done. I’d love to have a listen. The YouTube clips just don’t give a good representation of the sound. My benchmark is can I drive through the Hatfield tunnel and make myself laugh! If I do then job done. I know race headers etc would give me amazing results but I want to keep everything as stock as possible.

Why would you feel the need to tell the insurance company about an OEM piece of equipment that it could have had straight from the manufacturer?

Any issues with the MOT? Must sound pretty special though.
im booked in 2 weeks, will update everyone of course
im in shefford so dont mind meeting up if anyone wants?
if it sounds anything like the the m240i i had (double res delete and 4.5 downpipe) ill be very very happy

Because it wouldn’t have been on the build spec sheet and I didn’t think it would affect premium anyway.
Any insurer that faces an expensive claim is going to look for a get out, I’ve dealt with loss adjusters before.
I suppose it's what you want and can live with, sound wise.
My 987.1 has PSE. I love it in standard form, a bit stealth and you can talk in the cabin, roof on or off. It still has that brilliant wail at higher RPM, (which in my opinion sounds better than with the PSE switched on).
PSE on and the whole system takes on a lower slightly louder growly note, (also remaps the bottom end to give more torque and throttle response).
I generally only use the PSE on track as for reasons above, the quieter standard mode is better.
Out of interest, noise levels at static trackside were, standard 90db, PSE on, 92db.

Was the PSE always switchable on the 987.1?

See full answer earlier up this thread. To paraphrase, even if it’s OEM it’s still a modification as the car wasn’t specced with it originally.
Mirinjawbro said:
what happens if the previous owner fitted it? you crashed and was unaware etc?
Not sure, it’s a massive grey area, none N spec tyres, short gear change kit, none OEM brake pads?
I was just being straight with my broker when I told them about PSE fitment. If the car had some rear end damage it would cost more to replace after all!
All I know is you don’t want to give them any excuse to wriggle out of paying a claim.
I’m now with Adrian Flux who seem to be set up to insure cars with mods.
When I was with Adrian flux I declared all the upgrades on my TVR. Upgrade from 4.5 L to 5.5 L, Wheels, brakes, suspension, roll bar, seats, et cetera et cetera and was pleased to have the premium increased by less than 100 quid!
The specialists - Mannings, Adrian Flux, Locktons etc. - are all great regarding mods. They understand their customer base and don’t just answer to a computer saying “No”.

Flux unfortunately are not very good when it comes to claims
They will try their hardest to get you to have a hire car at extortionate rates(through their subsidiary)
My nephew had terrible problems with them, despite not being at fault, and having “legal cover”

Seconded. I’d love to know. I’m holding off booking mine until I get an idea of what it sounds like.

Ignorance is no excuse. The insurer will simply say "well, you should have checked" and you'd have no leg to stand on. You should have checked.
Anyone who says "why tell my insurer" is trying to save money as they think the insurer will hike their premium. If an insurer believes there's a greater risk due to value, repair cost, performance, whatever, they'll increase the premium. So what's really happening in your mind at this point is that you're balancing the risk of a premium hike against the risk of not being paid out if you don't tell them.
Personally, I'd tell them about every modification away from the spec sheet. Even winter tyres, or a dash cam.

Absolutely! Tell them everything and then you have nothing to worry about if you need to claim. I even told my insurers about some decals I’d applied to one of my cars. It was noted and appeared each year in my policy.
update -
had the H & S bypass completed
its not as loud as i thought it would be. its definitely alot more "raspy" when giving it though.
the sound itself has changed most i would say rather than the volume
as a guess id say its around 1.5 x as loud overall.
i would ideally liked to of gone a bit louder but not sure what else can be done.

Thanks for the update. I guess for significant volume increase you need to go the route of changing the headers.
Do you prefer the new sound? You don’t sound too sure. From the YouTube vids I’ve watched the H&S mod does sound raspier, whereas the Carnewal mod definitely sounds more low down volume increase.

Certainly not what I would want for Track Days!
In my opinion, it sounds great as standard or with PSE switched on.
To be honest, I only use PSE on Track Days.
