Been hearing this rattle coming from the steering column for a while now, took it to the dealer to no success, they replaced the airbag (what for no idea), tightened everything and still I hear the rattle, it's more like a clicking sound when turning the wheel.
Any simalr experiences/how to repair?
I have a slight plasticy rattle in my steering column, almost a ticking sound. If I put pressure upwards on the wheel - it goes away. You got the same noise?
i have the same rattle and it drives me nuts! i spent about a 1/2hr and found the source
n the steering wheel where the airbag cover meets the silver plastic trim .next time you hear the rattle , apply pressure to the wheel in that spot and it will go away.
No so far only the Chrono on dashno matter the direction it is set in. Think it may have come out of a YUGO
I have a very odd noise in my steering column. When i turn the wheel it almost sounds like paper rubbing against plastic. It definitely isn't a rattle but it is some strange noise. What I am thinking is that it has something to do with my K40 radar detector. There are some wires in that area for lights just under the gauges. Probably a wire running from there down to the fuse panel area or under the steering column where the speaker is. I bought the car used so I have no idea how it is wired up. Any ideas??
I have this exact problem. I can hear this when turning the steering wheel at low speed. I tried adjusting the steering wheel up/down in/out with no success. The sound is low enough so that music at low/medium volume drowns it out, but still bothers me enough to seek possible fixes.
Anyone able to find out what the problem is and how to fix it?
My chrono rattles too. This has been reported by numerous members.
Yes - it may be the clockspring.
There is a cable that is spooled out and retracted as you turn the steering wheel which is how the airbag (and any controls if you have a multifunction wheel) is connected.
With my 986
Boxster S
I could hear the scraping clearly every time I turned the wheel left but not when I turned it right.
I haven't heard it to date in my 2008 CS so it's possible they changed mechanisms or that I just haven't noticed yet.
That having been said, I
do
have something in my steering column that rattles on roads with a rough top surface (like worn concrete) that I haven't been able to locate yet…
I have narrowed down the source of the noise to the airbag module. I disconnected the
battery
, popped the airbag out of the steering wheel. As I rotated the airbag module, it made the same noise that's been bugging me for the past few weeks. It sounds like sand/pebbles tumbling inside a plastic container.
I could only hear it with the radio off and the car moving very slowly or in a stationary position. As I turn the wheel click to click, I would hear the noise every single time.
I will be visiting my dealership tomorrow. I am hoping to get a replacement airbag as it is a safety issue. Whatever loose particle inside the airbag can potentially shoot out at my face with airbag deployment.
My steering wheel noise was confirmed to be from the airbag by the dealership.
Mine will be replaced next week once a new airbag arrives.
If any of you have noise from the steering wheel itself, have your airbag unit checked out.
I have the rattling Chrono. It rattles more when in the left position.
