I am very keen on a 2005 Boxster and reading various forums have discovered that in 2005 Porsche allegedly changed the IMS to a stronger non serviceable version mid 2005 which had a much lower failure rate.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I plan to enter the world of Porsche and whilst undertaking due diligence have learned quite a bit re the infamous IMS. I am very keen on a 2005 Boxster and reading various forums have discovered that in 2005 Porsche allegedly changed the IMS to a stronger non serviceable version mid 2005 which had a much lower failure rate. I also have see various claims that is identified via the engine number in that past a certain number point the engine is most likely to have the revised bearing. My question is there any truth to this from your experience. Based on the fact check my planned engine number is M9625AT61665342. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

I had a 2005 Boxster S delivered in September that year (so presumably built around August) with engine code M9626 which had the non-serviceable/upgraded IMS bearing.  I'm not sure exactly when they changed over - the engine code/number should identify the updated engine.  Have you tried contacting a Porsche service centre?

Hi mate I have the same and bought my car from Autohaus who gave me the below info. if you can't trust them, who can you trust? By the looks, yours does in fact have the later single row IMS bearing. The bearing is stronger and a single row larger bearing which can not be changed out as the opening is smaller than the bearing and the case needs to be split. Cheers Hi Frank Quote attached.  All parts are in stock. From your email, your car has engine number 615 057 85. My info is that engine numbers up to 615 047 15 can have their IMS bearing updated, which means that your car does indeed have the larger IMS bearing. Regards James

Hey Brent, further to Frank's response see below link (scary pics trigger warning)! https://autohaushamilton.com.au/news/ims-bearing-the-facts-made-simple The info you want from the above link is; 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 So it seems the car you are looking at does indeed have the stronger non-serviceable IMS bearing. Happy motoring!
