My advice, FWIW, use Joe Gibbs DT40 oil that is changed every 5k miles and beat on the prick like it owes you money.
Leading evidence: 'Replace every 5k miles and beat' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend 10k interval' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just replaced the starter and radiator but I expect it to our last the universe.

Suggestion
What is the acceptable amount of oil for these engines to consume in between the recommended 10k interval?

Any one recommend any Northeast shops that could potentially perform an engine swap?

Suggestion
With the digital oil gauge I do not feel comfortable letting it drop below the recommended level on the gauge.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a
2006 Cayman S
and recently hit the 100,000 mile mar, their is a Jesus.. I am currently in talks with a NJ shop to replace my engine.
Who else has experienced the magical 100k on their original engine? What was the mileage before an engine failure or engine refurbish?
If I were u, an engine replacement is such a serious cost, that if I were going to do it I would hunt for something with more power and torque. Might as well try to get something extra if u r going to pay all that money, even if it costs a little bit extra. Not sure what ur options would be. ..
I sure wouldn't replace an engine in a 10-11 year old car. The money required would make a pretty nice deposit on a brand new version where everything is new, not just a new engine. Engines in these cars are unbelievably expensive and in my book, not a good way to spend money. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Only 100,000 miles and you need a new engine??? Unless you have been racing the car throughout its nine years, this seems excessively premature to need to be done. It is very common for engines to last far past 100,000. I often tell people who have cars with that mileage that their car is finally broken in. If for whatever reason you actually do need a new engine, then I agree with Budman, that you are much better off spending your money on another car, if not for that reason, then because if the engine needs replacing, then so will the transmission, wheel bearing, steering, tie rods, etc., either now or at some time in the near future.
Yeah....that is way to early. Modern engines should be able to last for 200 - 300k miles. I'm up to 151k in my Lexus and zero issues - no oil usage, no weird sounds, just like the day I drove it off the lot. The Porsche engine should be more robust and I don't track it. I would be pissed if at 100k, I have to replace an engine.
My
06 Cayman S
had 145k miles on the engine when the
IMS bearing
went (I am one of the very, very few this has happened to.) Upon disassembly and inspection, the leakdown and compression were excellent, and thrust clearances at the low end of factory tolerances. My advice, FWIW, use Joe Gibbs DT40 oil that is changed every 5k miles and beat on the prick like it owes you money.
All great solid advice, thank you all.
I have possess many a vehicle that I have tortured and have given me many miles, my current daily driver has 225k and still kicking. Just replaced the starter and radiator but I expect it to our last the universe. Regular maintenance is the key.
This forum has freaked me out and made me paranoid about the
M97 engine
. I replace the oil in my CS every 3k to inspect it for issues and it seems fine. It just eats up a bit of oil. What is the acceptable amount of oil for these engines to consume in between the recommended 10k interval?
The only major issue I have had was the water pump I replaced and clutch. Upgraded the front rotors to a two piece and some Porsche pads all around. So far so good and I should remind my self that is just a car and to enjoy it. Not stressed and baby her. Thank you all.
The quote I have received are in the 18,000 average range before taxes. Anyone live in the Northeast that has utilized a shop they recommend to refurbish or replace the engine? How difficult is it to do a compression test on these engines? Besides the oil or separator what else should I upgrade to increase longevity?
If your engine hasn't given up on you, why replace the engine? On a decade+ old car? Have you looked into the
IMS
retrofit kit? You can have preventive maintenance for $2.5Kish. At $18K, I'd drive the car the way you're doing now till it runs to the ground instead of replacing the engine.
I agree, except I would not do any work on it it, only maintenance. Likely not to have any
IMS
issues. If you do then either buy an engine or buy a new car.
Cheers
Hmmm. Wasn't there a poll recently on
Cayman
odometer readings over 50K? My point being to keep doing to that engine what you've been doing for the first 100,000 miles, and it may last another 100,000 miles. Keep shifting ...
I am hoping to put 300k on my
981
Cayman S
before it needs major engine work. It's not an issue of expense, I just would not replace a Porsche engine with only 100k unless it was unrepairable. Using some oil in between oil changes is not a good reason in my opinion to give up on a Porsche.
Any one recommend any Northeast shops that could potentially perform an engine swap? I am referring to actual personal experiences and not what you have read online. First hand experimented please.
What is the average oil consumption observed in between the oil changes?
That's problem number one; believing the internet. Never believe anything negative on the internet is rule #1. Marketing research shows that people with a negative experience are more than 20 times more likely to say something about a product compared to people with a positive experience; that is when their name is attached to a response. When they are anonymous (i.e.. the internet), the number is even greater (I think is was 87 times IIRC). So relax a little. The actual IMS failure rate was somewhere around 1 or 2 %.
That depends on several factors. First being how full do you keep it? A flat six will normal allow oil to seep past the rangs into the cylinders every time the engine if off. Not a lot of oil, but it is an ongoing seeping issue that will cause your engine to burn a little every time you start. Most people don't ever see a puff of smoke, but some of us do occassionally and without any rhyme or reason as to when it does occur. Many people have found that their engine burns off a half quart or even a full quart right after an oil change, but then it stops burns oil and the engine goes 10,000 miles without burn another ounce. So stop topping off the oil every time that you are a half quart low.... Wait until you are 2 quarts low than add one quart and see if it drops again. Other factors to the oil burning issue include how long the car sits (overnight, a week, a month, all winter....), is the car level or parked on a slope? that will affect the oil seeping issue (either increase it or decrease it), Do you wait until the engine if fully warmed before revving past 3500 rpm? Lastly, oil weight and ambient temperature are also factors. If you are burning more than 2 quarts in 2000 miles, have a compression test performed on the engine before assuming that you need a rebuild.
Did you read your study on the Internet? lol
I agree that many sleepless nights of researching have made me realize that the percentage is very low for the
IMS
issues.
With the digital oil gauge I do not feel comfortable letting it drop below the recommended level on the gauge.
I have found a
987.2
I might purchase and trade in my current CS for it. But I have also queried a few shops about a 3.8 or 4.0 rebuild. Both end up being about the same price but I am still unsure about what directions to go for sure. I am leaning toards the purchase of a newer
987.2
due to the newer engine that oild better but those DFI motors also have a few issues.
But the issues I have found are easily rectified in my garage. What I have found is the RMS and carbon build up. Any other issues you all have experienced personally? If so how long and how much to alleviate the faults did it take you.
I'm confused. Did you actually experience an engine failure? If not, why would you replace your Porsche's engine at 100K miles? These motors are made for longevity; there's every reason to expect a
M97 motor
to go 200K+ miles without any serious mechanical issues (other than a clutch replacement) AS LONG AS THE
IMS BEARING
DOESN'T GO. Why shell out $18K to replace a perfectly good motor?
