Suggestion
Its much more cramped, I am 6ft 1 and only just fit kind of comfortably, if going for the PDK then it holds onto gears far longer than the 981 S therefore you'll need to use the paddles in all but traffic jams.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am soon looking at trading my M3 in for a 981 Cayman and just wondered as it would be my every day car would for the same budget a Cayman R be too extreme as an every day machine?
Steve
If you want a car that is tactile and full of feedback go for the R. If you prefer your creature comforts and like the more modern driver aids then the 981 would be more suitable. Ultimately, the R is perfectly ok for everyday use and will also depreciate far less than a 981.

you mean stickers are not extreme?
ok, it does have alu doors like a Gt3
stiffer rear ARB
10 HP more
std bucket seats
that's it.
Go and drive the 981. Take it from me - they are astounding cars. This latest generation of Boxster/Cayman is recognised by many as being "one of the world's best sportscars at any price".

IF you wan ta car which just feels like a GOlf ;-)
Even the GT4 is a easy to use car now(bar ground clearance) and rides like a dream, the newer normal cars are very dull imo hence why the OP need to work out what sort of drive he wants.

Given that the Golf R finished above a Renault Megane Trophy and McLaren 650s in the Evo 2014 COTY results, is that really so bad? You make it sound as if a decent ride and everyday useability is a bad thing. Colin Chapman might disagree.

Colin Chapman is rotating in is grave at 7200 rpm because you mentioned him in the same posting as the Golf R.

That seems like an image/brand thing. If Ford/Renault/Mazda/VW/Audi produce better drivers cars (occasionally) than BMW/Mercedes/Porsche then acknowledge it! It may be unpalatable to Porsche/lamborghini/Ferrari/Maserati - but it is (if the motoring press are at all to be believed) just so on occasion. Why shouldn't it be? VW group share info and there will be occasions when one part of the empire gets it right - and another gets it wrong.
Comparing the 2 cars on paper is pointless, stats and spec list do not reflect reality.
As said, go and drive them and see what you thnk. I find there is a huge difference just for example between my 986 and my R in terms of comfort and everyday drivability, driving the R down the bumpy country lanes at 6am is not very plesant, but the Boxster is much less jiggly.

yes I went to buy a Golf at the week end and had a 30 minute test drive it was so dull it was crazy, hence my winter hack will be a Megane CUP

I know what you mean. I had a Golf R as a courtesy car a little while ago and it was fun for about the first 20 miles and after that it had nothing more to offer. Nice winter hack by the way.
I agree, I think it's a generational thing too.
I picked up a few hundred quid snotter yesterday (1.8 Ford Focus) for my other half to drive whilst waiting for a new compnay car, its 15 years old. After 2 hours of driving it home I decided I actually enjoyed driving it more than I do her new A4, and i'm not saying this for effect, I genuinely did.
To be fair the 981 is not anywhere near as bad in the steering department as an Audi A4 - you still get something of worth from a new Porsche.

While I'm a big fan of the Megane, not sure of it as a winter hack - just when the lack of grip in slippy (wet/cold) conditions makes the 981 more playful and fun, it tends to make the Megane (or any powerful FWD car) unruly. Fancy diffs have moved the point at which this happens, but it still does intrude.
Having owned a CR and driven a 981 S a lot, I would say that the R is less of a daily driver. Its much more cramped, I am 6ft 1 and only just fit kind of comfortably, if going for the PDK then it holds onto gears far longer than the 981 S therefore you'll need to use the paddles in all but traffic jams. The suspension is really quite firm, steering is lovely but quite heavy and the nose grounds on a lot of bumps and road obstacles far more than you would imagine.
Personally I wouldn't have have a CR for an every day car if any city driving is involved… Yes for depreciation but not for the sake of my fillings.
It all depends on whether you don't mind the extra punishment you'll get from a CR on a daily basis, its no GT3 back breaker but not too far off…
IF you live in the country however and have nice roads to drive on everyday, then yes, definitely take the R

Heavy steering??!
The ground clearance at the front is surprisingly low though, lower than my friends Elise Club racer in fact. Grounds on just about all speed bumps.

Absolutely right, it is just the front overhang.
-90mm is low, I think the term used in my old neck of the woods was 'in the weeds'
Ok fair enough, the steering isn't heavy!
I think everything else I said though is pretty spot on. It does ground a lot. The 2 little flaps that hang down on either side take most of the beating giving the impression the the PU is being scraped.
