In my case, I installed a couple of 6.5s on my passenger footwell.

As a hobby, I've installed many systems over the years, but the 996 was by far the favorite.

Did not think to seal the door enclosures, I used Focal 5WS.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Great write up on your DIY. Did a similar install myself, but kept the OEM head unit and no speakers behind the seats. But my car is a C4, so there is alot less room in the trunk. The area where you put the crossovers and amps is taken up. Unfortunately mine are still floating in the trunk. Will figure out the mounting one of these days. Did not think to seal the door enclosures, I used Focal 5WS. Guess I will go back in one of these days and do that. Thanks for your efforts.
Great pics and tutorial. The 1st pic shows the center console out- how hard is it getting to that point? How do you like the Kenwood HU? I've been looking at the 792. comments from owners have me wondering about the bright blue light at night, reading the display during the day and using the righthand control **** to select songs. Your comments?
Would like to hear the system sometime. I'm in OP.

Nice job, very clean, bet it sounds great. Any shots of the subwoofers finished up behind the seats? Thanks for tyaking the time to put it together and sharing. Much appreciated!!!

Good question... sorry, I don't remember!
There are 4 screws though. I may have removed the plastic surrounding the individual buttons?

I like it a lot for the price.

has it for $165 w/ free shipping. I use the remote control a lot more than I thought I would.

The 693 allows you to choose from a list of pre-defined colors, including one that is VERY close to redish dash lights in our 996s. There's also a "custom" configuration where you can set the colors. I find the green setting works well in sunlight with the convertible top down. I agree, the righthand control **** is a drawback for controlling the configuration menus, selecting songs, etc. It takes some getting used to.

Cool! I'm in OP too. Let's hook up. Supposed to be in the 60s on Saturday. Send me a private message.
Thanks for the write up. I'm installing a Kenwood double DIN unit, with the Hertz 3-way system, and Focal subs next week. I'm also using the Audison LX-6 amp. Hopefully mine turns out as clean as yours.

I lucked out and found a set of these on Ebay for around $650. They're designed by Rod Birch of Car Audio Innovations. Fit like a glove. 8" shallow-depth Earthquake subs. No interference with the front seats. Subs hit pretty low.

Ha! I think we may have to find out this weekend. The weather is supposed to be in the 60s here in KC. My dad won't be driving your old car though... probably my brother-in-law instead. Surely low bass is worth a few extra horsepower!

Which Kenwood are you installing? I installed a DDX714. Check out my current thread.

Nice write-up! Since I'm still planning to upgrade my speakers, your write-up is very helpful. The Earthquake SWS actually works pretty well. In my case, I installed a couple of 6.5s on my passenger footwell. Unfortunately, they are no longer in production and I lucked out on the last pair in my local audio shop.
I have the following:
1) Kenwood DNX7100 Nav/Head Unit w/iPod
2) Three JL Audio 8" Subwoofers
3) JL Audio 500.5 Amp
4) JL Audio Evolution 4" in the dash
4) JL Audio Evolution 6.5" in the doors.
I realize this is a pretty old thread, but a bump for a really nicely done how-to thread...
I was searching for some ideas on amp mounting and wiring for my setup [ipad mini / pioneer head unit / polk speakers, documented
here
]
The only thing I'm not completely comfortable with is drilling the sheetmetal for the amp board. I'd much prefer to use factory bolt locations, but it doesn't seem like they are in good spots. If I do drill, I was thinking of installing rivnuts just in the sheet metal instead of through bolts. Would eliminate that grinding/sealing you had to do on your mounting bolts.
Thanks for the ideas and good documentation!

Good call! I wish I would have known of such fasteners several years ago. I may just swap those out one day. Putting link here for future reference...

BTW, congrats on your iPad mini install! Impressive!

Thanks! It was fun putting the iPad in, but an additional amp is next on the list...
On the rivnuts (aka nutserts, threaded inserts, rivet nuts), I'd suggest aluminum ones for light duty applications like mounting an amp. The steel rivnuts need a much beefier (and much more expensive) tool to install properly.
