I know many owners have broken their shift cables on their 987.2. I was actually thinking of carrying a spare on long road trips....
I just noticed that Porsche is discontinuing their original shift cable in favor of a newer (twice as expensive) upgrade kit. Porsche is calling it an "Shift Cable Update Kit" for $799.
Porsche has discontinued production of 6-speed shift cables for 6-Speed Boxster/Cayman models, and replaced them with an updated design. To fit the newer design, upgrading two additional pieces is necessary.
Suncoast Porsche now has the new cable:

Unless the small increase in noise is a bother or it's a warranty matter, I don't see why anyone would choose this over the numeric cables at $475?
Agreed, go with the Numerics.
Will the Numeric Racing Shift cables last longer than the OEM cables.... If so I will look at upgrading next year.
It is just odd how many people are snapping their OEM shifter cables.

The OEM cables are a bit thin and have a sharp bend on the left side of the engine. This creates a stress that eventually causes them to fail. The Numerics are MUCH beefier. I have yet to hear of anyone that have had their Numeric cables fail.
As an added bonus the Numerics have solid metal connections throughout (as opposed to plastic/rubber), which gives a much more positive shifting feel.
Cable replacement of the older design cables should be goodwilled regardless of mileage and/or if they've been replaced before. We should start a petition.

Just a curious question....as an owner of a 987.1 base, is this cable problem a 987 across the board problem or only an S problem? Does anyone know?
Thanks.
Has anyone tried the $800 option at Suncoast? How much time does a mechanic need to get them installed?
You've posted this issue in so many threads. Why the shotgun approach? Your answers will be scattered all over the place. It's better to use one existing thread and keep it on topic (this one is about the new OEM cables - not Numeric). It will also make it easier for others to find this same info in the future.
Good God, I'm sounding like a moderator!
(shudder).
Updated. I do think the posts should be consolidated, there were more I didn't reply to ... and my reply changed as I realized it was the same cable issue everyone else described.
