Since you have already damaged your handle get a set a pliers to get a good grip and twist it back and forth until it loosens.

Suggestion

I'll admit due to the placement it is hard to get a really strong pull on the thing, but I'd tried several times until I was tired out with no success until I thought to use the drift.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

I'd tried that several times, then used pliers and some shop rag padding (which didn't work very well as the leather was marked by the jaws of the pliers anyway) but it was really stuck.

POST 1Original post

I got a new leather handbrake handle cover to replace the one I damaged in taking the console out to install the SSK, and I CAN NOT get the old one off. It is supposed to slide off with maybe a little coaxing as I understand it is glued on. I've twisted with channel lock pliers until the leather is in shambles, finally cut the leather cover off and there is a hard plastic sheath underneath that I can not remove. Can anyone give me any tips on how to get this thing off? I guess I could use my Dremel and cut it off but I hesitate to do that. Bill

POST 2Original post

Sorry I can't help but have always wondered if there's a way to get that off. Haven't gone to the means you have, but by quick inspection it looked impossible. Through looking for a replacement leather handle it appeared as though you could only replace the whole assembly including the lever. May I ask where you found just the leather handle replacement?

POST 3Original post

I got it from a fellow Planet 9 member who bought a CF handle I think. He told me to just pull it off and that his came off with some tugging. That hasn't been my experience at all. The replacement looks just like my original, the plastic shaft with leather covering it, and should slide on if I can ever get the OEM off.

POST 4Original post

You almost got it right. Follow these instructions.

POST 5Original post

I had those instructions from the start, the only problem is it won't come off by simply pulling. I'd tried that several times, then used pliers and some shop rag padding (which didn't work very well as the leather was marked by the jaws of the pliers anyway) but it was really stuck. I just got it off, by using a steel drift and a ball peen hammer. It only took one blow from the hammer to move it about 3" and that freed it, but the glue they used was too much for pulling. I'll admit due to the placement it is hard to get a really strong pull on the thing, but I'd tried several times until I was tired out with no success until I thought to use the drift. It made a small mark on the cover where it touched, but much less than all the marks the pliers made.

POST 6Original post

Im trying the same thing now. Is it really just pulling?

POST 7Original post

You have to break the glue bond by rotating the handle. Once it is loose it will pull off.

POST 8Original post

Do you remember where the glue bond was? i can try to warm it up.

POST 9Original post

Since you have already damaged your handle get a set a pliers to get a good grip and twist it back and forth until it loosens.
