Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Personally I think it worked well but the black roof and wheels broke up the colour…not so sure about a Cayman to be honest.
After seeing the recent Taycan feature with a car in rubystone it got me thinking.
I am about to order a 4.0 GtS Cayman and wondered if it would be a residual disaster ordering this colour.
I saw it on a 964 RS years ago and loved the colour.
Any advice on this and paint to sample in general (the order process especially) gratefully received!
No. It’s a lovely colour. Yes it may be a harder sell, but the right buyer would likely pay overs.
I wouldn’t worry about the next buyer just go for what you want. I’d buy a ruby car in a heartbeat and I’m not the only one.
I’ve seen pics of a GT3 Touring in Rubystone recently and thought it was stunning. Ideally try and find pics of a Cayman in it to see how it looks etc. Could be fantastic!

100% this
In the late 90's I had a 964 Turbo in Rubystone which everyone referred as PINK... !
Works on the 964RS, and obviously people in the know ‘get it’
But on a contemporary car most people would think of it as ‘Barbie Pink’ IMO.
However, colour is a very personal choice, so only you can decide
It is certainly a brave choice and you'd have to
really
want it. While I like it, I don't think I'd want to live with it every day, especially on an a Cayman. A 964 is a small car and nowadays tends to be a car for occasional use which lends itself more to the extrovert colours. Someone living in my area had a Ruby' 964 and seeing it always made me smile.
Editied for calling a Cayman a Taycan
Edited by minimalist on Monday 30th August 11:04
Go for it if you like it. I like it on the 964RS but not enough to own one. The misses was not at all impressed with the colour when we saw one recently.

You mean like a Challenger
they call it Furious Fuchsia,
looks similar to Rubystone .
Outstanding colour - not sure I could live with it though
It’s a great colour, but only on the right cars, and it’s easy to fall in love with other people’s photos…
I’m not sure I would be so brave, but this photo is stunning!
I wouldn’t do it.
I think a new GT3 can just about pull it off but not a Cayman, especially a non-GT4 Cayman.
It is a great colour but even on the 964 it divided opinion.
To most people it’s just a strange pink Porsche.
I do love the old colours though and Viola looks great on the more modern stuff. That would be my choice personally.
Going for a vivid colour will divide opinion.
By contrast, personally, I prefer the more subtle colours, but Silvers and dark metallic Greys are far too common and mainstream.
Starting to find love for the flat Greys, although with more depth than Crayon/Chalk.
Fashion or Nardo Grey have a distinctive retro-look and seem to suit most Porsche models, IMV.
I agree with the above....it looks good on historic air cooled 911's but a bit much, in my opinion, on a 718. Yes on a purposely tricked out track weapon but a day-to-day non rare 718, not convinced.....but if you love it, thats all that matters so go for it if you want....but if you were sure then you'd probably not have started this thread.
My wife’s 718 Boxster was Ruby Star (it’s not called Rubystone any more). Personally I think it worked well but the black roof and wheels broke up the colour…not so sure about a Cayman to be honest. If anything I’d say we got a bit more for it because it was PTS and the OPC got strong money for it (sold at the beginning of the summer).
I’d also say that the GT3 photo and the Cayman photo’s above are not a good representation of the colour….it is darker in the metal like in these photo’s
I think the PTS colours are all special. If you like Rubystone and plan on keeping the car a while then go for it. The whole point of PTS is that the car is special enough to you to make it your own.
Thanks for the replies, it is certainly good for thought. I agree it needs to be on a smaller car.
The pictures posted are fabulous thank you, just not sure if I am brave enough, and I always intend to keep my cars but rarely do, so that point may be the decider.
Loved seeing the colour on actual cars, I still love it!

I can remember coming to look at it at your showroom with my dad. I always thought it was a great colour, however it wasn't just pink, it was known as nipple pink in our household!

If you are exceedingly rich and can afford to depreciate the car to zero as soon as you leave the OPC, then have at it!
Otherwise just don’t - it will be a very stupid thing to do.

It was called Star Ruby originally.
It is a difficult colour to photograph, but it looks pretty much how it actually looks, here...

Is it possible to order a 718 with either custom colours (£6500 option) or PTS (another £6500 by my very limited understanding, to cover the factory approval process and general mucking about in production) right now? You can’t just tell Porsche you want a colour on a car,, it has to be considered and approved. And I see no sign of the appropriate paintbrush symbol that indicates custom colours are available.
My understanding is that specialist paint shop capacity is limited (plus the ‘monkey see monkey want’ effect of something being rare allows for a major margin on something as simple as paint) and that CC/PTS are therefore only available for a period by model, which rotates around the model base. Happy to be corrected…

Isn't that what this is? I haven't spec'd my Porsche before so I could very well have misunderstood?
If you thinking PTS do it. Unhelpful salesman talked my me out of gulf blue on my 997 turbo saying I'd struggle to sell again. School boy error didn't make same mistake on 991 turbo s. Only £3.8k too for PTS in 2018

I can see how you could get to £10K for a decent paint shop respray, maybe even £20K, £30K at a push, but £50K? are the PTS paints themselves to craft by a 3rd party the extra expense on top? I struggle to understand how a respray could reach £50K.

Back to bare shell less than £50k plus VAT? That was RPM's quote for a full colour change. Engine, gearbox , car stripped to shell and painted just like factory. Very interested to hear where without giving you back car that rattles like a Lotus. Mines 100k miles and as tight as our 991 with 20k miles.

I totally agree, if you can get it, do it if you can afford it. A well chosen PTS or custom colour could be a massive shot in the arm come resale time, and make the car look a million dollars while you have it. My Olympic Blue 981 Boxster is so eye catching that I’m probably about to ditch my slot for a 718 GTS Boxster on the grounds that my car is just such a stunning thing. And there are some cracking colours…just get an eyeful of PTSRS on Instagram or facebook and there’s bound to be a colour there whatever your tastes — if you can get Porsche to put it on the car.

I did notice one PTS paint though on the 70th Anniversary 986 Boxster S, painted in Liquid Metal, previously only available on the 918, at a £40k option!
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202105162...
so I can see how it can add up in extreme cases, but yep, £50K for a repaint in Gulf Blue, surely not.

You're paying Porsche indy workshop rates to strip and rebuild the car. A decent Porsche [i]biased[i] paintshop such as Riviera would most likely half the hour rate that RPMT charge. Nothing against RPMT at all, but they're hardly cheap... Witness the Snakebite build.
I'd suggest that Matt at Fearnsport would do it for half (maybe 2/3) what RPMT are wanting, and he'd probably paint the car himself (in someone else's paintbooth) He's an ex-painter BTW ...

RPM don’t have a body shop themselves do they ? I can see you’d want someone who knows what they’re doing though to take the car apart.
IIRC OPC Reading did a colour change on a 911R when the car was brand new….car was fully stripped and I don’t think it was £50k.

^^^ Same restoration team at Reading are doing mine. Autobody Technic in Slough f it up so bad Raeding saying it may be more once they get under the old ABT repair. No biggy maybe ABT were trying their best. Just not up to it in my opinion f ruining my car. Worst introduction I've ever had in my life. I do like Riviera. Did a wonderful job on Les Mills 9m RS hot rod but it may perhaps go legal if i can be bothered with ABT so want a proper report on their cowboy repair. £11.5k I paid ABT. F awful. I may just post up the repair bill on their google page. Can not be bothered dealing with mediocrity or fighting over buttons - life to be enjoyed
This was Riviera. I'd give it a 9.5 out of 10 which is a good job. No job perfect.
I keep wanting to last minute paint my 997 Gulf Blue. Our 991 cab is Gulf Blue which I love. I've always loved this colour though. And mint green too especially on older cars like 964..TS has a del miles 964 RS in mint green. Want!
Purple Man said:

It is so subjective and very model dependent, As IMI A says Mint Green on certain cars looks fabulous…like the mint green 997.2 GT3 in that is in the UK But it looks terrible IMHO on the 991.1 GTS which never seems to last more than a few months with any owner and is a regular in the classifieds….
Gulf or Meissen Blue, Signal Yellow and maybe something like Viper or Irish Green. Would be my choices I reckon as they work across all generations of car.
I’ve got a PTS ‘65 SWB which is currently being restored.

Do Porsche GB not just use Premier Panel Skills in Farnham for all their bodywork?
I do not know Ed but its the same guys that did this one. Met them at OPC Reading. I think the call themselves Porsche Central Operations or Restorations?

To the OP - GO FOR IT!!! I'm constantly amazed, given that you can get Guards Red and Racing Yellow for free, how many black, grey, silver and white Porsches you see. Let's have some bloody colour on the roads!

Holy thread revival Batman.
Signal yellow 718 GT4 currently on a boat to the UK right now. Hoping it will be one of one in the UK.
Having previously had a birch green 981 GT4 I had to go PTS for the next one. Can’t wait.
On the subject of ruby star. I love it. It’s ballsy and there will be a buyer for that car easily.
So in the end I plucked up the courage and ordered a PTS GT4 in Rubystar that wil, arrive back end of the year.
I am sure it will be divisive, “why has he got a pink car” etc.
But from when I first saw a 964 RS I knew I wanted that colour.

What better justification can there be?
Not enough exciting colours on cars, let alone interesting performance cars. Resale black/white/silver...

I was very tempted with viola on my Taycan CT - but in the end decided to go with Oak Green metallic and glad I did, it suits a larger car so well. I found Viola a bit dark on overcast days, it really needs the sun out to pop.
The other one I was keen on was viola purple metallic, but it works better on a cayman or 911.

Rubystone is marmite. No more I can add to that! Regarding PTS in general. My own thoughts being that Porsche are simply ripping the backside out of what they sell/charge for some colours that aren’t much better than the standard and in many cases worse. For example and In my opinion Shark Blue is better than any other bright blue in the PTS catalogue so why pay an extra £4K etc.
Would I PTS? Certainly not on something like a GTS - maybe on a GT car that I’d keep forever but I’d think long and hard before blowing the cash.
