Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Assuming it was the driver who posted the video on Facebook, he is proud of it and thinks of himself as a dare-devil.
Leading evidence: 'driver who posted the video' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'driver who posted the video' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run with track tires' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Lots of exchanges as to how this happened so suddenly. Wide tyres, poor tread, oil on roads, high speed, PCM turned off, etc but I'd like to know how to avoid this during the tropical monsoon season in this part of the world. Sudden heavy downpours are normal.
So how does one avoid a major disaster in such situations? Video below
Drive according to the weather conditions? A mid engine car does have the advantage of balance (low polar moment of inertia) but as it's been written in many magazines when it breaks away to a spin it happens quickly.
As others said, slow down... particularly if the weather gets bad.
But beyond that, you already listed a bunch of reasons as well - poor thread (tread, I think you mean) on your tires, etc. Oil on roads is common, and usually is much worse at the first hit of rainfall... so you need to be extra careful when the rain starts in that situation. PCM turned off... well, that's an obvious one... if you're not paying MAX attention, then PCM can be helpful... but the key is you shouldn't be depending on PCM to fix the issue for you... the other issues should be resolved first (slow down for conditions, maintain the vehicle properly, etc).
Yes, slow down. You can clearly see he is going much faster than everyone else and you don't see any slowdown when rain starts. If there is a big enough puddle you can hydroplane even with new tires. You go fast, you increase inertia, he clearly got a clue when the first raindrops fell and should've slowed down. Everyone else around him is fine also. I see that here in Southern California, people drive the same when dry as wet all the time and every rain, we have dozens of accidents. Just slow down, especially when you have God, gods or mother nature, whatever you believe in, is giving you a sign. I have had some close calls on bone dry days, hot day, middle of day going around a cloverleaf and with no warning, giant puddle in the middle of the apex from a freeway sprinkler. If I had been going faster, WHAMO! you can look for all sorts of excuses but the elephant in the room isn't the engine or tires, he just does not adapt to a change in conditions.
You should see it in this part of the world when we get the first snow. It's like there is collective amnesia every year. Accidents everywhere and then people seem to remember how to drive appropriately. Except for the SUV's on all-seasons.
Not just "oh Canada" . When I lived in Michigan it would be snowing balls and people would tailgate at seventy five mph anyhow, it was quite unnerving. In central NY the body shops love snowstorms, they call it money raining from heaven because of exactly what you posted.
I saw a documentary years back about highway deaths and one of the premises was that cars are so safe now that people drive unsafely because they feel safe. I recall him saying someting like you tell people there is an airbag in the steering wheel and people drive less safely. You tell them you have a bomb in your steering wheel that will detonate if you hit anything, people drive more safely. Simple. I have experienced this myself and can personally vouch that this is true. When I heard that my BMW had Takata Airbags that could send shrapnel into me and my family in the car if they go off, I became an old grandpa driver, especially with my kids in the car.
Assuming it was the driver who posted the video on Facebook, he is proud of it and thinks of himself as a dare-devil. But even before the rain, he was driving like an a-hole instead of a skilled driver of high performance cars. This is the mentality that "Fast & Furious" inspires.
BTW, I've driven in much harder downpours than that and never had a problem on good street tires. I wonder if he was running with track tires?
Why would anyone need someone else to tell them what went wrong here? If the fact that all the other cars on the road appear to be going in reverse isn't a big enough clue, then nothing anyone else has to say will help as the driver doesnt seem to understand basic physics
Haha yeah I've seen those:
Average annual snowfall where I was born is 103"
Tug hill plateau ( I had a hospital account there ) annual is more than 200". It's the six snowiest place in the states.
Up state NY?? I bet lake effect snows suuuuuck!!!
I live most of the time in MN (kids in high school 🙏) so I get this kinda of landscape every year… we average 40-50” annual…last year was a minimal amount and so far so good
0h it sucks but only my rental remains in NY, it was sunny and 70 at my house today. In the summer though? In better times? The St Lawrence Seaway is unique and amazing. I like Ottawa too and especially Kingston where I spent a lot of time. If the snow and lack of sun don't get ya the property taxes and salt rust on your DD will.
Yes, we have that salt thing here too.. thankfully I’m basically retired and don’t get things to commute dirty anymore… I have a C class I bought new 🤦♂️and promised myself no more expensive DD cars…I do have a Tiguan and that was nice for the cash… I’m holding tight to these until I take an EV plunge
My 11 year old truck looks new, never had a car that long. When I tell people I had to send the Mountaineer to the crusher with only 80K on it solely due to salt damage they can't believe it. Everything else you typed I'm in the same situation and agree with as well. I'm going to run the Escape as long as it makes sense and like you, one expensive car is good, the DD just needs to be comfortable and reliable.
Ya, I’m just over it.. Tesla and China are going to mop the floor with the auto industry so hopefully he have more to choose from… vw might be in the mix.. I think US and Japan are in trouble.
anyway good luck to the driver of this wreck… I wouldn’t post a video of it tho.. insurance might look at things a bit different seeing your speed
I couldn't help but laugh when I watched the video. And I'm sure the traffic that he had just blasted by laughed when they drove by his wrecked car.
It doesn't matter what kind of car you drive, physics never take a day off.
As we can hear Ariana Grande throughout the whole video I think we can assume PCM (Porsche Communication Management) was on the whole time. PSM (Porsche Stability Management) on the other hand is just silly to turn off on highway driving. It's not like you're going to do powerslides anyway.
So tips for this to not happen again?
SLOW DOWN! You were going a fair bit quicker than anyone else on the road.
Don't save on tires. Buy high performance tires, your car needs them. It's like ordering a 100 dollar steak and then covering it with ketchup. And if they're worn, replace them.
Leave PSM ON during normal driving. You don't need to do powerslides or burnouts on the highway, you can leave the electronic safeguards on.
Again, SLOW DOWN.
If it hasn't rained for a while the first downpour can make the roads extremely slippery. And there is only one antidote. SLOWING DOWN.
Way too fast. You can see once the car hit the rain, it just rotates and end of story. Also, he was driving on the wrong side of the road, that will do it
