They ended up replacing the control arm instead. That did the trick.
Leading evidence: 'Replace control arm instead' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'strut bearings' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace control arm instead' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Replace control arm instead', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Reported cause
Mine had the creaking sound, and it was the strut bearings that the springs seat against on the top of the front struts.

, power steering line and pulley replaced after I had a leak from one of the power steering lines.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone experiencing Creaking noise coming from the rack & pinion steering when you turn the wheel at slow speeds or a dead stop ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes. Mine does it when the outside temps are warm. Only on the drivers side. It is probably the strut bushing at the top . I need to get someone to steer it while look and listen. When I do I'll report. It does not sound like power steering does. Simply a creak as the strut rotates at low speed. Sounds like you are describing the same sound.
passenger side.. I got out to listen while the my hot girl friend turned the steering wheel .. I couldn't determine if it was a tie-rod bushing or the rack & pinion itself. I will check the power steering fluid tonight and see it that's the issue. Any know if the tie-rods are sealed or serviceable with grease ?
" strut bearing ". Very possible. I'm under warranty and will have them check it at
next
service. Odd part is mine is temperature dependant and started when weather warmed.
I popped open the cover and notes the fluid was crazy low cold. Buy as we know the engine needs to be warm to check the fluid. But seems to be you guys helped me eliminate the problem.
I have extensive knowledge in cars, this is my 2nd
Porsche
but it was a 944. Just want to make sure I take care of my Caymen the right way. Thank you guys

Fixed mine this afternoon too but mine WAS just a creaky strut bushing shifting as the strut turned. I jacked it up and sprayed some silicone lube in the gap and it was instantly quiet. SO-- I did the other side for good measure and it may be my imagination but it seems like the steering is a bit freer. Regardless. All good.
Sorry for the highjack.
I don't think this is the same noise, but I get a rubbing noise...sounds like a brake pad is stuck against the disc...when I turn the wheel to the left and first start rolling. It is loud and seems to be coming from the front left. It is definitely a wheel-rolling thing. It only does this after it has been sitting for awhile. Once rolling, it is completely normal. Anyone have any ideas? I took it to the dealer and they checked the brakes and found nothing. My warranty is up in a few days.
Thanks
I had this problem recently. I took it in saying I thought it was the strut bearing based on other posts i had read here. Dealer first replaced the tie rod. They then said that wasn't it. They ended up replacing the control arm instead. That did the trick.
If it goes away soon after you drive a few feet, it probably IS a brake disc rubbing the pads with a bit of corrosion from the shut down. However if it is more prevalent when turning and or changes as you turn the steering wheel, you should check your wheel bearings for excess play. Jack front wheels up and shake the wheel in an out at the bottom. They both should be alike with almost no movement.
its not a sound coming from the brakes (I'm familiar with that sound Mercedes is known for that ) , this is a rack & pinion steering noise issue... only on hot days and only at slow speeds and on one side... if it was a wheel bearing, there would be consistent noise at every bump and hard pulling during braking in addition to tire wear ...
Couple of us have had this problem, various possibilites as to the culprit. The most commonly thought culprit is the strut bearing. Here is a past thread that touched upon this issue, has some great videos too. Mine is the worst after the car has been in the rain but is drying out. Oh one last thing, LOVE the radiator guards that keep the fog lights and integrate
LED
's too where did you get them?

Not a wheel bearing, but the strut bearing on the top of the strut tower. Your symptoms are consistent with with a failing strut bearing which creaks when you turn it, and creaks louder when weight transfers during cornering. One way to check this is to crank the wheel in your garage, then jack up one side of the car (unloading one bearing and loading the other) and crank the wheel again.

, power steering line and pulley replaced after I had a leak from one of the power steering lines. I noticed there's now a very small creaking sound when I'm turning the wheel exactly around 11'o clock position at any speed. Going to call the shop that did the work but any ideas what it could be?
Mine had the creaking sound, and it was the strut bearings that the springs seat against on the top of the front struts. When you turn the wheel, the struts actually rotate, which is accommodated by these bearings. I replaced my struts and these bearings and the creaky sound went away. Part number is 996-343-515-05 (same for left/right sides).
